Obviously first one, I don't mind if a series starts on the wrong foot if it picks its pieces up but if it starts good and sets a high bar for expectations then the fall will be all the more severe

isn't third objectively the smartest because you'll have one mediocre game that you could then learn from and improve the already guaranteed to be good sequel and threee

Third is objectively superior. If a game has a sequel it was likely good enough of a game to pull enough sales to justify a sequel. That means the second and third game are solid 10/10's.

The second one seems the most common variation though.
