What does it matter? The idea that you have to be some hulking xbox heug monster to wear armor or use a shield is dumb.
The point is is to deflect blows away from yourself and allow you to attacks while simultaneously protecting a large chunk of your body. If you act like you're a human wall then your arm will get tired and useless within a short time.

This, monsters go to attack her, and see how smug she is, causing self doubt, and resulting in their attacks being weaker.

EO2U has considerably less of the "borderline useless class" syndrome a few of the other EO games have (namely 3). You can even get through it with a party of only medics, although the superbosses will still kick your ass.

On top of that, they were literally designed to survive in a world where there was almost no food whatsoever. I think the Sentinels, the big beastly ones, were engineered to be able to eat stuff which was fatally poisonous to humans.
Also, there were three genetically engineered races. One of them was just a hive worker race that went nuts.

The Sentinels were to make up for the laborers lost to the poison food, water, air, and landscape, and since they were made from animals in that landscape, I believe they could indeed survive in the outside world beyond the libraries.

Yeah. Sentinels were heavy lifting and bodyguards for the humans, Vessels were smartypants workers, and Hollows were drone workers.
I think some note in the Hall of Darkness hinted that the hollows might've had some level of higher intelligence though. I can't really remember.

The Hollows apparently work for different motives. It's interesting to note that the only one of the three species remaining in the libraries themselves are the Hollow Magus's within the Hall of Darkness, and the Hollows themselves are the only ones to violently turn on their compatriots (namely the Arcanists they had killed and strung the bodies up for use as bait).
I only recall a note that the Hollows have external motives.

There's literally no reason to start with the original EO I and II on the DS. Start with IV and go from there.

Runemaster is for lewd cuddling

1 and 2 will feel fairly clunky - maybe even unplayable - if you start with 3, 4 or the remakes, due to the quality of life improvements introduced over the series. They're tougher games combat-wise, but also slower, and not fully realised like the games from 3 and onwards are.

I'd echo 's recommendation. Start with EOU, play on Classic if you want the full narrative experience of the original (I'd say it's worth it, personally. The Story mode of EOU isn't all that great either.)
EO3 is worth playing too, pick it up whenever you feel like. A little dated, but you can still definitely have fun with it if you find yourself enjoying the general EO formula.
EO4 is probably the easiest of the games, and changes the formula of how the dungeons work a little bit. You can have a lot of fun creating a pretty varied team without much limit on classes due to difficulty.
EOU2 is pretty damn great. Fluid, very fleshed out and seamless mechanically-speaking, and the Story mode is defintiely well worth going through. Maybe save it for last, just because it'll make past games feel clunkier by comparison.

eo3 was my favorite, personally (although i always hated/never understood the sailing minigame.. it just seemed really pointless even after full clearing the game)
