>journalists and casuals find it too difficult >insist that the game should be easier instead of putting in the time to learn how to play >will probably start writing articles about how the difficulty is a poor design choice
Why do people think that gameplay should be put to the side just so they can enjoy the visuals? Has all those cinematic hand holding games ruined people's appreciation for some good gameplay?
>Has all those cinematic hand holding games ruined people's appreciation for some good gameplay?
Journalists and casuals never appreciated those, they only started playing video games when they dumbed them down to eye candy and press X to awesome gameplay.
Henry Jackson
I’ll be honest, I’ve died a lot in this game so far. But I like it because I’m going to get better and eventually beat it. That’s why vidya is fun to me I just don’t get these fucking whiners
Aiden Diaz
it's pretty sad that we have these passionless journalists who want to call everything they find difficult the "dark souls" of whatever genre they're playing and use that as an excuse for being shit at the game.

everyone can play a cool looking game that plays like its for braindead retards, this is why games like destiny 2 exists and has critical acclaim and massive sales, people play it to feel cool and hang out with friends, they dont actually have any understanding of how good the gameplay is or if it challenges them
games that are some what harder are very literal casual filters that seperates people who actually enjoy game play vs people that just falls for all the glitz and glam marketing bull shit
Oliver Wilson

>job involves shitting out a clickbait opinion as fast as possible >suprised when they shit out a clickbait opinion fast as possible
A genuinely helpful writeup on the pros and cons of a video game takes more time and effort than these hacks care for in any capacity, much less for a hobby they likely don't actually give a fuck about. It's not hard to figure out.

Reminder: >Reason for disconnect b/w journalists v gamers is: >Journalists often see games as a stepping stone to other things >So they often out themselves as frauds when they try to review them >And they often insist on playing them as quickly as possible, on the easiest difficulty to get it done with

all things considered dark souls is the trend setter of a whole new rpg action genre and responsible for revitalization and innovation of difficulty in modern high budget games
Daniel James
I'd say it's the fairer comparison since they are the clear inspiration for the game.
Sebastian Miller
>Strawman argument and simplistic thinking. >Implying difficulty is seen as just a Spartan trial Oh bother.
Andrew Diaz
instant gratification has been a part of mainstream gamedesign for over a decade now, people are conditioned to like boring games and dismiss challenging ones.
It also tells a lot about our society in general, thats why so many people think quotas for minorities are a good thing.
Lucas Perry
Holy shit this "exclusion" meme pisses me off. These enitiled fucks don't realize that game difficulty doesn't exclude anyone save for people with severe disabilities that literally can't play the game. These whiners complain about difficulty when people like kirirko402 play sc2 WITH NO FUCKING HANDS.
The Git Gud dark souls meme wasn't about pushing people out of the community, "git gud" means you need to stop blamimg your failures on the game and just keep trying because you CAN beat it if you just put the fucking effort in.
Wyatt Cruz

That's objectively wrong, since high budget modern games are still easy.

Im a college student who has managed to put 4 hours into cuphead since I bought it on Sunday and even I managed to beat the first world. The fucking flower gave me some trouble but seriously, the only thing that is difficult about this game is the default contols. People who get so mad at videogames that they rage quit lack discipline. Stop acting like a fucking baby who gets frusterated when musical chairs doesnt go your way.
Luke Wilson

I thought the idea of videogames was that: when you first boot up the game, you're too shit to beat it but over time you get more skilled and knowledgable and eventually are able to beat it and that personal growth is what makes vidya fun Isn't that how it works? Thought that was how it works. guess not.
Isaac Bennett
How is Cuphead actually doing beyond Sup Forums anyway? It's obviously popular here but is it going to turn a profit overall?
Noah Brooks
depending on how the difficulty is implemented, youll have to play a certain way to overcome that difficulty, i.e. carefully or skillfully. compare this to skyrim which is left click to win
Isaac White
Yes.
Jose Anderson
nope you start it and its easy, then it gets easier as you unlock stuff that gives you extra powers, more health etc...
you dont play to get better you just watch your Avatar get better.

