JRPGs

Can we get a JRPG thread going?

What have you lads been playing lately? What are your favorite JRPGs? What's the best JRPG of the year so far?

>What have you lads been playing lately?
Just finished Suikoden I and I'm about to go onto II. I thought Suikoden I was really good I don't get why people always say to just play II when I is definitely worth playing
>What are your favorite JRPGs?
My favorite of all time is either FF7, Xenogears, or Persona 3
>What's the best JRPG of the year so far?
I quite liked Ys VIII but I haven't played Persona 5 yet which I think would probably be my favorite if I played it

>no Vagrant Story
Shit list

I wish you didn't use this shitty list, but sure I'm down for a JRPG thread.
I haven't played any new games but I have some older games I've yet to play through. I'm on disk 3 of panzer dragoon saga and it's just OK. Is there any neat gameplay additions that come later on? The battles are starting to get tiresome since they're simple and repetitive.

pursona 5 XD

Playing Disgaea 2 on PPSSPP rn.

It's really good

?

Been trying to find the motivation to pick up Persona 5 again but it's been a complete bore since the Kamoshida Arc. Probably around a quarter of the way through the pyramid palace atm.

Played a bit of the Octopath demo. Was pretty great. Favorite jrpg, and game in general, is twewy. I'm looking forward to Xenoblade 2, but I'm kinda worried about the VA.

>What have you lads been playing lately?
I finished Ever Oasis yesterday and started Bravely Second today.
>What are your favorite JRPGs?
Genealogy of the Holy War, SMT Nocturne, and Ys Origin
>What's the best JRPG of the year so far?
Tales of Berseria

How did this thing get so many great JRPGs?

I played P5 and loved it. Haven't played anything in the SMT series before. I hear people say that P5 isn't the best.

In what ways are the other games in the series better?

This board is for mobile and western games. Gaming innovation in Japan is dead.

>I thought Suikoden I was really good I don't get why people always say to just play II when I is definitely worth playing

Because II does everything I did only better

>tfw one of your favorite JRPGs caused so much butthurt it ended the series

>What have you lads been playing lately?
SMTIV Apocalypse and Final Fantasy IX
>What are your favorite JRPGs?
Skies of Arcadia is my favorite of all time. Digital Devil Saga and Lost Odyssey are also up there
>What's the best JRPG of the year so far?
Couldn't really give an answer, none have really gotten me excited, and I know that Persona 5 would be the go to answer but I kinda lost interest. I have high hopes for Octopath Traveler.

>What have you lads been playing lately?
Persona 1 & Vagrant story. P1 is fucking shit and I'm only finishing it for the story at this point, but vagrant story is an amazing classic

>What are your favorite JRPGs?
Xenogears, mother 3, or chrono cross

>What's the best JRPG of the year so far?
i only played p5 and it was pretty good

The SMT main games have stories with more at stake then Persona games, also fusion and demon recruitment is a lot more expansive

>Half of these games are only good if you played them years ago

user you cant recommend a newcomer something based off of nostalgia like Earthbound and FF7

Earthbound is shit anyway. Le randum XD: The Game.

Where's Ni No Kuni?

>What have you lads been playing lately?
P5 NG+
>What are your favorite JRPGs?
Suikoden II, Xenogears, FFIX
>What's the best JRPG of the year so far?
Does NIER:A count? If not P5, although we still have X2

>more at stake
huh. P5 kinda lost me when it threw in the final "lets kill God" boss, I didn't care about that shit nearly as much as I did avoiding going to jail for bullshit charges. I liked how personal a lot of the arcs were, save-the-world plots often fall flat for me because it's so large scale it becomes unrelateable.

but expanding on the fusion and recruitment sounds cool though, what's it like?

...

I bought the first Valkyria Chronicles on PS3 for no reason and I haven't touched it yet. What am I in for if I played the second game and got bored doing the shit school exercises?

Combat system belongs in the trash.

I HATED Nier Automata and I don't feel like finishing Persona. Fuck me

I decided to properly play-through all the Front Mission games tho, starting with the first one on NDS, it's ok, I'm happy as long there are mechs in any games so.

