Why do devs keep doing this? Here is a gif of Hollow Knight with blur enabled and disabled (using a mod because you can't disable it in game).
That's one of the more baffling cases of depth of field Ive seen. It doesn't even make any sense.
All of the fucking game is like that, every background is high res and fully drawn, then post processed to a blurry mess.
Oh and by the way in that picture I also used the same mod to disable all post processing including bloom and film grain. The game looks 10 times better and uses less GPU.
I don't want it if it's not the original vision of professional artists. I will never presume I know more than them.

Why put post-processing effects in any sprite-based game?
Would it be harder for a developer to say, go old-school and not make usage of any special effects other than palette ones? Like Geo Storm, maybe.
Raiden II also looks beautiful, but it does have a couple of special effects that are particularly noticeable during the atmospheric re-entry scene.
