I played brood war, and most of it is about timing unless your micro is absurdly good, but that isn't based on intelligence

They all have pretty steep learning curves and high skill ceilings. If you want something with an enormous amount of things you can do and screw around with but can jump into relatively easily, I'd honestly say StarCraft 2. There are pretty much modes for every person's tastes.

After this much time on the market, a newer player would probably get their ass handed to them in competitive multiplayer.
I've been having fun with the co-op mode after not really touching the game for years. Each commander gets a limited scope of units and a handful of super powers. It's fun to screw around with it if you're rusty at the game.

Well mostly its that there are so few players in australia I had to skip my placement matches because even last time I played there was nobody else doing them, then I was matched with players who were several ranks ahead of me anyway.
Sometimes I'd see other bronze players but it was like a 50% chance I'll get someone leagues ahead of me, it was just retarded.
