We're all mature adults here, right? I think we should be able to have an intelligent discussion about this without devolving into a flame war.
Why do proponents of male toxicity in video games spew their hatred at games like Gone Home, Sunset, Everybody's Gone To The Rapture, and Firewatch, for their style of linear storytelling and gameplay, but then give Half-Life a free pass for doing essentially the same thing?
Is it just because their attention can't be held by a narrative with more complex or serious subject matter than "hurr durr aliens and splosions xD"? Are they frightened by having to face a story about the difficulties of being a Queer Woman or a POC, as opposed to a cis male who had his theoretical physics degree just handed to him without having to work for it?
If you're going to criticize linear gameplay and storytelling, at least be consistent about it.

\>Why do proponents of male toxicity in video games spew their hatred at games like Gone Home, Sunset, Everybody's Gone To The Rapture, and Firewatch, for their style of linear storytelling and gameplay, but then give Half-Life a free pass for doing essentially the same thing? Because Half-Life is a good game that does those aspects well. The others are garbage.
Andrew Campbell
The cutscene in Half-Life 2 are 20 seconds to 3 minutes, tops.
And you know, not the entire game.
Jaxon Turner
Because Half-Life is all about the gameplay and level design. It's not a story game.
Alexander Jackson
half life isnt successful for its story, its successful for how revolutionary it was as a pc game for its time
Jace Flores
Your thread is shit. Quickly Sup Forums choose your burger!
Jaxon Rogers
There's nothing intelligent about this post.

Try the topic again when you take out all the loaded questions, projection, and strawmanning.
Asher Allen
Because media exists to explore something that isn't possible in real life. Saving Earth from aliens is way more exciting than hearing some stoned lesbo juvenile mumbling.
In the end your memories is all that matter. You may remember the setting, you may remember the gameplay, because they are all extremely well done, unique and instantly recognizable among thousands of games. What will you remember from playing Tumblr turds? Potato graphics? Generic countryside? Pretentious autismos and psycho dykes?
Jackson Peterson
All of those games are shit, including Half Life.

They serve burgers in the cafe at the bottom floor of Trump Tower and they're absolutely some of the shittiest burgers I've ever had. And they sell them for $15.

Shouldn't the Trump burger come topped with the cum of BASED BLACK MEN?

And here you've made a mistake. Never mention it here. It triggers Sup Forumstards to make it less likely civilized talk. Also - you're faggot if you don't know it already.
I'll take Bernie Burger because lots of veggies!

>Male toxicity >Intelligent discussion
The fact that anyone brings in social constructs outside of that video game into a discussion is just ruining any discussion of that said game or games. First and foremost, it is a video game. It is for entertainment. If you not enjoying the story because a character is white or isn't a raging dyke is retarded. If you don't like it don't play it. If all you want is a game about lesbians being gay go watch some porn. You can get your rocks off a lot quicker. It's like watching a cooking show and being concerned about who that person has sex with. I am there for the food not for who that person fucks in their own time.
>Cis male handed a theoretical physics degree.
The fact that you think a physics degree is just handed to you because you are white is so ignorant it isn't even funny. Please take your arts degree and go somewhere else.
Luis Walker
Half-Life 2 has more moments where you're not in control of your character than Gone Home.

There's a lot to unpack here...
First, you're making an unproven assumption about the motivations and nature of people who have some kind of axe to grind over games like the ones named. They're not mechanically interchangeable with Half-Life. Mechanics are the native language of games. Second, these games aren't chastised for their linearity. They're chastised for their complete and total lack of viable mechanics. There isn't even a stable feedback loop in most walking sims. The engineering in them is staggeringly simple. Not refined or minimalist - simple. As in, a child could build something that complicated without too much trouble. I don't care if you've never read a single Readme for a map editor, I promise you that in four or five good hours of study, you could build something just as complex as Dear Esther. Third, the individual developers seem to actively court a particularly loathsome segment of the gaming press while willfully alienating large parts of the audience that might actually pay for their games. Fourth, these games are heralded as some kind of way of the future but they're little more than interactive art exhibits in practice. They don't represent gaming's past, present or future - they're a sideshow. They're a product of fundamentally misunderstanding what games are. Fifth, these games lean on their writing to a great deal, but games with much better writing also have high quality gameplay and some (particularly RPGs) integrate that writing into the core play in a solid and meaningful fashion.
Easton Fisher
Jeb burger is a waste.

You know what's worse than responding seriously to bait? Being wrong five times while doing it.
Juan Clark
Would you care to expand on that or do you not know what you're talking about?
Elijah Edwards
Half Life has actual gameplay and is interesting from a story standpoint. Gone Homo is literally just raiding an empty home only to find out a carpet muncher lives there. Also apparently it takes place in a universe where long hair and bright pink hair dye is accepted by the US military.
Samuel Nelson
But user! I thought this was a topic for mature and intellectual individuals such as myself. Who will I debate with online now?
Kayden Hughes
> raiding an empty home only to find out a carpet muncher lives there
Levi Adams
I know you don't know what you're talking about. Firstly, Gone Home shares its basic mechanic with HL2 and any FPS for that matter, which is moving around. Second, the complexity of Gone Home is not in the mechanics, but rather in the construction of its environment. Thirdly, this is just bollocks >Implying Sup Forumsirgins are the audience that would pay for Gone Home Fourth, Gone Home could not have been executed in any other medium, so it seems like the devs understood perfectly what games are. Fifth, learning the story is the core gameplay of Gone Home so it's hard to argue the story isn't integrated in the gameplay.
Kevin Nguyen

Nice bait, but no one on Sup Forums likes Half-Life 2 either.

I dont like the games you listed and Half Life 2.
tl;dr >HL1 was a major success >HL2 was highly anticipated >About a year or prior to the release >the game code was stolen by a hacker >valve lured the hacker into a fake interview and had him arrested >but could not get the code back >many people think the hacker destroyed the original HL2 game >so valve took a source engine tech demo and called it HL2 >the hype was intense >games media did not want to disappoint their audience and gave this new HL2 great reviews >people began to delude themselves into thinking that HL2 was actually a great game >it caused a huge divide in the PC community >gave birth to the pcbro >pcbros infiltrated positions of leadership[ on many videogame forums >banned people for talking bad about HL2 >the lies became big enough and infected the entire internet >only now has the lie died down and people can talk openly of how bad HL2 was
I was an admin at a now defunct videogame forum and caught my own mods doing shady shit. One of them even went on to work for valve.
Cameron Thomas
Ben Burger all the way baby
Carson Long
>>many people think the hacker destroyed the original HL2 game That's bullshit. You know you can actually play the stolen beta, right? Play with the crane on the Highway 17, shoot antlions with the shotgun and OICW, shoot the giant swarm of manhacks down. What actually happened is that Valve had some E3 demos with INCREDIBLE AI and shit that were obviously staged.
