Devs are too lazy to compress.

the art of compression is lost and bloat has replaced it, games that should normally take up 10-30 gigs now take up 70+. FF15 takes up over 100 fucking gigs, WHY DOES THIS GAME TAKE UP 100+ FUCKING GIGS

It doesn't, m8

yeah sorry 170gigs
gotta enjoy those 8k textures to the fullest

Forza 7 recommends 100 gigs of free space

I don't get it, I remember when 500mb meant that the game itself was actually huge and had lots of content, now it seems that a game can be 60+gig and only last for a few hours.

I don't know, Shady Steps, why don't you get a better download speed?

size grows exponentially with resolution

>now it seems that a game can be 60+gig and only last for a few hours.
Oh I know exactly the game

it takes up 170 gigs dude
so what you're saying is that the 4k meme is causing all this bloat?

To make them harder to pirate I guess.
They must have ran studies proving that people aren't willing to pirate shit over 10 GB.

fucking this.

It always amaze me how peoples lose their shit when game have over 30GB weight.

>60 gigabytes being literally anything

Forza Horizon 3 uses 60 gigs so that makes sense I guess.

I don't know where you're getting that number from OP but mines almost half that.

Does the new DLC bring it up to 60GB? I heard they had almost a new games worth of content.

SSD fags on suicide watch

>What are lossless repacks

jus like my dik lmao

>1.2MB/s
>in 2017
Well it might be your own fault

I live in a village with shit internet.

The expansion is pretty huge, yeah.

>DUDE HAVING MASSIVE SIZES IS OK BECAUSE WE CAN DOWNLOAD IT FAST
>IGNORE THE FACT THAT GAMES EXPLODED FROM 25 ON AVERAGE TO 100+
>DUDE IT'S OK THAT THESE GAMES TAKE UP SO MUCH SPACE DESPITE LOOKING THE EXACT SAME AS THEIR PREDECESSORS AND OFTEN HAVING LESS CONTENT
You faggots will defend fucking anything. Devs are lazy cunts, end of story.

whats wrong with SSDs? I've got a 250GB one and I can fit 8-9 games on it easily and whenever I run out of space I just delete the ones I'm finished with

>Has shitty internet
>Complains after buying >60GB games
Well then don't?

>tfw Ryzen 1700 with SSD
>It's still faster to download any game than unpack the shitty cracked releases
kek

I don't buy it. I have 100mb/s for an equivalent of 8$ and I'm living in the middle of nowhere in Siberia. All that data caps and shit is mostly american problem.

Though I definitely considering buying a bigger SSD, so there is that I guess.

>my mfw face when I download a repack that's half the size and takes marginally longer to install

Pirates win yet again.

steam could easily solve this by making a selective download.
>choose which languages to download
>choose which texture packs or atleast make the ultra pack optional
>if the game has a single player campaign but it's mainly an online multiplayer game (cod, etc') you can choose to only download one or the other.

>proving that people aren't willing to pirate shit over 10 GB
Who the fuck believes that?

Is there special magic that goes into making repacks or do they just gzip it?

>choose which language to download
holy shit this, so many fucking games have like 30 gigs worth of languages because subhuman savages like the chinks can't speak or read English, let us choose for fuck sake.
>if the game has a single player campaign but it's mainly an online multiplayer game (cod, etc') you can choose to only download one or the other.
I still can't believe DOOM didn't allow this

it's not okay but devs think it is because you buy those games. demand smaller files sizes and it'll happen

>30GB weight

>Under 60gb
OP thats one of the smaller ones now

Final Fantasy XV is 150GB. It's amazing how far technology has gone. Super Mario Bros. was only 500MB back in the day.
Incredible.

Ah right that makes sense.

Would you still recommend it? I saw a video of the expansion so I decided to to reinstall the game and do a 2nd playthrough on the vanilla game and I'm undecided whether I want to drop that much money on the expansion.

It costs $46 on steam over here and although there's lots of content I'm not sure whether that justifies the price.

Doesn't Steam already do the language switching thing?

i personally dont pirate very big games, but i wouldnt buy them either for the same reason. Couple years ago 12gb was huge

Meanwhile PUBG has 7gigs and gives you countless hours of fun.

>technology is defined by how much space a game can waste
>SMB was 500MB
Fuck it, this post is so dumb I had to reply.

lol no, if that game has some gook shit you have to download it too, at least as far as I know.

