Chromatic abberation is best done in extremely small amounts. it can be a nice touch to smooth out otherwise harsh polygon graphics while also adding a touch of camera feel to the image (as opposed to AA which is just smoothing for no express reason.

But if it's overblown, it's going to look, as you said, like a camera malfunction, as opposed to simple light distortion caused by a lense.

If they focus on making games more cinematic with all the negatives that come with cameras/film, they can avoid difficult tasks like good gameplay.

If the player character is human or the game is third-person it's cancer.

Your comparison picture is invalid, this is what the top one would look like without CA. You seem to be under the impression that if there was no chromatic aberration there would be no blur at all, which isn't true. If devs want motion blur or just radial blur they'll add it regardless. If they don't want blur they wouldn't add CA in the first place. It's really that simple.

Our eyes expect a tiny bit of chromatic aberration just by nature of optics, especially when looking at lower resolution data with aliasing. A tiny bit of artificial CA really makes an artificial image look real. Games however typically make the pixel radius way too large, it should really be at the sub-pixel level.

Devs WANT to make the image blurry, they simply chose to also add color separation (CA). If they removed CA they'd use any other method of blurring the image, like a Vignette/Radial blur.
If they don't want to make the image blurry at all they'd simply remove any kind of blur, CA included. You guys are creating this false dichotomy of "Sharp image with no post-processing" VS "The evis of Chromatic Aberration", when the actual comparison is Blur VS Blur+Color Separation.

Not using blur (or post-processing effects) at all is another thing altogether. Normal blur is the alternative to CA (not "no blur"), that's all I'm saying.

Most devs already do on PC. We tend to have the option to turn off CA and blur, opting for better AA options instead more often than not.
