I don't recall exactly when this started bothering me, but it recently got to the point where I can't ignore it anymore. I am talking about the word 'gameplay', which I believe is the single most useless and misleading word in game terminology. But let me explain myself before you start booing.

Consider the following sentences:

This book has good bookread.

This record has good recordlisten.

This movie has good moviewatch.

So yeah, I've just made up three new words: bookread, recordlisten and moviewatch. Now these words may sound stupid to you, but that's not all there is to it. These words are also useless. To demonstrate this I'll rewrite the above sentences without using them:

This is a good book.

This is a good record.

This is a good movie.

See where I am going with this? Just keep in mind that people have been discussing books, records and movies in the English language for a long time, without ever feeling the need to invent ghastly word-constructs like "bookread", etc.

you are retarded

Icycalm is such a sperg

Thanks, OP, I'm gonna start using the term "bookread."

This has got to be the most stupid post I have ever read.

Thats why vidya is so cool you have that interaction element between you and the game itself which is called gameplay which lets you do crazy things (dependent on the game) Like when you, press a button for example and it has a semantical meaning instead of just being syntax in nature like the interaction with any other medium except for make your own adventure books. Its really fun you should try it

This book has good readability
This record has good listen-ability
This movie has good watch-ability

shut up

this trend began when nintendo began woefully underpowering their consoles so their fans decided to make up “gameplay” and insist that nintendo games had good gameplay, whatever the fuck that meant

Interaction retard, dynamic experience

That's the difference

Books all read the same, you read them.

How you experience games vary on the... Gameplay.

How important is bookread vs. typeface? Do you prefer it when a book has an emphasis on bookread, or do you prefer next-gen typefaces?

Would you say the OP has bad postread?

I feel you don't always have to sacrifice one to get the other, but I prefer typeface.

Gameplay is a word that's used to describe a certain aspect of a game and its use is so widespread that it serves its purpose. You could argue that it's vague (combat? interactive dialogue? inventory management? exploration?), but it's not useless or misleading.

a good game doesn't necessitate good gameplay, nor does good gameplay necessitate a good game
it's a perfectly valid criteria to assess individually

Yeah, I probably would if I were to be hit in the head with a brick a few times and then huff pain thinner.

Did you hit your head, OP?
Do you need an ambulance?

Ok but. All those mediums are not interactive. You read a book or watch movies the same way no matter the genre. Two games could have different gameplay even if their story shares a genre. Games have genre and gameplay. You're retarded.

What about mouthfeel?

Pretentious journos are ashamed of talking about play, but it's the element that makes games special.

...

Manipulation of the medium through by the authot given means that can be extended through third parties or others consisting of two elements. Physical (peripheral) and nonphysical (interaction between player input which is ensued through given ingame tools, with the gameworld).

Is this about the whole polygon and rock paper shotgun meme OP? Cause if it isn't then you're just retarded.

within*

you have bad brainthink

makes no sense, re-read the article and rephrase it

>yeah it was a really good book the visuals were amazing
>wait are you talking about a movie?
>REEEEE YOU FUCKING RACIST WHAT THE FUCK WHAT THE FUCK WHAT THE FUCK

lol

it's that meme, ironic shitposting is still shitposting however

Jesus Christ this so stupid and nonsensical, a complete misunderstanding of the meaning of words, I really hope this is troll pasta and not a legitimate opinion.
The double spacing makes me think it's intentional shitposting.

not my fault your brain is to smol to process simple, applicable information. Why dont you rephrase it if you so clever

>A good game doesn't need good gameplay
Oh boy that's very low quality bait user, work on it before posting here again ok?

>polygon writes that 'gameplay' is a bad word, because nobody there can play
>OP works for polygon

Yes OP, we knew you we're a faggot, but you're taking it too far.

Is alpha protocol a good game

As an amateur homebrewer this one actually bothers me

Everything you listed there has more components than that.

A book can have an interesting story but still be bad because it's written poorly or waffles on too long

A record can have good music but be bad because it's a genre you don't like, or has it only in short amounts. Or maybe it has other good qualities yet you still don't like it

A movie could have a good plot but look like garbage, have bad actors who undermine it, and so on

Unlike these mediums, games are interactive. You can see the term gameplay as a replacement for "interactivity" if you want.

"This game has good interactivity but the story is bad."

Most importantly, language evolves. You say "gameplay" to anyone and they know what it means, thus making it a valid word. It's just a word you don't like.

Because theres an interactive aspect to video games the others lack you fucking idiot.
