Is Nintendo the only company that still gives a shit about compression? One of the most impressive things about BotW is that it's only 13GB. If any other company made it, you can bet the game would have been at least 3x the size.

Blame consoles. Raw video and audio costs nothing on the CPU side of things to decode, whereas any kind of codec, lossy or otherwise, costs valuable cycles the PS4 and XBone cannot afford.

And now that size is not an issue given that all major consoles use Blu-Ray discs, are guaranteed to have an HDD and can force the user to do a first time install, you get NBA games going from 9gb to 40gb in one year.

Reminds of this blogpost from the creators of Crash Bandicoot. Sony wanted devs to use their SDK but they kinda bypassed it and they ended up using all of the available memory and other devs thought they were given a secret SDK by Sony because their game looked even better than Sony's internal team.

AMD have had these features baked into their GPUs for years.
PS4/XBO can decode 1080p H264 in hardware just fine.
PS4 Pro and Xbox One S and X can also do H265 in 4K.

Microsoft had to bit the bullet with the XBone after HD-DVD lost the war. And any publisher that releases physical BDs on consoles wouldn't have issues to do the same on PC.

DVDs are not an option. Even DVD-9 would need like six discs for most current games. Digital seemed like a good idea when games had reasonable sizes. But this? They might as well market the game as a Fios or Google Fiber exclusive.
