good taste. I also enjoyed this one.

how did they make so much technical progress in the 2000s?
I don't feel that things changed really much in the past 10 years

processing speed hadn't hit a wall yet and GPUs were invented

I think the 90s were more impressive (it was also the period when GPUs were introduced, don't know what the poster above is on about). There was only four years between Wolfenstein 3D and Quake.

Or well, dedicated graphics processing of different kinds have of course been done since many decades, but 3D accelerators in a somewhat modern sense.

>escape the castle
>next mission is a forced stealth section

I fucking love Tron 2.0

I still check the servers every now and then but it's always dead

>swastikas

how did they get away with this

Its only one level only but it was fucking dreadful.

No political correctness in the 2000s.

damn, I have good memories with this game

Four years is incredibly impressive.

...

Jesus Christ did time move slower back then or something? Imagine all the work, all the days and nights, all the levels and sprites and sounds and code, all the game releases and mods and satisfied evenings between Wolfenstein 3D and Quake? Heretic! Strife! Jesus.

I don't like 2000s shooters. It became all about dem hitscan weapons shooting equally uncreative enemies who also happen to have hitscan weapons.

What was wrong about 90s shooters where finding a rocket launcher in the first level wasn't out of place?

After playing sum Painkiller I'm hungry for some more FPS hotness that are just kill everything. Which of the Serious Sam games is the best to start with? Any similar games you can reccomend?

the remastered hd versions of the 1st and 2nd encounter

counterstrike and goldeneye started the trend of making every FPS a simulator

youtube.com/watch?v=_iKNJo0Y6c0
would've been a decent shooter if there was a way to disable mouse accel (fucking goddddd)

god, the textures in this game always looked so fucking nice. I don't know how they did it.

Don't listen to
The best versions are the "revolution" ones. The HD versions have some messed up hitboxes. For example, it's far more difficult to one hit kill kleers with the double barrel shotgun. Plus a few other issues.

even my dad loved this game

They aren't impressive in the sense they brought something new to the table, it's just that they needed to be incredibly optimized for the garbage hardware which were consumer computers. Nobody would buy Doom if it only ran on expensive workstations. Only around 1995 CPUs that could handle software rendering of complex 3d scenes were affordable enough and few years later affordable GPUs followed.

It's weirdly hard to find screenshots of this game, I think nobody emulates but still uses the console versions.

Red Orchestra Ostfront

Those are good but aren't they missing some levels cause the new engine couldn't allow for some gravity shenanigans?

Yeah this. It was like everything fell into this awful quasi-realism funk. Like they combined all the weaknesses of arcadey and tactical shooters, but with none of the strengths of either.

Anyone remember this? Classic.

the crypt level

You don't know what simulator means.

I loved it, but the static enemies are a turn off.

its because emulating them dosnt really work right

best map

the fuck you talking about
2 works fine on pcsx2 and i just recently completed future perfect on dolphin

The enemies wander around rooms and hallways, they just won't move from one to the other until they see you. That's probably because it would be almost impossible to get the jump on anyone, a key aspect to the gameplay, if they were constantly wandering around aimlessly. Instead you get random layout.

>tfw discovered Legends World database website
>tfw you realize the pc library is the superior one
Looks like I won't be upgrading my rig for a while.

That was an amazing game with crazy multiplayer. I wish i could go back and enjoy the multiplayer again..

diminishing returns
basically they started to reach level of graphics where pushing for further improvement isn't worth manhours it would take, and perfomance it would eat

>escape the castle
>fall underground
>skeleton knights??
that part was like a fever dream

The game starts with an intro of some evil axe guy getting shit on by a magic druid. Probably shouldn't have expected it to be just a boring old WW2 FPS after than.

Regardless, it was a magical experience.

I can't stand TNO's way of storytelling and how it kills pacing. \
In RTCE BJ escapes castle, kills whole town of Nazis, jump into dig site, meets zombies and kills them too, faces Nazi ninja chicks and eventually undead boss too. Grabs holy artiact and leaves, no fucks given. Just another day in the office.
In TNO you'd have cutscense full of cringy narration how bad things are, with sidekicks you never asked for, and every level would need section where you have to follow invisible QTEs to proceed or kill someone via scripted event.

>post opposite picture to the point you lied about

Yeah, it was very nice. I appreciate how the first few levels are mostly pretty mundane, you escape through a sleepy little German town and find yourself in the spooky catacombs. Was legit scary when I played it back then, I also sucked at shooting so I was always low on ammo.
>when you enter a room with a fireplace and a fire spirit comes out of it

i don't know what you mean by this but have fun user

A few years ago I was on an old FPS kick and I got real nostalgic for that old style of shooter. RTCW and Soldier of Fortune 1 really hold up as fun games.

adding details adds manhours and increases perfomance cost. Not sure what's hard to understand.

nolfrevival (dot) tk

have fun

i just installed rainbox six 3, beat the first mission and it was fun

Games back then required far less time, money, and people to produce. There are only around 15 individuals who produced Doom 1993

And it wasn't boring as fuck

Agreed. And for some reason it seemed like the guns in most games felt worse than they did in earlier games. Nobody will ever convince me that FEAR's guns feel good.