Damn... Really made me think... PUBG... Perfect video game!

Yeah well back then it meant also that textures were 32x32 or 64x64 or some shit like that, nowadays you have up to 4k textures and they're provided multiple times in different sizes, then high poly models, hires skyboxes and all that jazz, a game with a fuck ton of visual content and variety can easily take a lot of disk space.
The size of the assets does in no way translate to the gameplay length.

I remember when people lost their shit over Max Payne 3 being like 20 gigs
and this was just in 2011

You wanna talk about bloat? The Vanquish PC port is 18.6 GB in size, only 2.5GB represent actual game files and 16.1 are video cutscenes they couldn't compress because of the ancient codec they use.

Fuck off that can't be true. You really get 100mb/s for $8 is bumfuck nowhere?

In the UK you usually pay for internet+phone+TV package and I pay £35 and only get 6MB/s peak.

Because a 1TB hard drive is dirt cheap now.
Compression was a valued skill in video games when hard drives actually cost something.

>being this new

>game has all of that
>it either still looks like shit or runs like shit making the GUD GRAPHICS pointless
All I'm seeing is that graphicsfags have ruined vidya even more.
MGR:R has the same issue.

Aren't we living in magical times, bro? Technology is amazing. Remember those cumbersome network cables we had to use before wifi was invented?
We were born in the right generation.

Poe's law nigger, you would be amazed at some of the awful opinions some people have. I had a feeling you were fucking with me, but goddamn I've seen unironic posts like that.

I have no problem with storage space but a lot of games are huge and have huge updates so you have to shell out for stupid internet packages just to play them.

If you already like xcom 2 and you want more intermediate goals and a couple of neat classes to play with then it's worth picking up if you won't really miss the money. I don't think I'd say it's a new game's worth of content but it's a nice complement what's already there.

This, you can buy 4TB hard drives for ~£120 now.

>just in 2011
6 years is lots of progress in the world of electronics

>300mb upload and download speed
>2TB HDD
>512 GB SSD
I'm good

>deleting games

32 GB UPDATE LMAO

>get a 1tb hard drive
>use it for years, have dozens of games installed
>cue current generation
>suddenly every game is 50 gigs minimum, with many breaching the 100 mark

They're huge because they're not compressed at all because compression is a lost art due to the massive decrease in hard drive prices per GB.

>All I'm seeing is that graphicsfags have ruined vidya even more.
Unfortunately, while I know that artist time != programmer time, it's still stupid because artists most likely get more resources allocated and I'd much rather take better gameplay, more missions or what have you instead of better graphics. Although I can understand why some people would rather have stunning visuals, as someone that didn't play much video games, and mostly old titles, playing RotTR recently left me absolutely awed.

I have buyed it right now and mine is only 26.6 GB, why?

>Spend half a day torrenting a 60GB game with shitty internet connection
>it's over in 6 hours
It's like the days of dial-up all over again.

Well visuals sell games at the moment so there is your problem.

>2011 was 6 years ago
>the Shazbowl will be 5 this year
fucking hell
Funniest part about that update was it actually REDUCED the filesize by about 10 gigs.
That's hardly the point though, we shouldn't have to do this to begin with, yeah 4tb HDDs are cheap, but what about when games continue to bloat in size?

If they're bad games I have no problem deleting them after I've finished them.

>buying bad games
I'm not going to say I haven't been burned before, but with steam refunds there's no excuse to keep them around anymore, why even bother finishing?

>be me
>xbox fag
>500gigs
>halo 5 100gigs alone
>gta another 100gigs
>gears 70gigs
>black ops 70gigs
wish I didn't need to install the whole disk on the HD

I'm glad because this trend will kill consoles, or at least limit them to pixelfart metroidvania garbage.
Thank you, based devs.

>only 60 gigs

Gears of War 4 is 115GB mate

If it sounds wrong, it's probably wrong:
game-debate.com/news/23586/final-fantasy-xv-pc-recommended-system-requirements-revealed-170gb-game-download

Internet access is really cheap in Russia, I don't know why, maybe lack of regulations? Also, I live near big city, but still. Also, 8$ is only for internet, phone and TV are on separate bills.

The fact that consoles have to fucking install games is how you know this generation and video games as a whole have turned to absolute fucking dogshit.

>buyed

What he is saying is that 8$ for 100 Mbps (assuming a 100 Mbps up/down) is pretty damn good for that price, especially in a place that you said was in the middle of nowhere, which made it seem unrealistic.

