They're made for different purposes. They're basically there so Eggman has someone to talk to, since he's lonely and all, and is his assistants and stuff. Metal Sonic is basically a killing machine.

This Metal Sonic is different compared to Sonic CD's Metal Sonic & Sonic OAV (movie).
the 1st model died in Lava (movie) and his name is "Shard".

Eggman built another one and he is the Metal Sonic as we know it. This model is always upgraded and improved.
He became so powerful that he tried to rule the world (Sonic Heroes).
Metal Sonic 2.0 is like Doomsday, everytime he loses a battle, he becomes stronger.

Mecha sonic is so much cooler than all the others.

Mecha Sonic looks cool but the turbine torso from Metal is the most genius design choise ever and everything else is just noise or doesn't get the point.

well he is the furtherest iteration of all of those shown.

each one seems to be focused on an aspect Robotnik thought made Sonic strong.

first it was his spines with silver sonic, then his speed with metal sonic, and the finally his ability to go super with Mecha sonic.

He ripped an emerald out of his own chest to get Shadow back to his dimension. He has some of Sonic's kindness in him somewhere I guess.

You guys always forget that Shadow was genetically engineered using the DNA of a evil alien, in order to be the ultimate weapon. He too is manufactured.
And in some timelines, Shadow is a robot himself.

There's really no excuse for Metal Sonic, except he's the edgiest of them all.

In Sonic Rivals 2 after you beat the Shadow/Metal Sonic story, Metal Sonic and Shadow are stuck in the dimension where the Ifrit was so Metal Sonic rips a chaos emerald out of himself and gives it to Shadow so he can use chaos control to get back home.

Why put the GUN guy in there? He was even teamed up with sonic in one of the boss fights.
