Holy shit. That Diggernaut chase sequence was hype as hell

Holy shit. That Diggernaut chase sequence was hype as hell.
Could this be the GOTY?

I don't know about GOTY but this is exactly what the series needed. This game is awesome.

This game does absolutely nothing new whatsoever, but I think Metroid fans would be pissed if Nintendo pulled some "new" shit for the series for a 3rd time

This. SR is quite good and it's just what the series needs right now. A well done back to basics entry.

>melee counter
>Aeion Abilities
>the robot chase sequence
>Teleport Stations
>map markers
>a rogue faction of warlike Chozo
>not new
user, pls.

Nintendo will win GOTY, quesion is what game

>enter Area 4
>expect a new gauntlet of 10 metroids
>Only one icon lights up on the alter
I'm going to fight the Zeta Metroid, aren't I?

If odd, Breath of the Wild
If even, Super Mario Odyssey
If zero, they don't win

I'm saying it doesn't do anything major or groundbreaking. It does change the camera like Other M, introduce motion controls, or anything like that; it's a pure 2D Metroid with some new quality-of-life improvements.

Figures

I'm not surprised desu

>tfw the actual best games like Yakuza 0, Metroid and Automata won't even get honorable mentions or nominations in select categories
>BotW or some Western trash will take all the major awards

doesn't*

>nothing new whatsoever
>I meant it doesn't make completely absurdly changes from the game it's a remake of
wtf user

You're not getting what I'm saying, my dude
Not trying to argue with you though, we're all Metroid fans here

Nigga we haven't had a proper 2D Metroid in fucking FIFTEEN YEARS.

A game doesn't have to be groundbreaking to be good. Sometimes a game is allowed to just try and be a good game.

Innovation isn't always a good thing. Just look at Star Fox Zero. That tried to do something new and groundbreaking, and everybody fucking hated it. Or look at Sonic, which constantly tries to be new and groundbreaking, and everybody fucking hated it.

I'm not saying it's a bad game.
I'm the OP.
My favorite thing about this game is the fact that it doesn't do anything new whatsoever; if it did, I'd be mad at Nintendo for fucking with Metroid AGAIN.

I haven't played the game yet, but adding a melee counter attack as a core ability seems plenty new already

>tfw you hate 2.5D games and they always feel cheap and imprecise no matter how untrue it is

Goddammit I just want Nintendo to put out another fully 2D game

Perhaps you ought to have clarified that at the offset, cause now it looks like you're backpedaling. Especially since you started the thread praising something the game does that is new. Just saying.

>any Metroid
>GOTAnything

That's on you, user.
SR feels extremely tight; probably the tightest in the series.
That said, the last one I played was Fusion around 2 years ago, so I could be thinking incorrectly

nice argument
MP1 is easily in the top 3 best games ever
if you didn't like it, it's because you got stuck at the Artifact hunt

>mfw freezing a Metroid and it only stays frozen for half a millisecond

You're right, user.
I admit defeat.

>tfw Diggernaut steals the Power Bombs and walks away
>even Samus can only stand there, dumbfounded
Rude!

>that delightful feel when you defeat it, and Samus nonchalantly kills it off for griefing her the whole game
That's what you get, asshole.

Charge Beam, nigga.

Artifact hunt is the very definition of artificial length, which is lazy game design. Prime is objectively garbage.

Is as tight as Zero Mission, which is the top one regarding that, Super is a sloppy mess and is probably the top 2D game still, so is really not a factor that affects how good a metroid game is.

Im so good I collect them as I go on because Im not a faggot
Prime 2 definitely has artificial length

>Im so good I collect them as I go on because Im not a faggot

but what about the ones you cant get with the necessary upgrades? its annoying backtracking, MP1 would be waaaaay better if the artifact hunt wasnt required to beat the game.

If you charge the shot they stay frozen for longer. Also useful for platforming.

>as I go on

Oh look at that, Samus being characterized through body language without the use of extraneous dialogue, along with back story being conveyed though images and a lack of droning narration. Damn, that must've been a real fuckin' challenge.

>Samus
>character

You waifu virgins are delusional. Samus is as much of a character as L-Block. Enjoy eating shit.

they took notes

Probably, considering how much obvious Prime influence SR has. The baby metroid scene is especially good for non-verbal storytelling.

