When companies realised they could put out an unfinished product, and instead of being forced to send out replacement discs and carts at great expense to themselves, they could just release a patch for download. That's when the death spiral began.
FE Fates will only tell you what really happened when you beat the "final" boss if you buy the Heirs of Fate DLC line, which also happens to tell you that what you did only pissed off the other incarnations of the final boss which then went around destroying everything in the non-DLC routes.
