i second this
>they turn it into first-person RPG with slowmotion super powers, more Glory Kills, and branching dialog choices
sure, Quake was kinda meant to be the CRPG to end all CRPGs, but that's not what happened and not why people love it today.
So fat, Bethesfucks have not gotten any of the games right even once. Ye wider console-audiences are way too attractive to them.
I'd love that, but they went straight for Quake 3.
What would be awesome is if they rebooted Commander Keen or Heretic.
Only if they make Shamblers remotely enjoyable to fight.
Quake 1 is the only flavor of Quake I want. But its accidental creation is why they never revisited it. They must be blind to not appreciate what they'd created.
Games today don't have the guts to make something as dangerous as the shambler. Probably because wimps like you can't hash it.
They're not difficult to kill, they're just completely tedious and awful.
can you freely download quake 1 like you can doom and all its numerous sourceports?
What's so tedious about them? Running away? Keeping a wall between you? That shit's intense.
Not freely, but I doubt someone would stop you.
Or they had the good grace to not ruin it and drive it into the ground like soulless jews
user, they made it up to Quake 4. What are you admiring them for when they still milked the franchise?
Having to play it like fucking Call of Duty and pop in and out of cover is completely counterintuitive to what makes Quake enjoyable and it's boring. The only way to make them even slightly enjoyable is to bait their melee attack.
It's the same reason I hate Archviles, only minus the eye-searing fire graphics that give me seizures.
Fuck Quake, give me Hexen. Doesn't even have to be Hexen, just a goddamn dark/Gothic fantasy FPS with some interesting weapons and enemies goddamn it
>play on nightmare
>shamblers are now easier
They changed the style enough between sequels to not retrospectively ruin the original
Quake was a pretty weird game. Theres knights, orges and castles. But then theres shit like lasers, guns, and chainsaws.
>any game that requires you to take cover is "Call of Duty"
What an asinine comparison. God forbid a game asks you to play with caution or die for your actions.
if they reboot quake, i want it to be this quake
Hold out for a 40k shooter that's good
They got the perfect mix of Gothic and Future 80s
They still revisited the Quake 2 style with Quake 4. What's the difference between making a sequel to one but not the other?
Popping in and out of cover to attack between lightning rounds feels like fucking Gears of War. It's cancer in an otherwise fun run n' gun game.
Greetings Mortal
I'm really tired of the Strogg shit
but we already got SPESS MAHREEN
fuck sci-fi man I want some straight-up fantasy FPS
not FPSRPG, just goddamn FPS where instead of shooting a gun I cast lightning bolts and swing a mace that summons ghosts to fuck up everyone's shit
I'm playing Q1 for the first time, was raised on doom and HL so I'm trying to catch up on what I missed. can I really not aim vertically?
Q1 is incredible. The environment design is 10/10, id pls remake I'll buy it in a heartbeat
Stop rattling off franchises in Sup Forums's shitlist for your weak little comparisons. They don't hold up and you aren't fooling anyone. It's a different variety of enemy out of dozens so the experience is varied and you have to play differently to counter them all.
It's not fucking Call of Duty where everyone is hitscan. It's not fucking Gears of War with "chest high walls" every 5 fucking feet. You are just letting one enemy that requires you to play a little differently from the rest sour an experience because you don't like to be inconvenienced. Maybe just cope with this one actually pretty fucking rare enemy and stop being a whiny little bitch.
ideally if you were to reboot this game you would redo quake 1 and a second game would be the ranger fighting more eldritch horrors instead of the sci fi shit that started with quake 2.
Tell me more about what quake could've been
But I like the strogg. They are a cool enemy
The SNG and LG absolutely tear through shamblers. RG does it reasonably quickly. SG makes it a long grueling fight, yes, but far from obnoxiously so, mostly just long enough that you're likely to take a hit or two.
>b-b-b-b-but I don't have ammo
Resource management is a key part of that game you dumb shit.
