Pretty much every competitive meta in the modern age is just a race to make the game as unfun as possible in the pursuit of a safe and optimalplaystyle. Coupled with the vast majority of people in multiplayer games today expecting everybody to be completely and totally savvy.

Used to be you could go in and just start shooting people and do alright/pick up a lot of the depth as you played. These days you're gimping your team if you dont go online and do hours of research before you begin. It's fucking asinine.

A mix of both is obviously necessary and a metagame isn't going to just be absent from a online game thats even a little competitive. But there's shit where reaction time matters. Then there's trash like Pokemon multiplayer where its literally all just numbers and making sure you know everything all the relevant Pokemon can do. MOBAs and Hero Shooters also lean heavier towards meta knowledge over skillful execution than the RTS and FPS they were born from, a change for the worse.

The only time I've heard anyone reffer to a "kill" as a "pick" in-game is when saying "we need a pick off before we go for the [objective]", once it happens is a kill unless, again, used in the phrase "nice pick off".

"picks" is something I usually only hear in terms of who to kill, ie the tank is a bad pick or a good pick depending on the situation

Pick means to take a kill. Like usually a pick makes it a 5v4 which makes it easier for you to teamfight. So if you got 2 picks in something like overwatch it'd be a 4v6 making the 6 almost guarantee a win.

However a good "pick" would be a healer or tank that would have been a problem in a team fight
