What are some of the worst localizations in video games?
What are some of the worst localizations in video games?
never forget
*completely rewrites your dialogue*
*completely alters main character's personality from "bored, jaded immortal" to "cunt thundering turbo-bitch"
This entire game
any m rated game in Germany, period
...
that's some fucking gamergate reddit cringe formatting right there
Oh jezz! is that what happened to Lightning and why she is loved in Japan? Or at least her creator?
I'm retarded and spent a minute looking for the differences in the pictures.
But the 4kids dub is an example of a perfect localization improving on the source material in every way.
sad part is, everyone suffered in one or more ways
The shit the cast say in XIII games is actually quite different in Japanese than in English.
Wait, I thought it's only European version that got censored.
Look up "Gaijinworks" and "Working Designs"
I kinda like Ess Tee Dee. It's catchy.
i find it hard to believe someone would name a character "STD"
Esty "STD" Dee
A compelling case for arson
Couldn't find the one where Justin wonders what coffee tastes like.
Interestingly enough, they kept all the naughty bits in the game. Even Feena's panties. Beer though? Hell, no.
Europoors got the butt.
But not mentions of "boing boings".
Esty "BLACKED" Dee
Ah, that's right. Cracks me up every time that last one.
Magic Knight Rayearth was the first time I was playing a game and realized that a company had intentionally completely changed it with their localization. It wasn't even just a matter of trying to insert jokes meant to make 12 year-olds giggle.
This was just bad translation and voice acting.
Yes, but to a lesser extent. JP Lightning and English Lightning are the same kind of difference as JP and EN Zero, just less extreme.
I prefer these though
I don't want to feel like the dev's trying to rope me in by my dick. I want a game to be good. Also the clothed design looks better, and that boing boing writing is atrocious (not that the writing's ever been good...).
The censorship only makes it lewder.
Because Japanese translated literally can be clunky as fuck, which is why translators usually abridge the dialogue to make it sound better. I don't blame them, I've seen raw nip dialogue before and it can be pretty dull or just plain weird if you don't understand the context behind it properly.
Not good enough for the weebs though
2B seems to have been changed quite a bit in a similar fashion.
People paid for beach bonus dlc you dingus.
Nigger,
That is not "abridging" the dialogue.
The American outfit is indeed adorable, but at that point in the story the character is being pressured into doing bikini photoshoots and is trying to overcome her embarrassment about showing off her figure.
The outfit is completely at odds with the scenario it is presented in.
Changing a name from Erhard to Dee just to make a fucking STD joke is retarded. Weeb or not.
okay that is stupid then
The entire point of the scene was that she didn't want to be in skimpy clothing. Shit, one of the main things about TMS was showing how ugly the idol industry is.
So, was the translator trying to make a certain statement with her name? The similarity to STD id way to close.
>I don't want to feel like the dev's trying to rope me in by my dick.
There's a TV game show in Japan where karaoke singers are having a handjob while they try to perform as best as they could. It's part of their humor.
Besides, where ever there's tits and ass mentioned, it's not meant to be arousing. Welcome to Finland. You would love to be kicked out from a public sauna with your raging virgin boner.
It's fine if it's dull or the jokes are dumb. That's the fault of the original game. The vast majority of translators can't make up a good joke to replace it with, so it would be better to just make it accurate and have the humor fail on it's own. From one of the above examples, not one more person bought Magic Knight Rayearth because they included a Beavis and Butthead joke.
Bad writing is bad writing and no, it's not some special humour. It's just bad.
here is how it works
Europe: no violence (see german c&c generals for hilarious results)
USA: no sex
I've been told these "localizations" are "good" and "funny".
youtube.com
"If you can't pay the cash, then you're out with the trash."
What the fuck
Too be fair, I always had the impression Justin was incredibly young, like 13 or something, so not giving him beer makes sense.
>boing boing
WAHOO
>I don't get this country's culture, so it's just bad!
Umm, wow, racist much?
>it's bad because I don't like it
fuck off child-brain
Alcohol consumption by minors usually gets you a T rating from the ESRB. Grandia wanted, and got, an E rating by making some of those changes. Sexual content usually has to be graphic in visuals or description before it gets you bumped up to T or even M, assuming your game doesn't already have some profanity or graphic violence already.
...
Probably because of this.
Glavenus and Astalos
You're right, I hate Nips. Disgusting little creatures.
I don't like it because it's bad.
that entire japan dialogue is engrish as fuck and silence makes more sense in context
This is good though, keep that stupid shit out of Fire Emblem. You horny teenagers ruined the series.
Anything by NISA
Eat a fucking dick shill I don't care if this is bait you need to die for saying shit that stupid even when you don't believe it.
>a rough unfinished fan translation is engrish as fuck
Wow stop the fucking presses we should just remove all the dialogue from the game because the only possible alternative is an unfinished translation patch made by fans
Your series was dying old man, should've hoped that it died there and everything was fan translated
Quality stuff.
Die in a fire, this shit was locked behind paid DLC. Yeah maybe it should or shouldn't be in Fire Emblem but it's there, and taking away what people fucking paid you for is scum tactics.
>silence makes more sense in context
>all their conversations are based on the first one
Japan is pretty strict about depictions in media of minors drinking (or smoking) themselves. They do jokes about "juice" when it does appear.
