I think Hyrule Warriors got a lot of sales from people who'd never played a musou game before who quickly dropped off. Everyone knows what a Warriors game is after that so people were less interested.

I liked Awakening and while Fates wasn't my cup of tea, I don't mind it being represented a lot since it's the most recent title. However, to ignore so many other popular characters from other games defies conventional logic.

I hear it plays really well though, graphics are ugly no denying that. But I mostly care about the gameplay.

The Fire Emblem universe is closer to the Dynasty Warriors universe in terms of base character set up (mostly attractive human nobles), but the latter contains tons of variety (as of 8:XL) in move pools and personalities while the former does not.

I 100%ed Hyrule Warriors, and I'd never get this for a multitude of reasons. The number one reason being Fire Emblem bores the fuck out of me.
I'd rather have any other nintendo franchise become a musou. Fuck, I'd even play the shit out of an Animal Crossing musou.
I guarantee if they ported Hyrule Warriors Legends to the Switch instead, added no new content, AND released it on the same day... it would still outsell this shit.

Besides that, there's also how Lyn has a moveset clearly cloned from Navarre where she does basically no iaido but dualwields (Navarre has dual-wielding as his thing in extra material as far back as the OVA despite never doing it in-game) which is honestly a pretty big turn off.

In between the spats, the cloned moveset and her awful supports (wow you remind me of FE7 character, remember FE7? mark? do you remember?) they've done a pretty good job sucking all the appeal out of her.

In the cases of Awakening and Fates, it sells more in the west as a whole, but it sells more in Japan as an individual country (I don´t know about Echoes).
