Pokemon Gold was my first Pokemon game, so I felt nothing.
You will not believe how disappointed I was when I found out two regions wasn't the standard for the series.

As a kid, I remember staring at the cartridge in disbelief that they managed to fit so much onto such a small thing. But of course we all now know Johto and Kanto are both pretty devoid of content.

Didn't ever go to Kanto the first time I played on a partially translated rom. Blew my mind when I found it after getting the game in English.

I started with Blue, and I thought you'd be able to go back to Johto and Kanto in R/E.
I scoured all of Hoenn looking for a way there. I found Rayquaza looking for it.

Fuck that was annoying. You gotta fight like ten swimmers on the way over, IIRC.

I started with Crystal, so I was just excited that there was a second map. Then it ended up being really barren. I like the Kanto wild battle music in Johto games a lot though.

I would probably get back into Pokemon if this was a thing. It feels so fucking lazy that they did this for the second game and decided not to do anything equivalent going forward. I mean, I can't really blame them since they're making bazooka bucks for minimal effort, but man it's disappointing.

and then you realize that Kanto is an incredibly boring region after your first experience. Kinda mad they couldn't make Johto in RSE though especially considering that Johto pokemon in gen 3 were hard to get.

Same, although for me it was Silver. Ruby was such a disappointment to me when I found out only one region was available.

My first game was silver, but I knew who red was. I had a bigger shock when I battled him than going into Kanto. Since it was a sequel I thought it was just standard to do that.

there's still tons of Johto pokemon that aren't in the game. That's why Colosseum/Gale Of Darkness predominately feature gen 2 Pokemon. Otherwise completing the National Dex would of been impossible.

Remember when they released the trembo the badass elephant game.... and buyers found that they all bought the DEMO VERSION of the game? AND they misspelled the name of the game in the executable, so you had to fix something in the install folder before it would run?

Honestly one of my best vidya memories.

I always find myself missing the different colored towns, to be honest. Even in the new games.

I have very fond memories of gen 2 but I honestly can't call the pokemon designs good, even with nostalgia goggles on, most are lazy

By the time Ruby and Sapphire had come out, almost the entire original Pokémon team had left or gone on to better things. Gold & Silver, arguably Crystal, is the last time we felt the touch of the original Pokémon team.

It was digital sales, but yes. They digitally sold people this game, and when they went to play it, they were playing the demo. And when Game Freak updated it to not be the demo, it didn't work because the installation folder's name was called "Trumbo" instead of "Tembo"

Mew, for example was put in at last minute in Red and Green, by some random developer, who didn't tell anyone. The higher-ups never approved this addition, but the coding for the originals was so gaddamn sloppy they didn't find it.