It is actually very good.

>1.2MB/s

I think it has something to do with you guys not getting the internet until after the west, therefor you were able to install better internet infrastructure later on, while we still have shit infrastructure.

>Gears 70 gigs

At launch maybe

115GB and counting now bay-beeee

Because you don't own War of the Chosen. It has some major changes to the engine, causing it to be bigger than the base game.

>it's even bigger on PC
>4k texture pack on console soon goyim, this is not optional
oh boy I can't wait to download an additional 20 gigs for something I will never fucking use.
GEARS 3 WAS LESS THAN 10 GIGS ON THE 360 AND HAS 5x THE CONTENT AS GEARS 4, HOLY FUCK, THIS GENERATION IS A GODDAMN TRAVESTY.

>proving that people aren't willing to pirate shit over 10 GB.
10 GB isn't bad.
That said. If something is ridiculously large, like say Final Fantasy 15. Then yes I might not feel like pirating it because the filesize is fucking ridiculous. But you know what? That doesn't exactly make me any more willing of purchasing it either, because the file size is still ridiculous.

How would ridiculous file sizes deter file sharing but not also deter legitimate purchases? That makes zero sense. Actually buying the game doesn't make the file size any less bothersome.

>witcher 3 has 300 hours of content
>takes up 35 gigs with both expansions installed
>nudoom is a 3 hour game with 70 GB

>installs his games on SSD
lmao
you buy tera hard drives and install your shit on those, nigger

you're bringing your SSD closer to death every time you write a new oversized game into it, dumbass

Witcher 3 is made with slav magic, DOOM isn't.
The magic to compress in the west died when Carmack left, only Slav devs know how to compress now.

Enjoy your disk access stuttering.

This and lack of regulations too. Unlike the US, which is mostly dominated by 2 (3) ISPs, your average city in Russia has about a dozen local ones in addition to major federal-level internet providers. While the barriers to entry are higher now than they were 1-2 decades ago, it's still unlikely that the market will be dominated by 1 or 2 ISPs, with the exception of places where there's one provider only, usually federal level that tries to make their tariffs more or less the same regardless of region. Upgrading the infrastructure in the US isn't the issue of money spent on actual upgrades, it's the issue of money spent on overcoming insane regulations set by lobbyists decades ago.

>2017
>not having 1TB SSD
If you're that poor you might just stick to consoles.

SSD's have a limited read/write cycle. When you overwrite data to your SSD it does limit the life span of the SSD by writing to it over and over. SSD's have a planned failure point and you reach that goal much quicker by constantly overwriting 50gb of data.

yeah we are going to keep getting fucked until they break up Comcast and those giant fucking corps here. Then we need to encourage more competition after said breakup by getting rid of the regulations as a start.

Not compressing means a game doesn't have to be decompressed meaning that they can not have to use said resources on decompressing. Its a common tactic that was used during the PS2/PS1 era and carried over to PS3. Which wouldn't be a problem, except suddenly digital games were becoming a thing and HDDs were there so why not use them.

The problem became, then, that PCs usually had the power to be able to decompress easily enough, but because of fucking consoles no one had to bother anymore.

Err limited read/write cycles*

>oh no i have to wait 5 more seconds during loading time
woe is me
at least i won't randomly lose all data one day

SSDs are massively overpriced
newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Description=1tb ssd&Submit=ENE

where is this stuttering apparent? I haven't noticed any form of staggering and I have 3 nearly full hard drives
if you install your SSD full, that's where is starts to stutter

I've just began to give up on consoles because I have to install a fucking disk now. What the fuck is the point anymore? At least Nintendo doesn't require you to install the fucking game before you play it if you buy a goddamn physical copy, but this is only because their systems use carts as opposed to disks.
Nintendo also knows how to keep file sizes down regardless

I'm not talking about loading times.

haha yeah I totally knew that user!

But seriously what the fuck do I do to prevent that shit?

dude, that is my speed, too.

sendhelp

>Optical media having limited read speed means video games are shit now

You're retarded.

>Dude consoles losing the whole purpose of being plug and play is ok
Fuck off you retarded piece of shit, I shouldn't have to wait for a brand new game to install if I buy a physical copy, the whole point of a console is convenience, having to download a fucking disk isn't convenience, you might as well just build a PC, there is absolutely zero convenience of having a console over a PC now because of shit like this.
