You lied to me Sup Forums. You primised me a challenging game. What we got was packed with artificial difficulty far greater than anything the 80s or 90s threw at gamers. There's a lot going on onscreen most of the time. There's so much coming toward you that it's just arbitrary that the greatest danger in many fights is stuff coming from offscreen behind you completely out of nowhere. And you will lose quite enough of your meager hit points from screwing up without the game deciding it has to steal them for no reason too. If old-school hard simply means cheap, then a return to it is nothing to celebrate.
When you are lucky and manage to avoid the cheap shots, the boss fights are over usually in under 2 minutes. Once you account for all the time wasted repeating the same level 27 times, there's actually just not that much content. Certainly not enough for finally completing a level to feel like an accomplishment.

I can kind of see what OP is getting at. sometimes enemy's spawn on top of you or come from off-screen. the telegraphing is pretty fair for the most part but it isn't perfect.
as for lack of content I would agree with you. The fact of the matter is that this animation style costs a lot of time and money. you could call Cuphead style over substance but I am personally just happy that a game in this style exists.
In conclusion fuck you I'm enjoying it.
