At the end of the day, Does Samus Returns really do Metroid 2 justice? Is AM2R better? Was Nintendo right to shut it down?

AM2R is better IMO
And yes Nintendo was right to shut it down, especially when they were working on the inferior version.
AM2R is a basic 1 to 1 remaster, much like what zero mission was to metroid 1
Samus returns is an entirely new experience, same premise, but entirely new game, with a surprising amount of content.
They are 2 separate games, it is like comparing apples and oranges,
Samus Returns does Metroid II justice and the entire series justice. I really don't know how anyone can think otherwise. This is what fans have been begging for, and Nintendo delivered fantastically. I would say AM2R and Samus Returns are both great for different reasons and shouldn't be compared. Pretty much equally as good as the other when it comes to quality, but I prefer new ideas more than the same old stuff so I liked Samus Returns more. Nintendo was justified in shutting it down because they were working on their own Metroid II remake. Plus, shutting it down didn't do shit. The full version of AM2R is so fucking easy to find just like any other fan content Nintendo "shuts down". If anything, shutting AM2R down was good for AM2R because it gave it much more attention than it would have gotten originally.
I wish I could remap the movement to the Dpad on the 3DS. The circle pad feels so imprecise.
>Does Samus Returns really do Metroid 2 justice?
Yes
>Is AM2R better?
Yes
>Was Nintendo right to shut it down?
No
AM2R is more of a remake, while MSR is a reimagining. Both should be played over its original anyway
AM2R is what if we got a remake in Gen 6
Samus Returns is a remake in Gen 8
Both are great, but Samus Returns for sure has QOL changes that make it easier, tis to be expected
No joke, I am not a fan of the circle pad movement but it is so worth it for that 360° aiming. No more bunny hopping to get the right angle to hit enemies, you can freely aim on a moments notice. That and wall jumping seems less finicky now,
of course nintendo was right to shut it down, it's their ip. nice of them too let the guy finish the game first tho
this might sound like subjective bullshit but there was much more love put into am2r and i felt it nailed better the things people love about metroid
i haven't finished samus returns yet but it's clearly a return to form for the franchise. tho i'm not a fan of the parry or all those zubats whose sole purpose is trying to get you to use it.
>QOL changes
You mean casual enabling changes. Aeon abilities are less abilities than they are a glorified Golden Tanuki suits.
I liked the game but that bullshit is there just to make the game easier to obnoxious levels.
>nice of them too let the guy finish the game first tho
More like a dick move, letting him get all synced just to say OI FUCK OFF CUNT
Ehhhh?
Lightning armour is solely there for puzzles or backtracking through an area quickly so you can ignore enemies
The scan pulse is an easy button, but I rarely found myself making much use of it unless I was stuck and then it was a god send
The rapid fire is OP, but it drains energy very quickly, it's is like the super missiles. Good for bosses and tough enemies.
The time slow mechanic is primarily used for puzzles and replaces the speed booster
I genuinely don't understand the hate for them, they were honestly a pretty interesting mechanic

This
>AM2R is a 1 to 1 remaster
How about you play it before talking huh?
>60 something metroids instead of 38
>The entire hydro-plant/core reactor segment
>tons of extra shit not found in GBC
I think the settings in am2r were defiantly better, displaying a far more advanced chozo with the different power stations, factories, and laboratories rather then temple after temple
>Spending $45 on a remake
The fact nintendo doesnt price cut like the competition is stupid. Even Yakuza Kiwami which was built from the ground up same as Y0 was sold at $30 when they could have esily sold for $60. Metroid 2 has no reason to be more than $20 especially when its still on the fucking eshop.
Even more so, the deluxe steel book version of Kiwami was $30 The deluxe metroid was fucking $80
If you think Samus Returns isn't a completely different game from Metroid II you might be a fucking moron.
Its as much a remake as Ratchet and clank. Same rpemise new game, still the same concept just re-imagined. Still not worth paying $45 on.
Yeah, and we have the Binding of Isaac case.
From 7$, the original game + DLC, to 15$ for the demake.
Controversial opinion.
They're both good and the infighting is stupid.
user, nintenbros will happily spend ten dollars for Snes roms, don't even try to speak some sense into them.
Nintendo didnt shut it down
They allowed it to be completed and released
Im only in area 4 but so far the area themes have been identical to both the original game and AM2R. The surface, the temple, the underground dam and the mining robot facility.
