World is fun and all but really lacks in so many areas.
>easier
>less power ups
>less music
>more recycled levels
>no inventory
>no warp whistles
>no minigames
great game but a big step down

I grew up with SMW so I'll always prefer it
SMW has Yoshi, which more than makes up for the lack of Tanuki/Frog suit if you ask me.

If you don't think the overworld theme for World isn't the most jaunty shit then get out of my life.

both are great but I definitely prefer SMB3's style of design, and I think it's physics are better too

World. Looks and sounds better, abused less in nostalgia overdose, and it didn't rely on garbage power ups.

That and the physics weren't slippy bullshit.

If you asked me a few months ago, I would've said SMW. Right now though, I'd say 3.

ALL STARS

3 every single time.
Better music, better powerups, better levels, etc.

It's less bloated you mean, it's pretty much the pinnacle of the genre, it feels really good to play, gameplay elements are elegantly designed and it is packed with exploration and secrets to discover.

I don't care. Don't reply to me ever again.

I'd say SM3 is less bloated, its level design is more concise and it usually doesn't dwell on the same concepts for too long. Both are pretty lean games, though.

A game cannot be casual. Only a player.

3 is better. I could understand someone preferring World though.

I think what helps 3 over World here is it had better power ups and shorter but more interesting level design. I think even the visuals for 3 is better. Both games should be must plays for anyone that claims to like gaming.

The last world for 3 is a pretty big difficulty spike. Besides that everything else I said here

>easier
Not an argument, the game isn't just about platforming, but also exploration and fucking around with it's mechanics.

>less power ups
Power ups have been streamlined to a more efficient design, the only loss would maybe be the hammer suit, which is just a cool thing to have and not actually that interesting mechanically speaking, ib4 "muh reddit shoes", Yoshi makes that shit redundant and is much more interesting.

>no inventory
You can hold one item in game and carry Yoshi around which synergizes well with the more streamlined power ups design, there's no need to have a hoard of items.

>no warp whistles
Literally no use for this dumb shit, you have a complex overworld with multiple routes leading everywhere.

>no minigames
No time wasters because the game itself is more then enough.

They always draw way too much from 3 and not enough from literally anything else so World

>better power ups
More =/= better.

>more interesting level design
I guess this a question of taste, SMW felt more open ended and rewarded exploration more.

A majority of answers are going to be based on nostalgia followed by bad opinions trying to back up their claim

World is better. Even its glitches are superior.

And contrarianism.

>the game isn't just about platforming, but also exploration and fucking around with it's mechanics.
>SMW felt more open ended and rewarded exploration more.

I think this is the primary determining factor of whether you prefer SMB3 or World. The former provides a more focused platforming experience while the latter has more secrets to find and reasons to revisit old levels.

Well, surely we can all agree that 3 looks much better than World, right?

2

>contrarianism
>when talking about SMB3 vs SMW
That doesn't make any sense. If we were talking about shit like Lost Levels then maybe.

I don't like 3's color palette, too washed-out and too much cyan.

No.

the great debate? thoughts?
fuck you thats what
yoshis island > any mario game

no but the All Stars version does.

World is better
>Less bullshit difficulty
>quality over quantity
>better music
>interesting level designs
>inventory was unneeded
>world skipping was always shit
>minigames were unneeded

You can say it's the best looking Classic Mario game of the NES era, for sure. But to say it's better than the game that was critically claimed as the best Mario of all time + being Nintendo's FIRST Mario for the system of the time, as a LAUNCH title? You might as well say Galaxy is better than Odyssey.

If I want to sit back, relax, and have a good time, world.
If I want something challenging, but just as fun, 3.
World has the more memorable level design IMO. I could probably draw the first two worlds' worth of levels from that game and I haven't played it in at least a year.

>no warp whistles
>LITERALLY complaining that you can't skip most of the game

World.
The epitome of videogames.

I think ultimately when it comes down to it, 3 is the better game. Going back and replaying them, you can tell that each level in 3 is tightly designed and has a lot of thought put into it.
That being said, I'll always prefer world. The graphics are charming and I love Yoshi. The controls are perfect too, the spin jump is useful and grabing items is seamless.

On a side note, I always thought SMB3 would work well with Cuphead's asthetic. If you look at the original, it almost looks like a 50's cartoon since mario's overalls are black.

SMB3 has quality and quantity over SMW. And if you honestly think the game is hard then you're just awful at videogames. I played through the game fine at age 10 and it was fun and not frustrating.

>SMW has Yoshi, which more than makes up for the lack of Tanuki/Frog suit if you ask me.
Yoshi is broken.

>no warp whistles
That's a gud thing, some levels in SM3 were murderfuckingly atrocious so it was justiffied to have some sort of way to skip the entire world altogether so you didnt have to suffer them. In SMW each level was masterfuly crafted so you would want to play it more than once to look for things you might've missed.

Mario world looks ugly as fuck. Mario Land 2's Six Golden Coins tries to copy it's art style and looks even more ugly as fuck.

>muh warp whistles
>THERE'S NO WAY TO FUCKING SKIP EVERY OTHER WORLD ANYMORE ;_;

3, world sucks

The best version

>warp whistles
>what is star road

>these colors

World.

at least are not limited

World without a doubt. Discovering all those secrets that opened up alternate paths through the world really made this my favorite game on the All Stars cartridge as a kid.