Imagine if when that scene happens you hear "Some creatures use the powers of others to capture their prey"

last segment made me rage, but once it was over I felt good. nice to have an actually harrowing chase sequence in a metroid game, usually the only time you have to go fast is the escape sequence at the end, and the timer there is always ridiculously generous.

...

Somebody post that art of the new Zero Suit

>tfw huge metroid fan all my life
>tfw really looking forward to this since it's announcement
>tfw start the game and immediately hate the scan ability/teleports/map markers/how trivial countering makes the game/the sluggish way you have to hold L and manaully aim while standing stationary instead of holding L and R to aim up left or up right
>force myself to finish it anyway because maybe it gets better
>it doesn't

I tried really hard not to be let down. Hopefully the Prime formula is more letdown-proof.

Samus is back to being a fucking badass in this game, I love it. The cutscenes are amazing, especially the one where Ridley appears and when you counter an Omega.

>scan ability/teleports/map markers/how trivial countering
Wow user, those are all things that you don't have to use because you're not forced to!

No one makes you use the scan if don't want to user

Ugh. Please no, SR is helping me finally ease the pain of that wretched piece of shit. We got real Metroid games talk about now. A solid 2d reimagining, a quality fan remake, and Prime 4 in development. This is a happy place, user.

>just don't use most of the game's mechanics that are bound to face buttons haha

I could easily avoid using scan, but the stationary left trigger aiming gave me cancer and there's actually no alternative.

Btw another thing I forgot to add, it has that nu-nintendo thing that they do with all 3ds games, where every time you do anything the camera pans somewhere else to show you what you just effected/unlocked.

>Game keeps crashing
Either my 3DS or my cart is screwed.

yeah, that part isn't great but doesn't take away from all of the good shit the game does. lots of great games have deep flaws, but the highs overshadow this. for example, everyone loves MGS1 even though it objectively controls like dogshit

I agree, it's just that I noticed the change in story telling as I was playing the game. I'm not intending to shitpost.

Happy times indeed, user!
See you next mission!

>imprecise
More of a combination between 30fps, 3ds, and circle pad than truly being imprecise. This game should be on the Switch so the visuals and control could look/feel better.

The thing about Samus is that despite not talking, she's kinda hammy. She really likes to do lots of over the top action poses. Like when collecting metroid DNA, it looks like she's more or less fist pumping. When interfacing her cannon with ammo stations and what not, she slaps it in there, just because. I don't even have to go into the quick times. Also, she has this adorably sassy little hip wiggle when entering elevators, for some reason. The best one though is destroying the robot without looking.

This game did a great job of conveying her personality. All business, but somewhat flamboyant.

>hate the scan ability
This is literally optional and you can keep it unequipped for basically the entire game. It's only required to have on at all until you get the Lightning Armor.

This is as retarded as hating on Prime for its hint system you can turn off. It's casualization, sure, but in a form you have complete control over. Just like how nobody seems to hate on Zero Mission for its waypoint statues since they're all avoidable.

>teleports
Even AM2R did this. There is no way to make Metroid 2's map worth backtracking without a teleporting system. It's a downwards shaft. At best you could replace the teleporters with elevators that lead back to the surface but then you end up with a glorified hub like Fusion.

>map markers
There is nothing about this feature that is bad and you're just being autistic at this point.

>how trivial countering makes the game
The counter stops being the most effective method of killing everything when you get the ice beam in Area 1.
It's probably one of the least efficient ways to combat enemies.

>the sluggish way you have to hold L and manaully aim while standing stationary instead of holding L and R to aim up left or up right
You can aim at 45 degree angles by tilting the control stick in that direction while running.

>Just like how nobody seems to hate on Zero Mission for its waypoint statues since they're all avoidable.
Wait, aren't some of the statues in ZM forced? Like, they'll only move out of the way if you use them?
But then again there's a way to disable that with hacks IIRC so it's a non issue

One the first one that introduces you to how they work.
The rest of them can pretty much be avoided. At least in speed runs, I don't remember if any of them block you in a 100% run.

I wish the game had an option to map standard diagonal aim to the New 3DS's ZL and the morph ball to ZR, or hell, make an option to have the C-stick perform 360 degree aim

My all time favorite shooter is Timesplitters 2 and FP, which do literally nothing new to FPS. Not trying to be innovative in games is a stance I've understood for some time.