>cover is a mechanic misused in other games, that means it's bad in this
Come on nigger. Actively dodging attacks by using terrain is not even vaguely similar to hiding behind terrain to avoid hitscan bullshit and waiting for health regen.
Wolfenstein isn't rebooted, it's a continuation. Doom was only a soft reboot as it's the same doomguy being pulled into an alternate universe of after locking himself in hell in Doom 64.
Just continue Quake after the original instead of featuring the strogg, but first I want better hitboxes and netcode for Champions.
>now that wolfenstein and doom are rebooted, it's time to reboot quake from the beginning.
Naw.
Hexen.
> can I really not aim vertically?
you have +mlook enabled though the console?
>implying soft-reboots are any better than proper reboots
Even back in the 90's the machine-human abominations theme was done to death. The strogg should never have existed. The eldritch monsters were far more unique.
If done correctly, they are. D44M basically made every WAD canon.
my nigger
have you seen ziggurat? it's basically heretic but with randomized levels and monster closets
and bland as fuck visual design and shitty weapons and no ammo
I tried it a while back and hated it, then got it on a humble bundle and tried it again and hated it just as much
it is so utterly lacking in flavor and so sloppy that just playing it makes me angry that there's not something better out there
I'm such an idiot, thank you
>yfw nuDOOM's level design is absolute garbage compared to the sprawling, nonlinear sandboxes of Quake
Was supposed to be an RPG based off a D&D campaign the id guys did, I don't think there was much they actually did on that idea beyond a game engine and some assets. Then they realized time was running out and someone opted to take the FPS route.
There's no point. D44M and Wolfenstein effectively carried over what made the originals great, sure, but in those cases it was mostly just blowing away tonnes of enemies and having simple, mindless fun. Quake is a far tighter, deeper experience. You can't sell FPS combat being fluid, resource-management intensive and having such intricate spacing concerns as Quake did like you can sell blowing up monsters mindlessly. If they remade Quake as an FPS it's going to be based on what the general masses think the spirit of the game is which is why we got Quake Champions, rather than on what actually made the game special. Again, see D44M being closer to brutal doom, with some basic fun, fast FPS action, but lacking a core gameplay loop as tight and satisfying as Doom's.
Quake already was rebooted, it's DOOM 2016.
what
>nail guns, knights, ogres, the unforgettable clang of grenades bouncing around, slipgates, and the almighty roar of the shambler.
they really need to fucking do this
I'm playing through Quake 1 for the first time (I don't know why I never played it before, I think DN3D kept me entertained enough as a kid and I missed alot of the games in the same window), and this game is fucking awesome, and I think a large part of that is down to it's oppressive atmosphere and the anachronistic combination of enemies, levels, and weapons
I can't think of another game where you fight knights, space rangers, and eldritch abominations
I think there's just little point in rebooting it since it's so similar in terms of theme to doom. The original quake games were essentially just tech demos
DOOM 2016 is closer in gameplay to Quake than it is to the original DOOM
Some guy with a tripCode posted here claiming to be from iD.
He said that next up is DOOM II and that after that Quake is happening. Quake is kind of a repurposed cancelled RAGE sequel, so it has vehicles and wasteland in it, but from the overworld you access dungeons that should resemble classic levels more.
Take this with a big grain of salt.
It's not all that close to either. At least list some reasons you think so.
Why is he using the team fortress 2 rocket launcher?
Hexen is a great choice. Blood though..
...
Its the Quake RL, which happens to be in TF2
more games need to feature voodoo
>someone actually responded to him
more games need to allow you to kick around the zombies heads like soccer balls, light people on fire with flare guns, and murder mimes.
>Wolfenstein is Cod
>Doom is a console shooter mess
>QC is bloated and full of gimmicks
nah m8, id is dead
Explosives were the shit in Blood, and probably the reason why it's a top 5 FPS.
Most FPS have lame explosives. I usually barely use grenades and such. But even simple dynamite was orgasmic in Blood.
Why reboots and sequels are so shitty? All it takes to enhance the game's strong points and eliminate the weak points. Why revamp everything, casualizing the game in the process?
