I think it would be awesome especially if they scaled back pokemon level advantages and made type more important. You would be able to go around the world and challenge any gym you wanted and look for rare pokemon. You would need to visit different areas to find different pokemon types and build your team. Once you get all of the badges you could go to the league for the final battle.

No, difficulty scaling is bullshit
Just design the world so that you naturally progress through low level areas before you find high level areas and the item progression naturally leads you through them in the most natural order
>start in your tiny village in the corner of the map, surrounded by forest full of shitbugs
>forest is bordered by a mid level desert with sandstorms you need goggles to see in, and grassy fields with lower level normal and grass types
>after a couple gyms you get goggles and can explore the desert conveniently when your pokemon are strong enough to handle it

You don't even need to change the battle or encounter system. You can still have tall grass, and random encounters and all that shit. I'm sure there's no way in hell they'd do full animation sets for wild pokemon wandering around and fighting. But I don't care about that stuff anyway.
