Anyone can name a game that aged poorly. What are some older games that have become better in the context of our current gaming climate?
Games that aged like wine

NetHack.
Iunno about one that holds up based on gaming climate, but Crash Team Racing still handles like a dream.
Games don't age. They stay the same.
When wine ages it turns into vinegar.
You fucking Americans don't even know wine if it shit in your mouth, You actually drink vinegar and think it's wine?
Blood and Wine
melee
it is, alchemically speaking. maybe don't show how misundereducated you are when you try to sound smart
>American trying to sound smart
get a load of this faggot. Go back to your lard fatass.
NetHack didn't age at all, it's in its own time capsule.
I still have loads of fun playing through this game.
Mount and Blade: Warband. Explicitly because the mods have actually made a far superior experience to the original. Nativefags are literally liars.
Temple of Apshai
This game innovated and refined the JRPG in a lot of ways that still aren't common practice today, it has a unique and interesting style, it takes better advantage of its hardware than any other game I've ever seen, Squenix has turned to shit since it released, and it still has an incredibly fun, original gameplay system that no one has even tried to emulate
No
God, wine sucks. Fuck the pretentious fagboys that like it
Jrpg is not a genre.
I mean more in the spirit of the question: I think that NetHack's depth and attention to detail more favorably compares to games today than its contemporaries. Little things like reading a scroll of amnesia while named Maud, or dipping a potion into itself.
I feel like little details and responses to player input like that aren't put in as often, although that's almost certainly due to increasing scope (especially graphics, etc.) and NetHack's long development history and response to user feedback.
Similarly, there's a good GDC talk by Dave Lebling where he mentions adding things in after seeing how other users played Zork.

ok lol keep thinking they're different, but you won't convince me. fool me once, shame on you. you can't get fooled again.
MGS2
This right here tbqhwy famalam.
...
Disciples 2
JRPG is a collection of tropes and shared features, and it refined them. No random encounters, dynamic difficulty and leveling that can boost drop rates, etc.
...
>hurr durr don't like the thing i dislike
TETRIS
Banjo-Kazooie aged like milk.
Tooie aged like fine wine.
with the way the world has progressed and how Kojima got basically everything right, this is an objectively correct answer. [Spoiler]Solidus did nothing wrong, he was the hero
Agree. I dream of the day that modern games get on the level of NetHack in terms of how the mechanics logically link together.
Original Deus Ex is probably the closest I've seen but still far off.
Third Strike and Super metroid still look good and play great
Third Strike. Play it after SFV and you'll see how much old fighting games were better.
Far Cry 2
Kirby Air Ride
DKC2. That fucking soundtrack just never stops being phenomenal and the gameplay is just rock solid.
"JRPG" means literally nothing, and it never has.
I thought so too, you have to get a bottle that costs more than $12. So either it sucks or you have to pay a little extra.
No it doesn't - I actually replayed recently the game and it aged not well... aged worse than HL1. It relies way too much on enviroment tricks. I felt slightly like playing Hard Reset with once in the moon fast enemies. Only really good thing is a story and that part aged well.
F-Zero X still kicks ass
1 holds up great.
>alchemically speaking
kek
vinegar restores stamina
You're right, it's still a piece of shit even today.
It's okay user you can't have good taste in everything you're only human
It means a game with relatively prominent RPG elements that was made in japan, you moron. It's an accepted term, and I specifically mentioned two aspects common to the majority of games that the term refers to. Sorry you have an autistic defiance against commonly accepted video game parlance, but that's your own problem, and I defined it in the terms of my original use of it. Take your pointless crusade elsewhere
Super Mario World
If having bad taste means not liking a repetitive and poorly designed piece of shit like Far Cry 2 then I'm glad to have bad taste.
Star Fox 64
>jrpg
>no random encounters
que
drakengard 1.
That was one of its refinements, not the JRPG standard. Try to keep up. It eliminated the need for random encounters. It let you choose when to fight, but it also had hostile mobs that would try to provoke a battle with you, if you weren't quick enough in the battle select screen.
Any sprite instead of 3d based game.
Dark Messiah
I played the demo on PC as a kid, played the neutered Elements 360 port as a teenager, and today, finished the full PC version for the first time.
It was exactly as I remember it, even better now that I can duck and weave and ninja my way through everything. The combat is still the gold standard of hack and slash, and it's so fucking simple.
You can even see the remnants of it in Arkan's Dishonoured games, granted the game heavily discourages you from combat so it tends to go unnoticed, but you've all seen that one high chaos speedrun video, you know how insane that combat could be.
Imagine a Dark Messiah sequel.
Metal Gear Solid 2 went from 'lol the gay one where you play as Raiden that doesn't make sense?' to 'the sheer work of videogaming brilliance that predicted the modern social and political climate of the internet 8 years before shit it started talking about actually happened'
MGS2 is the biggest example of fanboys being fucking morons with their kneejerk reactions.
Kojima literally just read a bunch of dystopian novels and mashed the general ideas into the game. He didn't get anything right.
>alchemically
Alchemy? Wow.
Exposure to oxygen causes it to turn to vinegar you dunce. Which is why you in fact do age wine.
I've never played it. How did it do what you are asserting it did?
counterstrike
god, mgs2 fags a sh2 fags are unbearable
Which girl did you go with, user?
Succubus lady best girl.
Clearly you weren't around in the days where games speed were directly tied to CPU speed, and games became unplayable because the CPU was too fast.
