I'm conflicted about it. It's alright but it's kinda hard to get into. It was also a radical shift in almost every aspects of the series. It also sold like shit which supposedly prompted Capcom to axe the whole IP.
I'd rather not talk about BOF6, it has been out since last year in japan, you can check videos and make an opinion for yourself.

Nope. It's a mess of a game, has a counter that goes up and if it's full, you get a game over. Only way to the counter is to restart the entire game.

Using the dragon form, a staple of the entire series, speeds up the counter. Meaning that it's a bad thing to USE THE STAPLE OF THE ENTIRE SERIES

I personally love DQ but it's not for everyone and kind of turns the series upside down, which isn't really a bad thing, especially since it's done pretty well, my only qualm with it are the character designs, which are the worst in the series, though they do fit the game scenario extremely well.

Without the using dragon form you only reach like 50% d-counter by the end of a game which leaves you with plenty of opportunities to abuse it. It's so broken that giving it to you permanently would be retarded, Ryu is already powerful as fuck in his base form, save it for bosses.
All complains about DQ i see are from inability to at least somehow use your fucking head. DQ is godly already because it gives an actual challenge unlike any previous DQ games. That's aside from brilliant atmosphere, great OST and good combat system.

at least it doesn't speed up the game over counter and you could use items to restore MP

I liked nina as an adult

I think the first is really one I wouldn't recommend playing because it took until BoF2 to really develop identity as a series.

Fishing wasn't that bad in BoF 1

I've only played BoF 1 and 2 but it's never explicitly state throughout those games that Ryu's love interest is Nina(it's implied that Nina 1 got together with Ryu 1 in BoF 2 but not the original game itself)

But the D-counter + the fact that there's only 3 party members makes the fighting feel a bit flat. It's not like dragon form in other games meant an instant win against anything too. You can have challenge while keeping things interesting.

Good: I often hear good things about this series
Bad: The people who say good things about this series tend to also promote mediocre jrpgs like lunar, star ocean, dragon quest, etc.
So it has been on my backlog for a very long time.

Much better pacing(no retarded fetch quests for the first 10-20 hours like in BoF 2), better dragon system, better character design, less grindy, better atmosphere, "Marbl3" actually works to reduce encounters unlike "Smoke" in 2, godtier soundtrack which utterly shits on 2's etc. etc.

1 is a much better place to start than 2 especially for noobs. 2 will just alienate so many people away with it's grindy heavy nature and nothing else. It doesn't get good until after like 20 fucking hours after unlike 1 which is good from the beginning to end.

But why, when you have Momo who hits just as hard but has a great setup of support abilities and even some attack magic plus larger pool of mp?
Hell you can give her Shadowwalk which means she never misses and constantly crits.

Between lures, ability to reposition on the battlefield and actual crowd control tools there's quite a fucking lot of variation going on during the encounters.

In 3 dragon system is so broken game lets you literally auto-play itself just by going into warrior form and critting for mad damage or becoming a single giant-ass dragon instead of your entire party with insane breath damage.

Peco has better stats overall. Garr has more agi, intel and slightly more atk. The two first stats being fuck useless because Garr's spells suck and for agi, it is at a level where he'd go last no matter what.

The only one I played was BoFIII a year or so ago on a 5th gen JRPG kick.

I would say it's a pretty average JRPG, desu. Doesn't do anything particularly great but doesn't fuck too much up either. I'm sure I would think much more highly of it if I played it as a kid.

It's not in jap's tastes to openly state the affection between the characters.
In 3 she's ready to follow him to the end of the earth while defying her parents.
4 was mistranslated as in english version she states that she likes Cray while in original she meant it in brotherly sense, and in BoF4 manga her affections for Ryu are stated openly.

Get ready for an ungodly amount of random encounters and maze-like maps. Such a shame.

I'm playing 3 now. Does it ever explain what Ryu did or how he aged after the timeskip?

Kind of, but OP refers to the fact that in 3 you start with the characters as kids and you see them growing during the game, kinda like DQV.

While FF is better I would definitely say BOF is the cozier series. Everything in that game is adorable. The sound effects, the music, the UI, the battle system, the artstyle... it is a cohesive experience. Maybe even more cohesive than FF.

Breath of Fire 1 and 2 look significantly better than the butt-ugly deformed sprites in FF 4-6(don't get me started on the ugly muddy colors of FF6)

After having finally played BoFIV this year it is genuinely one of my favorite games I have ever played. I played BoFIII previously and while good it wasn't a game that resonated all that much for me. With BoFIV I was floored though. The great combat system, beautiful visuals, amazing story and cast, and unique soundtrack just amazed me. All of the symbolism seen throughout the game feels genuinely meaningful.

Well you avoided 2 which is grindy as shit and has many flaws despite what fucking faggots in the internet try to tell you about it being better than 1 which it fucking isn't...it has aged much worse than 1

Regardless if you want to play 2 grab the retranslation patch and grab patch the rom for double exp/money(to mimick the GBA port) to make it easier on yourself. Prepare for tons of fetch quests and backtracking for the fist 10-15 hours and expect a worse soundtrack than 1's...the dungeon music will drive you insane.