Favorite is Valkyrie Profile though. There's never going to be another one and Tri Ace is dead. Someone end me

Slowly making my way through xenogears.

I love the game so far, but damn, it's taking me forever.

Why aren't you just pirating the PC version?

What have you lads been playing lately?
Started playing Xenogears again. Didn't finish it last time, despite being at Deus. None of my other Gears were equipped enough to fight the other bosses, and I wasn't strong enough to pull of defeating him at full power. I ended up putting the game down and never coming back. I'll finish it this time.

What are your favorite JRPGs?
FFX, Persona 5, Xenoblade Chronicles

What's the best JRPG of the year so far?
Persona 5, but I feel Xenoblade 2 will be my JRPG of the year.

>Dark Cloud 2
>Dragon Quest III

ok list but could use a lil more

Rogue Galaxy is one of my favourites. It's a shame about the ending.

Most SMT games don't have you saving the world but shaping it according to your will, which tends to result in you having to kill a bunch of people who don't agree with you.

There are a lot more demons to fuse and recruit and your party is all demons that you can customize how you like (no presets like the Persona cast)

Started up Parasite Eve and i'm not really sure i wanna continue
video games don't give me a enjoyment anymore

What part of the game are you at?

only a little bit past the prologue

>What have you lads been playing lately?
Kingdom Hearts 2 on Critical for the first time along with Persona 2 Innocent Sin.

What are your favorite JRPGs?
SMTIV, DDS and Xenoblade Chronicles.

What's the best JRPG of the year so far?
I dunno, guess P5 since it's the only one I played but I thought it was pretty meh. Pre ordered Xenoblade 2 the other day so I'm excited as fuck for that.

The great debate.

It gets a little bit better moving forward and you get more variety in terms of guns.

Love it.

Unironically the best recent JRPG in years

I think my ideal world would be one where I don't have to kill people who disagree with me, but that sounds interesting.

I feel like I'd miss the team dynamics, though, if it's all just demons.

>What have you lads been playing lately?
2nd attempt of restarting Xenoblade Chronicles.

>What are your favorite JRPGs?
Lunar II, Megami Tensei II, Soul Hackers, Etrian Odyssey III, Wild Arms 3, Dawn of Ys, Xenoblade Chronicles X, too many.

What's the best JRPG of the year so far?
Only current year JRPG I played was P5.

how is digital devil saga?

I just locked in Chaos route in SMTIV but I can't be arsed to finish it.

Should I just head into Apocalypse?

>Mother 3
>-

The two games together are one of my favorite JRPGs.

Berseria is the worst game in the Tales series

Juggling MonHun stories at the moment with God Wars and Yakuza 0 (And Nioh now that the last DLC's out). Currently looking forward to 13 Sentinels since we now know it's an SRPG, and The Lost Child, since I'm a sucker for both SMT and El Shaddai.

Been a good year of Japanese games, really.

I liked it when I was playing it but I got spoiled on the big plot twist which kind of killed my motivation

I'm playing Trails in the Sky First Chapter because of the hype. So far it seems pretty generic.

First one is The Warrior with SMT Demons

Second one is Soylent Green with Demons

finish chaos and neutral
IV:A is a "what if" scenario based on the neutral route from IV

Play on an emulator with frame rate uncapped as it gets tedious and the encounter rate can be ridiculously annoying

Otherwise pretty good

>JRPG has random encounters instead of being able to see enemies in the field

Going from Persona 5 to this is a bit funky but I'm having a great time. Just beat Mr. Rattlebones.

The last JRPG I finished was the GBA port of FF2. The game gets a really bad rap, but I honestly really enjoyed it. It got to be a bit of a slog once my team got really powerful, but ultimately I never once had to stop to grind, so I have to praise the balance of the game. It was tough but not unfair.

Wait until the real story kicks in

A game that doesn't have a school setting. Go play it senpai, it's universally agreed that 1 is fantastic, 2 is disappointing, and 3 is a decent return to form.

Who is Mr. Rattlebones? Matador?