I think AM2R had more distinct regions but that's just a difference in style. It was following the comic book vibes of the GBA games, while Samus Returns is more like the original Metroid 2 where the sections of SR388 bleed together into one big sprawling cavern.
SR is just Sakamoto trying to overwrite the Metroid canon with his vision.
AM2R is a better remake because Samus returns is barely a remake at all
AM2R = Metroid Zero mission 2
Samus returns = Lord of shadow MoF: 2
>I am not a fan of the circle pad movement
hol up. are you telling me you can't play with the d pad ?
Timestop and Beam Burst drain your energy by so fucking much to use, and in boss combat all Lightning Armour does is give you ablative health, which is useful considering enemies in this game do far more damage than anything else seen in the series (Fucking digger mulched me for 3 tanks)
The only one that does casualize things is the scanner.
Exagerated or not, he's not wrong.
In fact, the comparison to Zero Mission is spot on. That game also had a lot of new stuff, but for the most part the only added, not changed the base game outside of modernizing the assets.
The secret lab I feel is still far better final zone thematically than what we got. The queen fight in am2r, while more basic in what is actually does attack-wise is a more memorable fight. Brawling with the queen throughout the lab, being pushed futher back through cramped hallways into a corner before finally painting the room with her entrails with one last power bomb will always be more memorable then another boss fight that blends in with the other boss fights that ends rather anticlimactically.
scanner is the only one that comes close to that, the others are all for puzzle solving.
I wish Returns used sprites, I hate low quality models
nintendo was right to wait a few days before shutting it down, letting real fans get the game, but not setting a precedent for legit companies to steal their IPs.
>Does Samus Returns really do Metroid 2 justice?
Despite its own problems I'd say it's very reasonable for what it set out to do when a GB game was the basis. I would have preferred the Zero Mission treatment instead, but thankfully in this timeline we already had AM2R to fulfill such a 'what if' moment and so I don't feel too burned by that.
>Was Nintendo right to shut [AM2R] down?
Yes, even the dev didn't blame them for doing so.
This. The models look like ass on 3DS. Its like how bad prime hunters looked when you actually saw polygon samus. High quality sprites would've been preffered.
Considering that the secret ending of M:SR shows the X-Parasite rising up I would thing it would be awesome for a potential Fusion Remake or sequel to use the Octoverse Traveler 2d-3d concept along the lines of what you said.
>Yes
Maybe, each have own highlights that makes it all >subjective
>Legally yes, personally fuck no
Would have benefited a lot form going the M&L route. Not style wise but graphically. I assume they're really high-quality sprites.
I really do like the 3D backgrounds. It's a shame my glasses make it hard to get the right 3D distance.
I liked Returns MUCH more than AM2R, which I think is the worst of the 2d games
I prefer a metroid 5 already. What the fuck happened after Fusion for fuck sake?
How so?
Serious question; how would the game rate against other modern metroidvania like ori and rainworld and hollow knight ?
>Does Samus Returns really do Metroid 2 justice?
Yes
>Is AM2R better?
No
>Was Nintendo right to shut it down?
It didn't get shut down, the game was released fine. If Nintendo wanted, it could have pulled the plug much earlier and completely prevent the game from being released in any capacity.
234 missiles, 28 Super Missiles, 8 Power Bombs, 10 energy tanks and a decently hefty Aeion gauge. How close am I to getting everything? In Area 8 with only 1 metroid left and afraid of triggering a point of no return.
Samus Returns is the better game. Better aesthetic, gameplay, tight map design and a superior ost. I loved AM2R but Samus Returns brings a level of polish to the table that one man can't pull off.
Not him, but the metroid fights in SR are much cooler, and that's a bog part of the game
I think its more that 3DS res is really bad.
Citra might make it look better, It made Poké Sun/Moon look great and made Planet Robobot look fantastic.
You can check the percentages of items remaining in each area, check the map
Yes, yes, no. They were entirely out of line, especially considering how different the two works are.
Most of the added stuff feels very amateurish. Recycled bosses from old games, etc. Some of the animations reek of fangame too, like the enemy death animation and most of the sound design. Even stuff like the Metroid bosses start to feel really tedious. Especially compared to Samus Returns
Very well. Metroid remains king of the metroidvanias
AM2R isn't even shut down, they just released new 1.3.1 version few days ago and have one more final update planned.
