Who is responsible for starting this loot box shit in video games?

Who is responsible for starting this loot box shit in video games?

Is it Blizzard?

...

I thought it was Valve

thread
thread
and fuckin thread

It was me. I did it. I was the faggot all along.

counter strike

this is the gayest post ive seen in a while

TF2 started it. But CS:GO could be blamed for popularizing it.

TF2 and Valve.
Which is essentially copying the "gachapon" that was in the korean/japanese f2p mobile games before then.

The subhuman combat arms

>CS:GO
Knives, man. Those fucking knives. I unboxed an unusual Dota 2 courier like 4 years ago and I STILL have money left on my steam account from it.

ROUND START

How much did you sell it for?

the death of TF2

Blizzard's responsible for atleast making it 10% less jewish compared to valve

about tree fiddy

466 dollars.

Some asian F2P P2W grind-a-thon MMO, I'm sure. They've been doing gambling packs for ages already.

Name 3 games that got loot boxes right.

>Dirty Bomb ("Shiny" cards are just cosmetics)
>Overwatch (literally only cosmetics)
>?

Rainbow 6 Siege

Well it was about this time that I noticed that this user was about 8 stories tall and was a crustacean from the paleozoic era

Forgot to mention neither of them require you to pay anything to open their boxes, unlike Valve.

>Go attend TI7 this year in Seattle
>Special boxes drop for attendees in the arena
>Get like 4 of them

>Sell them all and get 500$

Jesus christ I'm set for a long time.

PUBG

you can make a good profit from free virtual boxes

>Is it Blizzard?
You know, I shouldn't be surprised in the lack of knowledge you guys have on here of video games because Sup Forums doesn't into video games

No, Blizzard didn't start it.

It was Valve you underage newfriend

It was literally started by casual chinese web app games like farmvilled but for chinese people.

valve literally ruined everything

>Overwatch gives you shit cosmetic/skins
>"it's good, I swear!"

to answer your question, Payday 2 does loot crates (just loot crates) pretty good,
>1 free crate per week
>can open for free that week

>Paid game
>Gets microtransactions
>Instead of shitting on valve for doing this the community eated it up and begged for more

We would've had Half-life 3 by now but nooo, you fuckers sold it to a fucking shiny bunch of polygons on your char's head

This is why this industry is a fucking cancer.

>per week

AHAHAHAAAAAAA

You honestly think a purely cosmetic lootbox system where you can get hundreds free, is better than a system where you can get 1 box a week, and you get actual game altering items.

Inb4
>its pve who cares

I don't mean that the stuff you get in the crate, I mean the mechanic of the crates themselves. And OW's is objectively non cancerous. You get them at every level-up, you get them for playing in the arcade, you don't get any kind of stat modification from their items, and you don't have to pay to open them.

wasnt it free 2 play by the time loot crates came out
at the time I laughed at them, and I expected everybody else to do the same
apparently not..

This image triggers me every time.
Holy shit nigga get that shit edged and a fucking haircut. Embarrassment to niggas everywhere.

The patch that introduced them is the same as when it went F2P if memory serves.

Killing floor 2

Because if you don't want it you can recycle it into tokens that can be used to build an actual weapon skin or cosmetic item.

Uber upddate made it F2P.

Remember when they said they'd do this for tf2

Mobile games. Mobile games are where console and PC devs got this idea and found it worked. I used to work for Google Play support. The amount of people that would spend hundreds of dollars on random lootboxes for mobile games is fucking insane. I've seen a person who probably spent a grand a month on one game.

No. Mann-Conomy update was released on september 30th 2010,

TF2 went F2P during the Uber update, which was released at June 23rd, 2011

I'm guessing everyone in here is a millennial since they don't know where the loot crate/box came from. It was invented by the Chinks to circumvent gambling laws then some guys at Valve saw it; and applied it to TF2.

The rest is history.

Blizzard made it shit. With Team Fortress 2 it was one of many methods to obtain an item. In Overwatch it is the ONLY method.

>but you can get the skin you want with coins!
Coins can only be obtained through loot boxes.