You have to accept that you are old. The majority of people playing games and involved in the industry today weren't even alive to play golden age titles. They never knew of such mechanics before Souls became main stream.

Considering the speedrunning autists got interested in it, I'd say it's going to be fairly successful. Not only that but it's a solid game with a weird art style. It's like touhou light and honestly it's refreshing to play another platformer like this. The asshurt from journalists is just the icing on the cake.
Owen Jackson
i meant the possibility of some of them being difficult because dark souls showed that theres a market out there that enjoys more challenging games than baby difficulty, i didnt mean like dark souls revolutioned the entire industry so that every high budget game is hard
Aiden White
I think this is mostly coming from irrelevant blogs getting spammed here and that one guy who should never be allowed to publish a review ever again. They give an easy mode that lets you learn the non-last phases and still unlocks the map as well as an item you can get right away for extra life. The first world (or at least the initial bosses) is also so easy that it borders on wasted potential to bring you up to speed and how things work.
Any more concussions and there could have been serious damage to the satisfaction of progressing, which is the whole point you play the game.
Jayden Campbell
>its a waste of time if it isn't instant gratification

Be honest Sup Forums, is the game actually hard? I haven't played it yet, but it doesn't look harder than your average shmup or old NES platformer.
Daniel Reyes
Where does this type of argument even come from? When I was going to uni full time, I worked 2 jobs, went to the gym twice a week and STILL had time for vidya. Isn't basic time management for hobbies something that everyone should know?
Mason Bennett
and why isnt it "fun" to hone your skills and be challenged? Whats fun about being treated like a toddler?
Nah, it's got a pretty good balance of difficulty. Harder than average, but not impossibly so. No big jumps. Hardest part was fishing for parries on certain bosses
Carter Wright
Wait, i'm retarded it's 1/2
Nicholas Diaz
A lot of people seem to view video games as literally movies that you play. So when they're unable to get to past a part of the game, they feel like they're missing out and blame the developer for not letting them see the whole game.
Carson Flores
It isn't.
Aiden Barnes
The game is challenging at points, and ramps it up a bit on expert difficulty, but it's nothing that bad. I'd argue that the classic megaman games are harder and if you've played touhou you won't have any problem with the airplane bosses.
Ayden Perez
>implying you played 2hu you'll be fine if not you'll be fine
Carter Brown
I'm happy at least that Cuphead didn't pussy out and made it so you had to beat the regular game rather than having casuals go through the game on Simple.
It would've been a damn shame if casuals could just breeze through the game and claim it's not that bad. This way they either have to get good or admit they're shit.
Daniel Rodriguez
Your hitbox on the airplane is quite a lot larger than your hitbox in 2hu though. What would be counted as a graze in 2hu takes a hit off you in the Salt & Sanctuary of platforming action games.
Evan Anderson
Is it ok to be aroused by Hilda Berg or am I just a degenerate

But the portal is moving, not the box. The velocity of matter doesn't change going through portals, so it would just plop out, right?

Ok kids , gather round , I am going to tell you about a dark time. It was 1989 and nobody has the internet, you only have ONE console and a handful of games. There was no internet to lookup walkthrus of your favorite game , sometimes you sat stuck for days , trying to find something you walked past 37 fucking times , sometimes a friend or sibling would teach you a trick and you get 30 lives and see parts of the game you would of never made it too otherwise. You played those damn handful of games over and over and over and most of them you likely never even beat Now if there isn't instant gratification or the feeling of constantly moving forward in a game , heaven forbid anyone should have to learn any game mechanics to see the game they paid $60
Benjamin Butler
It's easier to pacifist that level than to get through it normally
Chase Diaz
This I work 40 hours a week minimum, lift weights every other day and I beat Persona 5 the week it came out. These people do not like video games.

