As someone who never owned a sega console, though I did get to play some sonic on a friend's sega when I was really young, this game is pretty damn good. 2D sonic holds up well.

It sounds silly now, but the whole moving fast thing in the original Sonic was really novel at the time Genesis was out. Now that the novelty has worn off, it's easy to dismiss it as garbage tier platforming. I think of Sonic as Pepsi where Mario was Coke. It's all empty calories at the end of the day anyhow.