>Metroid remains king
*Queen. That honor still belongs to the Vania's
>AM2R isn't even shut down, they just released new 1.3.1 version few days ago and have one more final update planned.
I thought it got C&D preventing that after the DMCAs
AM2R's new update added extra attack to the Queen and whole new second phase music.
Nothing. Because Fusion never happened. It was all the fever dream of a madman named Yoshio.
The d pad is used to select the aeion abilities, circle pad controls movement. It is awkward at first, but you get used to it fairly quickly
Both are good, honestly. AM2R does some things better than SR, but SR also does other things better than AM2R.
>I thought it got C&D preventing that after the DMCAs
They did, but they don't care, they're developing it still under new identities.
All of the planned features that were supposed to be there before Nintendo axed them and more are already implemenented except for the secret ending (which Samus Returns ripped off) and the extra artworks.
They're currently working on those last two things which will be released in final update for AM2R.
AM2R is completely shit. I haven't played Return of Samus, but I'd bet fair money that it is better.
>Home planet of Metroids has doors
Metroids are artificial life forms created to stop the X because the X are unstable aeion energy and metroid eat that energy shit up.
So Sakamoto can't help but continue shitting all over the Metroid series. Good to know.
SR388 is pretty much a Chozo planet.
It's a Chozo planet though.
The vast majority of that was already known to us in fusion.
What about the things he said clashes with any of the Metroid lore, though?
This has been canon for almost a decade, user. Metroids have always been a creation of the Chozo, which at the time populated SR388
You have never played metroid
>was already known to us in fusion.
>Fusion
So like I said, he can't help but continue shitting all over the Metroid series.
The entirety of Other M and Fusion. The Chozodia portion of Zero Mission.
Goddamn, you're a moron.
Other M is the only smudge in otherwise really strong lore. There isn't a single plot inconsistancy outside of that blunder. I don't know what you are talking about in Fusion that is supposedly so bad
Fusion is metroid 4. Get the fuck over it. Its cannon and nothing your bitchy ass says will change that.
>There isn't a single plot inconsistancy outside of that blunder. I don't know what you are talking about in Fusion that is supposedly so bad
Other M is a direct result of Fusion's "lore." They go hand in hand. Zero Mission's post-Mother Brain content made Samus look like a fucking idiot and the whole game contradicts the original Metroid. Samus was already a well-known bounty hunter by the time of the original Metroid, which is the entire reason why she was tasked with going to Zebes to destroy Mother Brain. Zero Mission makes that task out like it's her first assignment. If that's the case, why would anyone hire someone so inexperienced for such a mission? It makes no sense.
Fusion being canon doesn't mean it's not trash or that it isn't a black stain on the franchise.
You're a black stain, go clean yourself of your shit opinion, faggot.
>Fusion is a black stain on the franchise
>Despite actually going back to the Sr388 routes of 2.
If anything is a "Stain" on the franchise, it's super for being a redeux of metroid 1 with a better engine. Your logic is flawed. Super could not exist and 2-4 would work just as well.
>Other m is a direct result of fusion
So? That doesn't make fusion bad.
The prequels were a direct result from the original Star Wars trilogy. Does that mean those original movies were bad? Obviously not.
Also learn the difference between plot hole and retcon. Just because Zero Mission is her first mission now, doesn't mean its contridicting anything. The original Metroids instruction manual hasn't been canon since before you were born.
>Why would anyone hire someone so inexperienced
Did you even play it? Do you have any idea what you are talking about? The game opens with Samus explaining that the reason she is going is because Zebes is her home planet and she sees it as her right to defend it.
Nintendo wasn't right to cut it down in any case because AM2R was free, and also very meticulous about telling you where it comes from.
AM2R would not have cut into Samus Return's business, whatsoever.
People can't stop comparing the two, though. It's very possible that playing am2r ruined SR's experience for many people.
I thought it looked like ass in the videos and screenshots, but I think it looks fantastic once I got the game and turned the 3D on to give it it's depth.
Maybe it looks worse on an XL though
>It's very possible that playing am2r ruined SR's experience for many people
These people are dumb. For me it's just "holy shit two Metroid games, awesome!", but to some it looks like the end of the world if you say one is better than the other.
hold on what.
proof/sauce please, even here I've not heart jack shit about them continuing development under new names so I don't believe that you guys aren't just shitposting.