You seem really upset that I didn't like SR. I'll try to like Prime 4, I'm sorry

Timesplitters 2 was pretty fucking innovative. That map maker let you do some really crazy shit, and Timesplitters FP only got more innovative.

Stay assmad, fucboi

...

Remember fusion? You're gonna know why the last boss was that one

I want her to fucking choke me to death with her thighs

When the fuck do you get Super Missiles? I seem to be at least halfway through and I still haven't acquired them

I love how Samus felt during gameplay, but feel the set pieces looked floaty and lacked punch.

I want to break my face on those abs

If you take time to look at the background it also explains a lot of the back story

I wonder what kind of abnormal woman would make her out of the ordinary height a big deal.

I'd say the melee counter alone is a pretty big change, since it effects not only the way combat works but also enemy AI.

Mario Odyssey will sweep the show and you know it. I always feel so conflicted about stuff like this.

You can use diagonal aiming while running and on ledges if you tilt the circle pad. It's specially useful during the acid bubbles part near the end.

Probably the person who edited that picture, changing her foot position, adding muscle and abs, and adding pubes.

I don't think Samus Returns is perfect at all. It's got its issues.

What I'm baffled by is how Sup Forums keeps doubling down on complaints that aren't even problems. The counter is hardly necessary in combat after the first quarter of the game and the "casualization" complaints are nonsense when Super and Zero Mission are way more of a joke than this game despite being the boards favorites. But they're only thing being talked about and I don't get it.

Can't we talk about the shoddy map design in the early sections of the game, how there's only three worthwhile bosses, the inability to skip any key items even when they were skippable in the original game, or how repetitive all the alpha and gamma metroid fights become? Those are way more noteworthy issues with the game than shit like the optional scan.

It's a late upgrade. I feel the upgrade curve was poorly handled desu

this is really one of those games that gets better as it goes on

I agree on the map and bosses, but seeing some videos you do get some leeway as to how to get some upgrades. I've seen jirard with the wave beam only and I actually got the spazer beam before wave.
Playing Sr made me value the changes in map done by am2r, as well as the button layout. I really think the control scheme in SR is inconveniently cumbersome.

The scan is bad, sorry bub. No amount of rationalization is gonna fix that.

If you're going to post, post the official image.

Yeah. We were just fine with xray vision. Or maybe even have sonar but don't give me the fucking secrets and locations of the items.

how have you not come to expect this by now?

I died in that sequence like ten times. I don't know if I was just reatrded or what, but I kept fucking up the very end part with the grapple points.

Thighjobs have never really interested me until now

>Morph Ball down the Queen's throat.
>The camera follows you in.

Why? Those heels are retarded.

But the painted on abs and pubes fix everything?

if you've got a version with just the feet edited post it.

>yakuza

LOL

SR, Automata, BotW, Mario, and possibly xenoblade 2 are the only true contenders, but lets be real it's more like BotW/Mario for game journos

Sadly I don't think such an image exists

SR and Automata have no chance. Hell, SR will lose Best Handheld Game to either a Switch game out of technicality, or a dumb fucking mobile game

pubes it is then

Wait you can morph ball in? Fuck I just fired missiles at her

that scene was kino

You just reminded me.
If at the Game Awards this game loses to some piece of garbage mobile game I'm going to FUCKING LOSE IT.

They look better in-game

Spotted the pleb that didn't play Metroid 2
I actually don't blame you. AM2R was even more neat in that, if you rolled in her during the last phase and dropped a power bomb, she'd have a unique death scene where she's splattered all over the corridor

OP I don't know if you're still here but I got really mad reading the exchange at the beginning of the thread with those dumb ass niggers not understanding what you meant by SR not being groundbreaking. I just want you to know that I got it.

sweet

So you CAN do it. I wondered if you could, but then I thought it would have a completely obvious sign. Like, they'd have her tongue flash red so you'd grapple beam in her mouth, or something like that.

What category would it be in danger of losing to a mobile game in, do you think?

Handheld and mobile games are in the same category.
In 2015 Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate lost to fucking Lara Croft Go. And I even like Lara Croft Go, but Jesus Christ.

Even without playing metroid 2 I should have known, there are countless examples of going inside bosses with the morph ball.