Yes!
>let's make a sequel to our cult hack and slash game that is basically Quake/Half-Life in third person
>let's make it an generic sandbox open world RPG, I'm sure that will capture the feeling of the original
I've only played it twice, but on my second run I'm sure I killed >50% of enemies with some kind of explosives. I would purposefully run around to gather many of the fuckers in one place before blowing them all up.
Protip: they go down faster if you don't use explosives.
>id pls remake I'll buy it in a heartbeat
Instead of wanting a remake, once you finish Q1, play both expansion packs. Then go to Quaddicted and realize you've got twenty years of fantastic player-made maps and mods to play through.
Most fun enemies in any FPS ever. That little dance you have to do with the shotgun to dodge their grenades is the most memorable thing about Quake for me.
nobody actually likes quake as an IP
I mean that's what they were going to do with Prey 2 as well but there are tons of people still whining about that being canned to this day. Prey 1 wasn't even particularly good to begin with, definitely not as good as Rune.
>it's so similar in terms of theme to doom.
Ehhhhh. Doom is all about Hell and demons and flowing lava and shit mixed with manmade weaponry and computers and teleporters and such, with the player being an unrelenting force running through and blasting everything to bits. Quake only has the tech stuff for the first level of each episode (and doesn't appear at all in tons of custom maps), beyond that it's all about dim, dingy environments with abstract, yet clearly non-natural architecture and a variety of enemies from different settings that all somehow work together perfectly, and making the player feel like they're getting lost in this oppressive as hell environment and being cautious of what's around the next corner despite having enough weaponry to level a skyscraper. At least in Q1- Q2 relies a lot more on techbase stuff and Q3A is basically one giant ode to Heavy Metal.
It's really hard to put the difference into words, but it's definitely there.
>Most fun enemies in any FPS ever
I cant play quake 1 anymore because of the fucking ogre spam
Courtesy of /vr/.
I disagree with you.
Those grenades are slow as dirt, nigger. Get gud.
But wasn't Quake originally a mod for team fortress ?
other way around, friend
...
I remember that post and if it turns out to be real I will absolutely shit fire and piss gasoline because that sounds so fucking awful.
they're not hard, they're just gay, and they're in every fucking level on every fucking post dropping grenades on you
>half-life was a counter-strike mod
you're a gay

>demo 1.dem
i don't want bethesdazenimax to touch quake any more than it already has
just stop
>Bethesfucks have not gotten any of the games right even once.
Yeah fuck off retard, Doom 2016 is great. If you want "le classic DOOM" go play Doom 1 or 2 or one of the thousands of mods and remakes out there.
Hexen was known for taking nonlinear maps (or hubs in this case) to the extreme. As much as I would like to see a remake or 3rd sequel, It's obvious they would cut the game down to fit a more casual, impatient audience nowadays. The one thing I would like to see added however, would be that Parias, Baratus, and Daedolon actually got more weapons instead of just the three.
>games were harder back then.
>gamers today are bad at games
Ok, then explain how people today can beat Quake 1 in 11 minutes yet it takes 2 and a half hours to beat The Last of Us?
The fast forward button was broken that day.
can you buy or download quake 1 anywhere where it still has the music?
Why does it matter? It's really east to get it back in.
I loved Quake 2. It's underrated as fuck.
I liked how in Quake 2 it was humans invading an alien planet and taking out infrastructure.
>can't aim vertically
Holy fuck dude, get a modern sourceport. Use Quakespasm.
And then do what said and play the expansions. Scourge of Armagon and Dissolution of Eternity are better than the base game.
>speedrunners=your average player
The only thing that proves is how restricted the possibilities are in modern games compared to the freedom of movement of quake.
We need a proper new Hexen.
>Scourge of Armagon is better than the base game.
Arguably but acceptable, depends on what you like out of level design.
>Dissolution of Eternity is better than the base game.
Holy shit no that pack was a horrible slog of awful level after awful level.
>he doesn't know the shambler dance
Hellraid is in Development Hell, sadly.