>392458141
What is even the fucking point of changing minor shit like this other than hurr durr STD? They do this shit with Fire Emblem too
>People uncomfortable with their sexuality and in favor of censorship are racists sociopaths
Sounds about right.
i am neither of those anons but nice argument
i bet you're brazillian
>Shit, one of the main things about TMS was showing how ugly the idol industry is.
You people are so wrong it hurts. This is how dumb shit spreads. The scene had NOTHING to do with skimpy clothes being an issue, and the story never had anything to do with showing off any "ugliness" in the idol industry. Fuck, play the game before shooting your mouths off.
what confuses me about the Tharja and Nowi scramble conversations is that it's sn extension of their supports in the base game. If I recall correctly they talk about Tharja's tits there, why not the DLC?
Just because hurr durr STD. NISA is one of those companies with absolutely zero respect for the source material who just does whatever the fuck they want because they know weeaboos will just eat it up and defend them because "it's better than nothing".
They machine translated Ys VIII and botched the PC port of it so hard that it couldn't even run properly on a GTX1080 and an i5 at lowest settings even though the game was made for fucking Vita and was only ported to PS4 later, and now the PC release has been delayed indefinitely. People still defended them for it because this is apparently "better than nothing".
It was rated for 11+ here in Europe though.
Have people forgotten the "KOWASHITAI!" ?
>some minor costume edits with exactly ONE line changed in the script is "4kids" tier
Whatever you say. The game was 9/10 in both versions and told an identical story.
Cockfuckingniggerfaggot
Same here. I didn't realize it was a name change.
>30 something year old woman dies of old age in prison
Disregard OP, post best localized games.
They redid an entire scene and even revoiced all the lines in Japanese and English because they rewrote the entire dungeon
Game was crap idoltrash. Possibly the worst execution of a crossover of all time.
>finish men aren't aroused by naked women
i find this hard to believe
oh my gosh
>The game was 9/10
Nah. You're really better off playing an actual SMT, Persona, or FE entry.
>Dinovaldo and Raizekusu
>Raizekusu literally means something like thundersect
Why do I get the feeling japanese is full of this shit if you can actually understand it?
Does this look liek teh face of mercy?
At the time, the ESRB didn't have the E10+ rating. They had just abandoned to old K-A (kid to adult) rating in favor of E the year before Grandia released. Had the E10+ rating existed at the time, Grandia would probably have received it.
>They redid an entire scene
No, they didn't. They voiceover change was literally for the one changed line (a joke about her changed outfit) and to modify their ages (a stupid change).
>because they rewrote the entire dungeon
No, they didn't. Not even a little bit.
Already played them all (except if...). The game is an excellent crossover.
Cant see the difference
>that English dub
I have no idea how people could play this game before the free Jap dub DLC came available.
BRING THAT SHIT KAZUMA
This might seem alien to you but in most cultures simple nudity isn't scandalous or titillating at all, it's an everyday occurrence.
Not everyone is an autist, I suppose.
Wait is Europe getting this too? I don't play these kinds of games, but the only cunt that censors vidya is germany and only overly violent stuff or swastikas, the rest don't give a shit. Or are they simple translating the already cut burger versions?
>The game is an excellent crossover
It's a failure as a crossover. It should have been standalone.
No you stupid nigger, the entire dugneon about Tsubasa doing gravure was entirely changed and rewritten.
This. The localization problems were just beating a dead horse to me.
any NISA game (memes lmao)
any 8-4 game (white blood looks too much like semen lmao)
any atlus USA game (let's change honorifics to different honorifics lmao)
Nigger, there is literally a dungeon based on a gravure model photographer and Tsubasa overcoming her embarrassment.
>Except if
Assuming you didn't forget to mention it does this mean you got to play NINE?
Fire Emblem has more issues than this, but it's still sad to see.
Too bad IntSys isn't even a half-decent developer, maybe then there would've been something to ruin
No it means he's played every Persona game and doesn't actually know what SMT is
Don't ever reply to me again.
Copypasted for you:
Demons are mirages, all based off either monsters, classes, and characters from FE, or stuff from the entertainment industry (a fair amount of movie references, like a creepy clown enemy called Nicklewise). Even your companion FE heroes are mirages. You can fuse them with enemy mirages and notMaca to power them up and change the skills you inherit from them. Battle system is straight SMT, with a very heavy focus on team building which is prevalent in both series. The game also takes place in Tokyo, and the Idolasphere (other world) has a themed heavily on both the occult and digital themes, ala digital devil monogatari. "Demon" negotiation is also included in the Arena, and as usual is a risk of health, money, and items for a chance to get fusion fodder.
Weapon triangle, 80% of the enemies being FE classes, all named villains being FE characters, character and enemy classes being right out of FE, most weapons being straight from FE, level ups being random rolls FE-style, heavy focus on setting up the proper team and exploiting weaknesses, FE characters literally all over the place, FE music and sound effects, FE-style reclassing. There is also the Arena, which is a massive version the the arenas in FE, complete with gambling money on increasingly tough fights for more money, exp, and prizes. The character side stories are also formatted as FE-style relationship rankings).
And that is not mentioning all the little name drops and other little references.
Incorrect. The only change was gravure changing to normal modeling. Every single story aspect was the exact same, from her inability to work with the photographer, to her realizing that modeling is not something she can afford to be self conscious about because the camera man sees his job as an art and is just as passionate about it as she is about singing.