It's the dumbest shit to make the progression system fucking RNG of all things. What ever happened to unlocking shit at specified levels? I don't want bullshit fucking crates. That's all you fucking unlock in Overwatch is crates and getting anything worthwhile isn't exciting. It just feels like an accident when something good happens. Same can be said for the game itself.

Fuck I'm mad. I miss Call of Duty's progression system. Can't even go back to it because even they are doing the crate shit too. Fuck Blizzard. Those fags deserve to drown in the cesspool they created with competitive mode. Fuck them.

Anyone under 40 today is considered a millennial, you realise that right?

they're
fucking
skins

You don't get weapons out of them like TF2. They're just fucking skins.

But we have the internet back in our days, we only knew life as it was, through T.V. or through word of mouth.

this is the most heterosexual post i've seen in a while

Millennial doesn't mean "grew up with internet access" it's anyone born from early eighties to late 90s

In TF2 you can get 'skins' by trading, buying them directly, earning them on occasion, or RNG.

In Overwatch its just RNG. If I want to get something specific I can't even buy the fucking currency directly.

I remember people laughing at valve on how people weren't going to pay 2.50 for an item to open another item you get by playing the game so you can get a different item that you can get by playing the game

And here we are

It's never right if you paid for the game. Even cosmetics. Fuck you.

Millennial is someone born on or after the millennium.

Someone from the late 80s to early 90s have a completely different life experience, so different in comparison to someone who was born after the 00s.

You'd know this if you weren't a Millennial, stop pretending to be a "90's kid".

Aren't lootboxes a variant of gachas, themselves a Japanese invention?

Blame Valve all you want but people bought it

A company does what makes them money

>being this young

The koreans did it first.

You are wrong, quit embarrassing yourself.

>I~T~S O~N~L~Y C~O~S~M~E~T~I~C

Faggots like you is the reason why devs are willing to push microtransactions even further into our ass, despite several games already having an initial base price.
They see that the consumer is fine with the >only cosmetic, so they try to take it a step further to test the consumer's patience, slowly ingraining the system into our minds. We've already passed the point of white knight defenders spewing out "devs need the money to stay alive!" bullshit.

Eventually, it reaches a point where we might as well pay $5 for each bullet we fire.

>grinding
that's why GTA:O gets shit on, cause you have to repetitively grind; or buy fake money

>get hundreds free
>it looks like shit
really makes you think

>implying that's a bad thing
play it once a week

Blizzard never made anything new in they life. They stealing others ideas and making money of it.

Just because you tell people that they're wrong, doesn't constitute for a better argument, it just shows that they're incoherent enough to be able to understand.

Shouldn't you be off watching Rick n Morty instead to make yourself feel smarter than you actually give yourself credit for?

t. sociologist

Jesus Christ. When people say millennial they are talking about a 30 year old, not a 16 year old you fucking mong.

On the internet or in real life? I can assure you that we don't. Maybe a few authors, but those studies aren't peer reviewed.

Continue. You understand don't you?

>Millennial is someone born on or after the millennium.

That's completely wrong. Millennial is just another name that was given to generation Y which begins where Generation X ends (early 80s) and ends where Generation Z begins (early 00s). If you were born after y2k you're Gen Z, not a millennial.

Who are you sourcing; what is your source? If you're referring to anything but a wiki link, then kill yourself.

You claim to be a sociologist and you don't know generational groupings. Again, quit embarrassing yourself. Google it yourself mong

Generation groupings based by who, reference your source.

Why don't you show me a source of literally anybody calling people exclusively born after the millennium millennials

The were two authors Strauss and Howe who coined all three of the generation terms back in the 80s and pretty much every source you can find credits them. They released a book in y2k about gen y which was the generation that would be graduating HS around the turn of the millennium and the book called gen Yers millennials and the name stuck.

Just look up "Millennials Rising: The Next Great Generation" It even says in the description: "the generation born after 1982"

>already admitting defeat

You know I've already called out your citation before you've presented it.

l2shitpost

Ah, you're a troll. Well memed
