yeah, im fucking terrible and hate horror games so the enemy encounters almost stopped me from finishing it, but the plot and the athmosphere were so fucking good that i was too hooked to drop it.this is one of those games that would definitely benefit of being even more of a "walking simulator" imo

TTP goes into much more depth about the same subject as SOMA though. they're both barebones in terms of philosophy, but SOMA hardly even explores the subject.

Also yes, Talos is good and if you liked the philosoph in SOMA you'll like there too, the writer of Talos has made a bunch of great flash games that you can play for free, try The Infinite Ocean for a pretty great philosophical musing on artificial intelligence.

SOMA is great. I liked it a lot when I played it, but it has grown on me with time even more. I only wish there was more thematic development.

Aside from TTP, The Swapper has some similar themes if you're interested, it has some very good ideas, but again, it doesn't really go very deep with them. It's still worth it though.

If you want non-western, and slightly more fantasy-influenced sci-fi, give Xenogears a try. The themes are very different, but it's one of the best sci-fi stories I've seen in a game.

SOMA is great once you take it for what it is and realize it's not so much a horror game as it is just an interactive narrative to a SciFi story.

i dont think they were trying to do some really scary game in the first place, i think they suffered from the fact that thats the onlu thing they knew how to make(and the fact that horror games sell, because of cringy ecelebs acting spooped on youtube).it wouldve been a way better game if it went full "walking simulator" mode.

hell, theres even a mode made that removes enemy aggression and its actually even creepier walking around with all the creatures just looking at you

The games' respective settings share some major elements, but they handle them entirely differently. Plus, TTP isn't concerned with issues regarding (persistence of) personal identity at all.

Pretty sure they said in an interview or wherever that they initially weren't really making it a horror game, but it just wasn't working out until they stopped fumbling arpund and went with a familiar Amnesia-like approach.
It's understandable and i don't think it would be a better game as a walking sim. "Monsters" pose an actual fail-state to make it a game and also keep you tense\attentive\on your toes. Just walking back and forth between audiologs would be a snoozefest without occasional threat.
Plus i really liked monsters there. Jiang-shi were fucking amazing and i found Jin Yoshida to be absolutely fucking terryfying, due to my personal fears i found taht last section unplayable for me and had to ask a friend to play through it for me

This War of Mine and Paper Please are some decent sims that put you in the shoes of someone you'd rather not. I'm not a fan of PP, because it lacked too much gameplay for me and felt too much like work; which may have been intended.

they have limited resources because they are "indie trash." It's more difficult to make good 3d environments when you have a smaller budget, right?
Also the 2D cutaway environment works for the type of gameplay This War of Mine and Papers Please has. It's okay to not like 2D games, but "indie trash" doesn't tell me why.
