Resurrection (the lvl 7 spell) worked on anything as long as you had parts of the body. If you lost the body( say, turned to dust, eaten by barghest, etc) then Wish could do it.

Raise dead (the lvl 5 spell) needed the full and mostly intact body, and to be cast soon-ish after the character died.

Not really. RPG fans are ridiculously vocal and will bicker about minutia. You'll find a portion of the audience to be absolutely apalled about the way BG2 implements 2e rules, even in comparison to BG1. Generally, shitty engine stuff and BW never really knowing how to implement rulesets.

You could also dislike 2 but like 1 because it falls into the DnD trap of making everything ridiculously magical. DBZ syndrome.

Prebuffing the same routine every time and then casting spells in rotation isn't much better. It's not like the magic system is dynamic - just elaborate.

the fun is figuring out what spells to cast, and most people aren't going to know unless they play real DnD or something because the rules are so fucking complicated and obtuse
