It's "rogue" like. Because it's like the game Rogue. Not color rouge.
Brogue has really good graphics and tight mechanics. It's really hard, though.
Sil is pretty cool but I haven't played it much.
DoomRL (now DRL) has difficulty levels and is pretty accessible.
Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is huge and has a decent community that can help you get better.
Dungeons of Dreadmor
If you want more classic then this: Rogue -> Brogue -> ADOM
Others would be hard for you trust me.
Honestly I would suggest DoomRL. It's free, it's got mouse-based movement and simple keyboard shortcuts, it's relatively short as roguelikes go, it's got a really accessible wiki for shit you don't understand, and if you've ever played Doom it's got a really short learning curve because you already know what most of the weapons, enemies, and terrain effects do.
Brogue and ADOM are some of the hardest RLs I know. Actually OG Rogue is hard as balls too. Is this advanced bait?
Why the fuck everyone say ROUGE?
It´s fucking ROGUELIKE, not ROUgelike
If you want to get a little wacky, Elona is another good option. Pretty easy to get into for a newbie too.
It was my autocorrect because I'm a retarded phone poster, sorry guys
He wants to learn this genre not beat the games.
Rogue is a simple and easy on start to learn it with minimum controls.
Brogue is more complicated with gameplay but still easy to understand and learn, and it even more easy to play with mouse.
ADOM would be the best experience after learning previous two.
Brogue makes Rogue kind of obsolete.
>ADOM would be the best experience after learning previous two.
I'm really not sure how that even follows? ADOM is a very quirky old game.
ADOM has in-game advanced information about its world and stuff how to play etc. It has neat graphics and stuff soon it would get better with animations and music also it's not that old already and is updating with new stuff, also it becomes more user friendly.
For newb ADOM is good because it's static story, quests and locations with not that much random, you have goals and quest what to do it's not just about slashing thousands monsters in random dungeons at all.
You nerds have wrong thoughts about what is the best for new players because you always think from prO mlg point of view.
>also it becomes more user friendly
Oh right, I forgot that thing happened and Biskup fellated a red dragon statuette in a Kickstarter pitch.
>you have goals and quest
Tbh I personally dislike those things in roguelikes, but it's just my opinion.
Poschengband-R, psuedoellipsisposchengbandRemix is the best roguelike.
>Rouge
Caves of Qud is pretty great.
ADOM, Zangband, Brogue and Stone Soup are interesting too.
Nethack is the really iconic one though, even if it's more like an obscure puzzle at times. (and really fuck any game that insists on using it's retarded control scheme)
Brogue, Qud or Pocket Dungeon is probably your best bet. If you really want a beginner stepping stone, Sproggiwood is a lot of fun if you don't mind the aesthetic and will teach you many valuable crossover mechanics/strategies that'll come in useful later on.
first one I played was dwarf fortress' adventure mode.
if you haven't played it, don't let the memes intimidate you and watch a 15 min guide on youtube before starting up
Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is an option
Playing around with Nethack can be fun as well
And Cataclysm DDA is a fun openworld game, with some psuedo dungeons but I would certainly go with
first
NETHACK IS SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT.
>Playing around with Nethack can be fun as well
I completely disagree. Nethack is tedious and obtuse without spoilers and easy and boring with spoilers. There's a reason why crawl and Angband forks and variants are still being created and maintained to this day but the only nethack fork is SLEX which is complete trash.
Caves of Qud and Dungeon Crawl:Stone Soup
are good and quite accessible
That's why I specified play around.
Frankly I believe it's better to start out with Nethack than Rogue.
Qud feels like an open world RPG if you're more comfortable with that. If you're completely new, Stone Soup is a great chance to experiment and learn as you go along. As long as you use a graphical tileset it's very simple to understand, and there's a lot of choice right out the gate if you want to see the repercussions of certain actions.
Caves of Qud because it's simple and has good graphics. Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup because it's more complex and has better graphics.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>paid roguelike
I really like Brogue because it has no bullshit hidden mechanics and everytime you die you know where you fucked up.
The problem is that you're sort of at the mercy of rng when it comes to making your character. You have to use what the game gives you instead of having a lot of choice, some people don't like that because they feel railroaded and sometimes you get shafter by rng but sometimes you get interesting runs.
For example, my first win involved finding a teleport charm and I dumped all my enchment scrolls on it so I just went zipping all over the map avoiding conflict and healing up in empty rooms.
DoomRL is also pretty good, you don't need to learn a lot of keybinds and the mechanics are pretty simple.
You also have Cataclysm DDA but once you die a couple of times and learn the basic stuff you realize that once you survive the first day you're pretty much immortal as long as you don't do anything retarded or you get instakilled by a turret or bad luck.
ADOM has gotten me through many boring lectures throughout my life.