All the same, one of them is free and they were completely different takes on the concept (AM2R being a more literal remake) so what reason would anybody have had to just buy SR and play them both since one way or another you only need to buy one to play both.
Because 'muh Mercury Steam'. Some people refuse to admit they can make a good game.
>So? That doesn't make fusion bad.
Every bad thing in Other M has its origin in Fusion. Fusion has the same terrible writing, the same linearity with forced lockouts, the same plot-based unlocking of abilities, the same space station environment, etc. etc.
>The original Metroids instruction manual hasn't been canon since before you were born.
I was born before the original Metroid came out.
If you care about difficulty, then just don't use them.
>WAAAAH CASUALS ARE GETTING INTO MY GAME
Fuck off, the only people who want you here are your own pea-brained ilk.
Just because other m made perfectly fine concepts bad, doesn't make them bad in the first place
>Born before the original Metroid
You have a strange way of showing it
You sound like a Bungie faggot complaining that the Flood were dust before becoming parasites.
>only snes game that is 10 is Earthbound
Yeah guess you don't know what you're talking about.
Either way bro, emulation tends to suck. At least when you buy a game from the eshop you don't have input lag.
Beat both now, loved both.
I'm going to compare the bosses.
>Alpha & Gamma Metroids
Draw. Something about the Metroid fights in SR that bugs me is they restrict your movement in the rooms for no reason. Want to spiderball onto a wall and crawl away to safety? Too bad, wall gunk. Stupid.
>Arachnus
AM2R wins. SR barely even tried here.
>Zeta Metroid
SR gets the edge for realizing them so well. Doing melee counters on them were one of the highlights of that game.
>Diggernaut vs Tank Prototype/The Tester
AM2R wins. Diggernaut's actual fight was one of the few things that reminded me this was a MercuryStream game. Having to wait for it to cycle through boring attacks and climb up it's arms/around it's face wasn't as fun as it should've been in concept. I enjoyed the Tank's escape sequence more than Diggernaut's auto-scroller and Tester is one of the best bosses in AM2R.
>Omega Metroid
Draw. Both were fairly hard, possibly the hardest bosses of each game. AM2R would get the edge personally based on it's intro and I don't care too much for some of it's attack patterns in SR.
>Queen Metroid
AM2R wins. Fight was so much more frantic there but she looks incredible in SR.
>RIDLEY vs Every Extra AM2R Boss
SR fucking wins. As much as I LOVE the Torizo fight and atmosphere building to Genesis, SR's fight here is one of the best in the god damn series.
End results: Samus Returns BARELY takes it. If it wasn't for that FUCKING RIDLEY fight AM2R would've taken it easily.
>At the end of the day, Does Samus Returns really do Metroid 2 justice?
Is a great experience so far, when I finish the game I be back with you
>Is AM2R better?
Can't tell yet, so far SR first 2 hours are very strong, and bosses are getting more and more complex.
>Was Nintendo right to shut it down?
Did they? I can play it anytime I want, is not like SE that killed off many projects before they even started, like that chrono project. fuck you SE sigh..
Something is bothering me though, are the people complaining about the counter legit or just trolls? I am really, REALLY bad at using the counter, so I use the ice beam and one missile on each enemy, super easy and fast clean.
So I ask again, are the people that bitch about the counter really that upset?
Just found the first Zeta
its kicking my ass
It's a Chozo planet, genius.
When it does the green balls, use your Lightning Armour then Grapple it down.
There's nothing about Zero Mission that implies Samus is inexperienced. She might be missing a lot of abilities, but she's still able to run forever, jump her full hight (which is tall), tank attacks that would kill a normal person, refill her energy tank by killing things, shoot a beam weapon with unlimited ammunition, drive her own spaceship, and survive underwater or in a vacuum with her suit. That puts her on a slightly higher level than a Galactic Federation commando. To say that Samus is "inexperienced" in Zero Mission is just speaking relative to the godlike set of powers she acquires throughout the game. She starts the game off strong, and ends it being unbelievably powerful.
>Mfw this is the hardest Metroid we ever had
holy fucking SHIT, I die 8 times already in the last hour, I can't fucking imaging hard mode, this game is fucking HARD.
Imagine the any% speedruns that skip optional powerups
