You just can't paint with a wide brush like that. Use your brain. Investigate the game and understand that it's still in development. If it looks like something you'd be into with what features are currently in the game, go for it. Do not buy a game on a promise of what it might become.

My only complaint is that I don't really know that most days I dont know what to do. Once I stabilize my base with a freezer, some crops, 4 or 5 dudes, it's pretty much on autoplay until the next research pops up.
I'm sure there's either a facet of the game that I'm not seeing, or research is due some rebalancing.

Dorf Fort fag here. It's a nice change of pace between fortresses and unlike nu-Dorf, Rimworld is actually hard when you crank up the difficulty.
Tantrum Spirals don't happen in DF anymore (not since 0.40 and 0.42) so you can literally treat your Dwarves like utter shit and at worst they get a minor work speed penalty. Also since 0.40 world activation invasions are fewer and smaller, and kobold thieves/goblin pedophiles don't happen anymore.
DF is a better game by far but it sucks having to play an old version of it for a bit of a challenge and you get sick of Terrifying Glaciers after a while.

DF's mod community is dead because one guy keeps stealing mods and putting them into his own modpack, and the few mods that he hasn't stolen either haven't been updated or are shit like

Dwarf Fortress isn't hard to learn. It's hard to play. It's literally so obtuse that its painful to keep on with it.

A UI is not just 'learn duh hotkeys git gud'. Thats the controls of dwarf fortress. And yeah, those are total dogshit too with the constantly inconsistent controls and apparent inabiltiy of the dev to make a comprehend any of the design decisions of videogames from the last fucking quarter century. But a UI does more than that.
A UI is meant to communicate information with you in a quick and effective way, while reducing the amount of time you need to think about interacting with any menu down to the minimum. The ideal UI is one you don't even think about. Like the cleaners of the public bathroom or politicians, the UI is something you shoulnd't even want to notice unless it starts to seriously fuck up.
The dwarf fortress UI fails on almost every level of what a UI is meant to do. And that creates suffering that - while the game is very enjoyable - makes me consider carefully whether i want to bother with it over other, better made games.
A lot of the time information about what's going on in your fortress - stuff that should be easily presentable to the player since yknow, it's happening right there - isnt just hard to find, it's actually impossible to find out without resorting to outside programs.
It's a sandbox with nothing interesting to do so there's a forced and unfun tower defense mechanic instead. There's never a sense of accomplishment, it's just building traps until the game sends a wave too big to fight against.
The game would be better if they stopped trying to ape DF and just made their own game because literally everything in the game copied from DF is just a shitty unsatifying version and they'd be way better off if they went in literally any other direction than attempting pure sandbox. DF succeeds because it's an insanely huge simulation with room for interesting things to happen. Rimworld is just an RNG with forced "storytelling" in that the game just throws either a wave of pirates or a caravan at you once and a while but has zero room for any actual stories to arise from the randomness.
I'd love this game if it just actually focused on being a tower defense and fixed it's shit tier combat. Or focused on being a farming/building sim and fixed it's shit tier building system. But as it is now it's just "DF but with a good UI and none of the good things about DF"