>JRPG has encounters you can see in the field
>but they're faster than you/there are so many that you can't avoid them
>might as well have had random encounters at a measured pace instead of "ugh have to clear out this area before I can explore properly"

I'd say Trails is a good example of a simple story told very well

I want to play a JRPG on my phone (aside from Romancing Saga 2). Touch screens are cancer, but are there any games in particular that are less hindered than most by emulation controls?

>What have you been playing lately
I've been on a mission to play every single FF game this year, Currently about to finish 12
>what are your favorites
Mother 3, Persona 4 Golden, and Paper mario TTYD. I know Im a basic shitter
>what's the best JRPG of the year so far
Persona 5, but I've only played it, Berseria, and the Octopath Demo

What kind of games do you like? If you don't mind random encounters (at a fairly high rate), I highly recommend the fantranslated Metal Max Returns on SNES. It's basically an open world game with a lot to find in it, and the main draw is customizing tanks that you use to fight. And you can really, really customize the shit out of them, including getting a heater/AC unit for different environments, getting em waxed so acid won't do as much damage, etc. It's awesome, I highly recommend it.

I've only played Breath of Fire IV and thought it was pretty good

Nice. I never liked skipping games, but is 2 skippable? The school setting and voice acting is really dull sometimes.

So we are ignoring the existence of Azure then I see

I didn't bother with it. BTW, 3 has a fan translation, so make sure you get that if you do decide to play it.

>What have you lads been playing lately?
Nothing actually, i downloaded SMT:Noc to emulate as my first SMT/Persona game but i am too busy with uni stuff
>What are your favorite JRPGs?
Trails series.
>What's the best JRPG of the year so far?
Trails in the Sky the 3rd so far.
2 Days and 2 years until GOTY.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've heard a lot about that game but unfortunately I'm not a fan of random encounters. In fact I often play JRPGs without fighting any random battles because my autism won't let me ruin the game with 'grinding'.
I like games where the focus is on coming up with strategies moreso than customizing a party. I play a lot of SRPGs in particular.

Oh, are you a big fan of SaGa? I've restarted RS2 so many times that I've probably put around 100 hours into it without beating it yet. That's definitely part of the fun, though, huh.

They might be able to get a localization out next year r-right?

What are some non JRPG series that you would like to see a JRPG entry for?

anyone? no?

I just hope we get another durante pc port.

I forced myself to finish PxZ1, and it left such a bad taste in my mouth, because the entire way through, it was SO DAMN CLOSE to being good. Does PxZ2 vary the missions up a bit? Or at least the stages? So many flat levels with no terrain and "kill all the enemies" as the mission in the first game.
If Demitri's in it a lot, though, I'll definitely play it. He was why I stuck it out in the first one, even though he was completely a bit role.

I like what I've played so far from the SaGa series even though it doesn't fit my usual criteria. It's nice that you get to create your own adventure as you explore and I appreciate the strategic parts of the battle systems. I try to dodge enemies in RS2 when possible but that's tough with the touch screen so I end up fighting some stuff, and it feels like the game is built around that so everything works out nicely. I just mentioned it because as far as I know it's the only good game that's only in English on smartphones.

Why do you keep restarting RS2? I think it's really well designed in that you can gather up a party suited for whatever enemy killed your previous emperor, so you can play through the game without resetting or even reloading.

The one you posted. But also this one.

Been playing this recently, love and hate it at the same time.

>enter big room
>camera shifts away
>Herakles Prostasia Herakles Herakles Prostasia

>something casts a spell on you
>long, flashy and loud missleading animation
>exclamation marks shows up 3 seconds after the spell has hit you

>90% chance to hit
>miss miss miss miss

And then there are those enemies who seem to be immune to everything and only take damage from Raging Ache.

You can fuck yourself over in the game REALLY hard. The first time, I didn't even know about magic development until my 4th or so emperor, at which point I figured it'd be harder to catch up than it was worth, so I started over. Another emperor, I took a really, REALLY bad route on the puppeteer emperor with the ship and ended up getting stuck trying to fight him with no equipment for the most part, and also without Rapid Stream available, so he fucked me until I gave up (didn't have an alternate save available, learned my lesson on that). Last time, I got to the final emperor, didn't have enough fusion magic ready, and just wasn't prepped enough (and couldn't really prep more because there's no more generations after him). Maybe I'm just being autismal about the game. I definitely love it though, replaying like this doesn't feel like a chore.