Angel Torres
Nah, Cup Souls is the Cabin in the Woods of MOBA mobage
Juan Torres
I bet you think Alien Isolation was just hard too
Asher Jones
Nah, there is no preferred frame of reference. The box and the portal are moving towards eachother and that's what matters. They're moving towatds eachother and the velocity has to be maintained (except portals exist) so when the box goes through the portal the box will see the portal and everything else continue to fly away from it at the speed thet were coming at it, while we and the platform will see the box continue to travel away from the portal at the speed it entered.
Because we're moving in the same direction and velocity of the box we think it's not moving but the portal sees the box flying at it and us moving just as fast in the same direction.
Nathaniel Evans
DaS series is as popular as it is because it's the only actuve non-casual ip that's on a AAA budget.
Jackson Price
I wonder how these people approach things like playing a song or painting, both of these hobbies require skill, time and dedication, but you don't see anyone bitching about them, why should vidya be treated in a different manner? I don't expect someone to be amazing at games when they barely play them, just as I don't expect someone to be able to create a good drawing when they haven't dedicated any serious time to drawing.
Brody Cruz
Thank god
Isaiah Stewart
What's wrong with playing the same game in short bursts for a month? If that person finished/quit a game they'd just pick another one up to occupy that time slot. So what's the difference except that he wants to check off one meaningless conquest after another instead of overcoming a very basic challenge. I've never understood why these people play video games
Zachary Green
you can play games, but not spend that measly amount getting good at games especially when its something perceived as very hard like cuphead
i have to spend like 30 minutes in training mode warming up for fighting games before i actually try to get into a match, and before i even attempt online i have to spend hours figuring out what my character can do in certain situations and figuring out optimal combos
i mean sure they can spend 30 minutes a day trying to beat 1 level in cup head and it might take them a week to actually beat that level, or they can buy destiny or some shit and beat the whole game in half that time and look that some fancy cutscenes and feel like they had fun
im not defending them, they set bad trends for games, but theres a logical explaination to their behavior
Carson Hernandez
The box is moving with respect to -itself-, if you make it so the box can see itself through the portals. That's gotta break all sorts of conservations.
Kevin Morgan
Because you're a dinosaur. 2017 is the current year and Dark Souls is the benchmark for literally everything. >First RPG >First platformer >First use of a controller specifically meant for video games >First game that didn't have to be played on channel 3 >First use of both swords and projectiles >Inspired the lock-on system from Ocarina of Time >Inspired Dungeons and Dragons And I'm kind of sick of coming up with stuff but you get the point.
Samuel Turner
Correcting typo in we're moving in the same direction and speed of the platform* mistyped there.
Jacob Watson
By that same argument why read a long book instead of one written for children? If I only read for 30 minutes a day it will take me months to finish an 800 page novel. But if I read Pretty Kitty Takes a Bath I can finish it in just a few sittings and then move on to the next one. If it's an experience you enjoy, even especially one you struggle with, wouldn't prolonging the amount of time you get with it be a GOOD thing? These people don't like video games.
David Ross
Yeah the real answer would be that portals just can't work, but i'm assuming the universe will behave consistently whenever it can.

I think one of the reasons some "gaming journalists" get so annoyed with difficulty is that they don't want to have to deal with obstacles. With the average AAA cinematic experience, you can just pick up and play the whole thing and have a very smooth nonthreatening time. There might be a couple hiccups but generally they won't have to worry about interruptions. Whereas games like Cuphead are all ABOUT obstacles, the game won't let you pass until you understand each and every boss and defeat them. To those journalists that's a complete waste of time. They see playing games as a job so it's frustrating to them when they can't get the job done in a smooth and timely manner.
It's not merely that they're casual, it's that they have specifically designed their careers around consuming media as fast as possible and churning out their opinion/analysis as fast as possible. Any roadblocks to that process will immediately be met with hostility.