I put a ton of hours into Wolfenstein Enemy Territory in high school, pretty much all the guys in my class were playing that. Really fun objective-based teamshooter.

And then the fucking MODS and XPsave came and ruined everything.

No clue what you're talking about, sounds like something that happened after we all graduated.

are turoks pc version fun?

why did people hate tribes vengeance? i thought it was great. the campaign was silly fun too.

Every server forced you to download some addon, sometimes they worked, sometimes they didn't, most of the time they were really aggressive theme changers that ruined the main menu and hud elements. Joining servers became a pain in the ass.

But the worst thing was the XPsave feature. In the beginning this mod was not widespread, but as soon as clans used this on every server they owned and official servers died out, everyone started playing with fucking XPsave and nobody played it like it should be anymore. It became an unbalanced mess, where you always went up against overleveled assholes who already unlocked all the bonuses, instead of everyone leveling up at the start of a new game.

It used to scare the shit out of me. I was like seven or eight and i always decided to let my brother play that section despite it being my turn to play.

What a GREAT game.

they're same games, except you don't play them on N64 pad, and framerate isn't dipping into shit.
Turok 2 has plenty of gameplay improvments (like manual saves or graping edges to ease platforming pain), but these are all optional.

>Legends World database
Google search doesn't have it. What is this?

Looks cool, what game?

Soldier of Fortune 2

perfect dark
turok
007 reloaded

You'd think devs would have learned that there are few things people dislike more than a forced stealth mission in an otherwise action-oriented game.

Get yourself some bacta, soldier

Black sequel when?

I think in the early 2000s they were much prone to innovation. I remind playing the first soldier of fortune and the second and marvel at their intricate damage system, thinking that in a couple years that would have been the standard in every game where you were shooting/killing stuff. Nowadays the ghoul 2.0 engine of SoF 2 still can be ranked among the top 3 best damage systems.

Same thing applied for Splinter Cell, when I first played it in 2002 I was in awe of those sweet real time shadows, and thought that in a couple year those would be standards in just any game.

I think it took until 2010 before those were widely used by almost every game out there.

>Which of the Serious Sam games is the best to start with?
3. The actual shooting in the earlier games is actually pretty unsatisfying, despite their reputation.

was rakowice

also tfw ro2 is so much worse than ostfront but there's no hope for an ostfront revival because of muh grafics

idk why there are so few games that use humour

3 starts out slow but holy fuck when you go through that gorge in the last level, that has to be one of the top gaming moment sever.

>Games back then required far less time, money, and people to produce.
And yet they're still far better than at least 95% of current games.

posting a classic

Opinions. They did require a lot more thought to create because of the extreme limitations of the hardware though.

I've been playing a bunch of ET: Legacy lately. Not even heavily modded servers or anything, just plain old vanilla stuff in some Kraut servers. Still fun as hell even 15 years on.

What is it about old(er) FPSs that makes the controls, movement and level design all so much responsive and intuitive than modern FPSs?
I try playing a modern FPS and it feels like slog, and the game world looks like a needlessly detailed unfocused mess. Not to speak of the weird headache-inducing default FOV settings.
Even the goddamn Source engine still has better controls than all of your shitty Cryengine or Frostbite crap.

CHETO

I know that some fan made revision project were released quite recently. Have anyone tried them? I am always too paranoid to download that kind of stuff to my main pc.

god damnit, stop it

guess you tried that nowadays you'll have people screaming hurr durr racial prejudice the stereotype of the middle eastern guy selling monkeys herp derp

...

They went from focusing on speed to accuracy (rather than keeping both, meaning the midpoint was the best time), then decided to focus on consoles, which meant they lost accuracy too.
Fast-moving FPS games are horribly rare now because people just aren't used to them.
[VGS]

yeah fair point desu

yeah max level medics and artillery were really fucking annoying

is that the Warcraft 3 mod?

game?

tfw tfc memories

This guy is on point.

This was really the end of the party. Not that I believe there was ever a lot of good FPS games, but damn, the stuff from this period stinks.

Rainbow Six led to Counter Strike which led to a popularization of this realistic-but-not-really stuff.

Take a look at SOF and then SOF2. In SOF, you're damn near Quaking your way through thugs, just running and gunning. But in SOF2, the archetypal 2000s shooter, you can't hit the broad side of the barn and there's are advanced, better-than-Thief stealth mechanics which nobody gives a fuck about. You're taking cover, leaning around corners and sneaking around and taking your time in what is supposed to be a tongue-in-cheek ultraviolent blastfest. Fuck that noise man.

You know the real reason Half Life 2 was praised so much? It just wasn't shit. It was hardly a perfect game and in my opinion, HL1 was a lot better. But Half Life 2 wasn't shit in a period where we were drowning in boring faux tacticool crap.

Enybody know the one where you fight badgyes with red stripps? With winterlevels and you can drive vehickels?

Loved this game, played the MP constantly. Feels like no-one has ever heard of it nowadays.

Area 51 my dude

thanks!

I'm guessing it's legendsworld.net
