The failure of Code Veronica and REmake is what ruined the series, RE4s success is the only reason the series still exists.
The formula was aleady getting stale. Evolve or die.
Yes, it turned RE from survival horror series into a mediocre zombie shooter. Only good RE game after 3 is REmake.
At the time it made perfect sense, felt like the natural evolution of a franchise that had progressively gone more action. Problem was that it was such a flawless knockout that it put the series in a spot where there was nowhere left to go but down.
People love to shit on RE7 but it was quite frankly a much needed reset.
>building up to in previous games
Fuck that, """"building up"""" to an anime showdown with le evul supervillain Umbrella Corporation is what was ruining the series, RE4 dialing it back and taking it back to localized bio outbreaks was a better direction for the series, shame the sequels (until 7) ruined it
>The failure of Code Veronica and REmake is what ruined the series
No, CV left a bad taste for the classic style of the series. REmake just undersold, and if it somehow came out on the PS2, I bet it would've sold much, much better as the PS2 was where all the RE fans were.
RE4 was only successful because of the amount of systems it was put on, and for the fact that it was released late into the life cycle of the GCN and the PS2, and it was the first numbered RE game put on the PS2.
it ruined the old school tank control survival horror RE. It brought forth the less scary, but more fun to play action horror RE.
It's a mixed blessing of a game.
Original REs were never scary, never had a serious plot and always had pointless arcade elements to them. RE4 had nothing to ruin.
RE4 still sold like 1.6 million on Gamecube and was exclusive for quite some time.
This "RE4 was successful because it was ported" holds no water, RE4 beat REmake on the Gamecube alone.
RE4 was exclusive for a few months, not even a year, and it only sold 0.2 million more than REmake, REmake having sold 1.4million on the GCN alone, imagine how it would've done on a console like the PS2 (if the PS2 could've handled it).
So yes, RE4 was successful because it was ported to a shitton of consoles. It came out on the GCN, PS2, Wii, PS3, 360, PS4, Xbox One, two PC releases and a mobile release.
>REmake having sold 1.4million on the GCN alone.
That's the sales of the remasters. Original REmake couldn't even break a million.
Provide your source, I'm looking at VGChartz and they label it as a GCN game with no other consoles lumped in.
But, let me guess. Your source is you underage ass.
No, it is the perfect mix between action and horror
This.
There could be no FINAL SHOWDOWN with the Umbrella Corp, a faceless entity beyond Wesker, who no longer worked for them, and Spencer who was a feeble old man. Going around blowing up UCorp facilities would've just gotten the STARS gang branded as terrorists and hunted by the government and would have been out of character for them. The only way to truly take down Umbrella was to keep everything above board.
RE4's way of handling the fall of Umbrella was completely realistic, if rather anticlimactic.
>There could be no FINAL SHOWDOWN with the Umbrella Corp, a faceless entity beyond Wesker, who no longer worked for them, and Spencer who was a feeble old man.
Except they did do that, in the End of Umbrella scenario of Umbrella Chronicles. Dumbass.
>Going around blowing up UCorp facilities would've just gotten the STARS gang branded as terrorists and hunted by the government and would have been out of character for them
Actually, in End of Umbrella, I believe Chris and Jill team up with some Russians sent in to shut down the last running Umbrella facility. Umbrella were the bad guy by that point, they had enough info on them by that point.
>RE4's way of handling the fall of Umbrella was completely realistic, if rather anticlimactic.
AKA shit and retarded. A corporation that already does illegal shit and sells BOWs gets shut down because of the stock market? They would've lived on in the shadows or some shit.

Capcom themselves have RE4 GC at 1.6 million and REmake at 1.3
GC RE4 is stated to have sold 380,000 in its first month in the US alone, thats almost as many as REmake had sold in the US by that time.
So, REmake on the GCN still sold 1.3 million, only .3 million less than RE4.
So I was right.
Piss off dumbass
No 5 did.
I wasn't even that user, couldn't you tell?
I couldn't because you responded to my last post before the other guy. You're not even a new IP to this thread, so of course I'd assume you're him
Yes but it doesn't matter since Re4 is one of the best horror games of all time.
Wait, you have the same fucking spacing as well. You samefagging dumbass, at least change your IP next time
it killed it because its the best one in the series and never will get topped. IT PEAKED IT PEAKED!
Wouldn't I have to be pretty stupid to if I had said here that REmake didn't break a million on GC then post the exact opposite, I was just jumping the conversation about REmake not being a financial failure because it was, it didn't sell on the GC, not at the rate or amount Capcom wanted, whereas RE4 did sell fast when it came out.
Even though I like old RE more, it's obvious RE4 saved Resident Evil. Old formula was getting boring and kinda repetitve. I think RE4 is one of the most overrated games of all time but Resident Evil would die if it wasn't overrated.
If they mixed old RE puzzles and backtracking with RE4 mechanics, it would be one of the best game ever created though
>Wouldn't I have to be pretty stupid to if I had said here that REmake didn't break a million on GC then post the exact opposite
Well, if the samefagging thing is true, you'd have to be pretty retarded
>get RE4 when it came out on PS2
>get the whole family around to watch and play
>sister has an autistic fit because it doesnt have fixed camera angles
>she cried about it for years
>re5 comes out
>"wtf i love RE now, 5 and 6 are better than the originals"
think the RE fanbase died out DESU
WHERE THE FUCK IS IT CAPCOM??!!
>So yes, RE4 was successful because it was ported to a shitton of consoles.
More like it was on a shitton of platforms specifically because it was successful. They don't port a game to everything and re-release it every couple years if it's under-performing.
The level of delusion with you fagoos is palpable. RE4 was and still is a dearly loved game, and for good reason; it did just about everything right at the time of release, and the fact that they dropped the horror pretense probably helped, considering Resident Evil was never really scary and fans were getting older and catching on to that fact.
>More like it was on a shitton of platforms specifically because it was successful
They had plans to port RE4 to the PS2 before it came out on the GCN. RE4 was ported because it was successful on the GCN, it sold .3 million more, and it was successful on the PS2 because it was the only numbered RE title on it.
>RE4 was and still is a dearly loved game, and for good reason; it did just about everything right at the time of release
Except for the fact that 2/3rds of the game was shit.
>and the fact that they dropped the horror pretense probably helped, considering Resident Evil was never really scary and fans were getting older and catching on to that fact.
Sure, RE was never scary. But, the classic games are still good and better than RE4 and the trash that came with it.
The reason why RE4 was successful was because it was the only numbered titles on the PS2, and became babby's first RE for the most part. Nostalgia drove them to get it again and again and again with all the ports that came out, and the constant shilling caused more sales. If you honestly think it's the best game of all time, let alone the best RE game, you're a nostalgia blind autist or someone trying to play their opinions safely
>not an hero
fix'd
Define "building up to". The core idea peaked around 2 and 3. CV clearly proves that they had exhausted the core mechanics.
So really you just want them to keep making the same game regardless of quality.
I would actually say that RE4 saved a series on life support. Everyone was getting sick of the classic RE style game by Code Veronica and the games just weren't selling anymore.
But now that third person shooters are your average game, RE needs to go back to the original style if they want to keep surviving. RE7 was a step in the right direction but I think too many people were turned off by the PT/Outlast vibe it gave off. (even if the final game was nothing like those two)