Sort of cheating since it's practically the epitome of 2D graphics and it got an HD remake, but the original still holds up extremely well.
Xana all the way.
Funny thing was I was originally going goody two shoes, because those holy weapons are fucking rad, so I exorcised her, and was reminded of how much of a piece of shit it made you feel while Xana spiritually burned to death.
So I reloaded, and went with the usurp ending, fuck that prissy titty bitch, her outfit makes no sense.
Toward the end of the game, it's revealed that an AI created by the US government wants to censor the internet, both to protect government secrets in an age where information travels instantly and spreads infinitely, and to mold society into a more productive, less wasteful one.
They even talk about social media networking sites and describe them perfectly how they would be years down the line. People just sticking close to bubbles that reflect their own ideas back at them and reinforce them, as well as the internet being used for a nonstop stream of random timewasting bullshit stories.
The first major government internet leak would be about 8 years after the game came out, Facebook wouldn't gain traction until around 6 years after the fact. At the time the game came out cereal boxes still came with hours of AOL time and scientists and cultural studies still believed the internet would elevate humanity to new levels of learning.
So yeah, absolutely fucking nobody understood what MGS2 was about when it came out.
The first uncharted game
>inb4 uncharted sucks
regardless of your feelings for the series there is no better example of how video games aren't like fine wine
...
lmao keep chugging your French poser wine, everyone knows that the one thing California is good for is making superior wine
neverwinter nights
perfect example of translating pen and paper mechanics into a video game and the game got better with every expansion.
I think you got those two switched around.
>So yeah, absolutely fucking nobody understood what MGS2 was about when it came out.
this is literally what MGS2 babies believe
Heroes of Might and Magic 3
Show me any reviewer or forum praising MGS2's story for its social commentary and future predicting before 2007.
Cheeki breeki.
Tetris
Metal gear solid
Objectively the best street fighter.
>(Released 15/03/2002 -- Last update 12/05/2004)
just accept you're a brainlet user
I don't know. I picked up Metroid Fusion and decided to play it through again.
I fucking love this game.
even though it's older it feels and plays great
Street Fighter 3 third strike continues to be unbelievably amazing.
Almost everyone caught the Information manipulation and the reason it isn't in any fucking reviews is because nobody spoils a MAIN PLOT POINT is a review. I can't believe you faggots really think the game is that deep. Its a good game it its a nice change from the generic "hero vs. big bad", but thinking its some revolutionary story telling technique is beyond retarded. Kojima just expanded on the dystopian Government autocracy. Stop making it look like a pretentious piece of shit already.
>MGS2 aged well
Pic related is a game that aged so well you can still get games 24/7
Comfiest Civ
Dumb weeb
Get back in your cont/a/inment board.
reactions images don't make me a weeb.
that being said I am a weeb and have seen many anime. I'll be going.
I apologize for coming here and talking positively about a videogame, I know that actually liking games is kind of a taboo on Sup Forums...
fuck off reddit
stop making yourself sound like a faggot. Even if its ironic.
Both of you are fucking scum.
Off the top of my head
San Andreas
Rogue Leader
Resi Evil 4
DKC2
Super Mario World
Yoshi's Island
Ocarina Of Time
Red Alert 2
Chrono Trigger
Doom
I just wish it had more characters from 2
Is third strike the best version of SF3?
this is fucking decadent bait
That fucking Katelyn Brooks?
mass effect 1. it's amazing how much more focused, immersive, interesting, dynamic and fun it is than Andromeda, despite all the supposed innovations of the last few gaming "generations".
...
I'm sure Rollercoaster Tycoon is as fun today as it was 15 years ago. I always thought the graphics were way more comfy than the mediocre 3d of RCT3 too, so it's held up well that way too.
I also enjoy Pharaoh quite a bit and there really hasn't been anything quite like that this decade either as far as I know. Sure there have been city builders, but they always fail to capture the autism tickling gameplay of the Pharaoh games. Pharaoh games always felt like a bit of a puzzle to be figured out rather than a simulation like so many city builder games try to be.
I also think the old Jedi Knight games aged pretty good, even Dark Forces II. Sure they look like ass today, but mixture of guns, lightsaber combat, and force powers are top-tier. It makes me sad to think we'll never get a star wars game like that again.
I actually prefer to play dishonored as an action game, your character gets pretty op at combat once you spec into it, especially in the sequel. I've been meaning to check our their earlier stuff, I too tried the demo back when it came out and for some reason never got the full game.
As much fun as I don't have playing that game, this fits the bill perfectly. It has an odd taste, is definitely meant for older people, but has a younger variant (Brawl, PM, or Sm4sh can be seen as juice), has a community acts like it's drunk, and is constantly getting arguably better with time due to the introduction of newer tech.
Rollercoaster tycoon 3? Yes, but I doubt anyone could enjoy the original except for nostalgia
You owe it to yourself to do it, hell, fucking pirate the game and pick it up later if you can't afford a copy. It's a source game, so it runs like butter with minimal compatibility issues, though it did crash on the occasional load screen, and every time I quit it.
Dishonoured, and stealth games in general hard wire me to play full stealth. Combat is a failstate. It's why I love Dark Messiah so much, stealth is pointless, running a sword is just straight up better 90% of the time.
Bahaha. You're stupid.
Yeah, I used to be a full stealth fag too. But a combination of the Deus Ex franchise dying, and me getting old and cranky made me abandon my ways. Mankind Divided was the last game I completed on pacifist, and never again unless they bring it back.
