That effect on the first card is trash though. You can repeatedly attack him dealing damage to the opponent life points. Best case you could put him in defense and waste a monster field slot forever. I felt you literally gave the worst example in terms of how good the card is but also how complex the early YGO game was.

design aside, which should be obvious, Konami used powercreep to monetize the game. whether it changed for better or worse is debatable, but the fact is that right isn't ygo. it's modern ygo.

At least Pokemon is decent. It still resembles what it once was, and it's cheap, and the online version is actually really good. You get free online pack codes when you buy physical packs, which can be traded if you don't want them. Cards can be traded between players as well, so it's easy to make just about any deck you want. All of the staple cards used in most decks are easy to get, only the shiny bling versions demanding higher prices. If you don't want to play the paper version you can just buy pack codes online; you can get like 50 packs for $25. PTCGO is also pretty generous with the free packs and online currency so you don't even have to spend any money at all.

It is literally only in this moment where I finally understand the hate for wall of text effects.

None of the gameplay mechanics of Pokemon have been changed. The only "additions" being EX/GX/etc, which have been around for ages, but they're balanced by giving your opponent two prize cards instead of one for knocking them out, and there are loads of decks that don't even use them at all. It's also way cheaper than any of the other card games that people play. There are usually only one or two cards that maintain high prices, such as Shaymin-EX when it was a staple in every deck, and Tapu Lele-GX currently, but those cards are also FAR cheaper than any of the expensive cards needed in other card games. The expensive full art cards and secret rares are just alternate reprints of dirt cheap cards that only people with shittons of money bother with. You can build just about any deck in Pokemon on a budget, which is something you can't do in any other card game.

The Pokemon Company also doesn't give into the re seller Jews like Wizards so most good cards get reprinted all the time, further decreasing price and upping accessibility. It's not perfect, but it's far and away better than any other card game out right now.

I can never hate Yugioh as long as Mr Skeltal King exists and is still pretty viable
