Hi Sup Forums. I'm working on an RPG and need a good battle layout. I'm finding it difficult to make it look appealing. What should I attempt to model it after? What should I avoid?

make gay porn flash on the entire screen repeatedly so fast that it gives the players seizures

what is your game about?

I dont wanna hijack ops thread but awhile back i made basically a paper mario engine where you could walk around and everyone was flat and you could explore a world but i couldnt figure out anything about combat or even how to initiate it. i never found a good guide on creating turn based combat nor a good guide on qte combat like the mario rpgs have. this seems like the right thread to ask but again i dont want to just detract from ops question.

what engine were you using?

What's your game like/about?

A fat lousy anthropomorphic pig embarks on an adventure to take back his stolen TV from a mafia of frogs seen as the upper class of civilization. Gameplay wise it is similar to Paper Mario, featuring timed hits and low measurements of health.

>mafia frogs

lol that sounds pretty funny

Don't you basically do it like a battleship game? Just loop through a couple states until one side or the other is dead?
-pre-fight (applies passive buffs)
-randomize turn order (rng + speed)
-your turn
-enemy turn
-enemy(b) turn
And then you can loop it from the turn order thing or you could have an end of turn thing that applies healing/damage over time or you can keep track of that at the beginning/end of each combatants turns.

...

we don't even know what your game is about you horse gay porn customer
a fantasy game won't have the same tone and layout than a futuristic game

I hope you already asked yourself the question of the tone, the main color, the message and everything

so here it's "funny" and "parodic" but it's not enough, what's the kind of characters? their outfits? their personality?

from what I gathered, your main character would be a lower class, considered as a youngster trash, with the tone I would imagine a 90's hip-hop based layout, with chains, sunglasses and graffiti like words

...

You answered your own question with the pic
There's huge market demand for something to sate the appetite of people who really want more Paper Mario, just look at Stick of Truth

have him use a remote control to click through the options, shown as a thought bubble with a curly pig tail above his head

i'll accept my royalties in the form of (you)s

That's the problem though, I don't want it to look just like paper mario.

>fat lousy anthromorphic pig
Skip the RPG, make a shitty VN with Renpy and cash in on furry autism bux

Tell me what engine you're using so I can belittle and make fun of you.

I use Game Maker Studio, but I've been working with the Game Maker Language for 10 years.

unity

>game maker """language"""

ok thanks for the advice

Gungueon, Hotline Miama Underatle and Spelunky were all made with Game Maker.

*miami

...

>Gungueon
Am I supposed to know what that is?
>Hotline Miami
Before being remade in an actual game development framework
>Underatle
HAHAHAHA
>Spelunky
Not the version anyone cares about.

I could make a great painting out of feces, but at the end of the day...

Next you will tell me cuphead and hollow knight are bad because they are made in unity

...

Thanks for letting me know. Now I'll be sure to avoid them.

>frogposting
Not helping your case.

>RPG with timed hits
Oh. Well that does limit your options somewhat. The only timed hit RPGs I've seen have either been through a drawn back camera (Super Mario RPG and others) or with a 3D model which moves up and manually attacks (Legend of Dragoon). In either case, I hope your artistic skills are up to the task, because people will be spending a lot of time focusing on your character in order to get the timed hits right, and it won't go over well if the art is terrible.

Why do you want it to be "Paper Mario with pigs and frogs" outside Paper Mario being popular?

Also, note that those low numbers require some very careful consideration to work properly. In general, the tighter the number range, the harder it is to work with.

If you want your game to just be a blatant Paper Mario rip-off, then you might as well just use a menu similar to Paper Mario. No sense being subtle about it. If you're looking for something more original, then perhaps something like where you consider your protagonist and make something related to them.