I started my first JRPG that being FF4, but cannot seem to finish it because of how boring and crap is turn-based combat, you might think i'm trolling but is there any fun jrpg without grinding or the need to spend 100h to complete it?
Persona 3 seemed godly but i got spoiled and dropped it too

Is the main issue merely taking turns, or do you just not like waiting for ATB?
Additionally, do you specifically hate the random encounters? Or can you enjoy a game that has them?

turns, waiting, having to choose what to do insted of actually doing it, and all of the previous wouldn't be that bad if random encounters were romoved, difinitely the worse mechanic, maybe jrpgs are not for me who knows, would love to try persona but got spoiled most of 3 and 4

Yeah, sounds like you mostly won't enjoy JRPGs then. There are still plenty of options with less of a focus on turns and random battles, mostly on PS3 and 4.

Hyped.

Does Golden Sun really need to on that list?

I understand the in-battle graphics look good for a GBA game... but what the hell else does it have going for it? Generic combat, generic plot... what do people see in this game?

I don't think those issues are as critical as you make them seem, maybe you're looking for a 'perfect' file but none of those situations seem particularly bad to me.
>I didn't even know about magic development until my 4th or so emperor, at which point I figured it'd be harder to catch up than it was worth, so I started over.
I think that's a reasonable time to find out about it, you can't even start fusion magic until you get lvl 15 magic anyway.
>Another emperor, I took a really, REALLY bad route on the puppeteer emperor with the ship and ended up getting stuck trying to fight him with no equipment for the most part, and also without Rapid Stream available, so he fucked me until I gave up (didn't have an alternate save available, learned my lesson on that)
Easy, you just die and then build a party with a bunch of barehanded attackers to bash his face in (or discover another route).
>Last time, I got to the final emperor, didn't have enough fusion magic ready, and just wasn't prepped enough (and couldn't really prep more because there's no more generations after him).
I'm confident that you have the tools to beat him as it is. Just make another couple attempts if you're almost at the end already, you really don't need that much prep and if you absolutely need to you can still level your skills and spark new skills. You don't need fusion magic.

People listed their favourite JRPGs and golden sun was quite popular because it's a nice looking GBA game, even if it's not particularly good. There was no discussion about quality or anything of the sort.

>If Demitri's in it a lot
yup. he's a Pair Unit leader now since Dante got Vergil as his partner
>Does PxZ2 vary the missions up a bit?
yup

Play the Ys games then they don't have turn based combat and don't have random encounters

Okay. I have played literally all of those games and I felt like while some were suspect, a plausible case could be made for all of them--except Golden Sun.

Cool to see hidden gems like Grandia and Suikoden II from the Playstation heyday getting shoutouts. Do people really prefer Lunar over its sequel?

Good shit, nice to see a jrpg thread.
>What have you lads been playing lately?
Been playing SMT: Nocturne at the moment, at the second visit to the assembly of nihlo.
>What are your favorite JRPGs?
Earthbound
Mother 3
SMT: Strange Journey
Breath of Fire IV
Metal Max Returns
>What's the best JRPG of the year so far?
I don't know, nothing this year has interested me enough to play them. I plan to buy strange journey redux just because but that probably won't come to the US until spring 2018.

Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age / Persona 5

Golden Sun is a nostalgiafag game. It's mediocre as fuck but because people played it as a kid so they forgive it.

Not a debate, BoFIV is one of the best games ever made.

I've heard that FXII is blatantly unfinished at the end is that true?

nope

I just finished a dragon quest marathon, from IV to IX.

After 500 hours and half a year of non stop Dragon Quest, i can safely say i'm autistic and need help.

Oh well, at least i'm ready for XI.

Shadow Hearts 1 and 2
Growlanser 2,3, and 4

These are really good imo. Give them a shot if you haven't.
