The way the game is being played changed a lot. Nobody plays the whole year around anymore, just to try out major patches or the beginning of an expansion. We are still talking about a more than 10 year old game.
I assume a lot of people also left after wod was so disappointing. I played legion like a single player campaign for two weeks and felt it was worth, so I don't care what the overall numbers are

Fucking FFXI is still alive and probably will continue to live for years and years because what playerbase is left is so dedicated, that it still makes profits. So even if wow "died" and went down below 1 mil subs it would still print money

Anyone that wanted to play the game did that over the last decade, I don't see the urge to be so negative. I'm thankful for the great time I had with the game but many people moved on

Why is it so hard to admit WoW's failure is due to game design issues and Blizzard not listening to its community to bring the game into the right direction?? Just LOOK at the PvP community. They never cared about it, never tried to embrass it into e-sport (it could have even if the game was bad) and now it's 100% dead.

IMO, WoW brought absolutely nothing positive to the MMO genre, not one thing. They brought a lot of convenience features that casualized the entire genre and destroyed a lot of core MMO systems like barter, trade, and socialization.

I don't think the sub number is that important to the people in charge anymore, since they started having the ingame shop for cosmetics and buying character levels that is worth several months of subscriptions. This did not exist in wotlk, you know

no matter what anyone does, all MMOs will be ruined by dataminers shoving everything on wikis, players will know the fastest leveling paths, safest travel paths, and optimal quests/drops immediately.

MMORPG's are dead until you can add the mystery back again. Information is bound to appear on websites, but players should have to glean that information themselves by doing it, not ripping it from the files.

They'll never release another MMO. It's not worth it. MMOs are gigantic projects thaf consume time and resources far beyond any other genre. Why do that of you can make the same cash with a fraction of the effort?

this was the #1 thing i loved about everquest, combined with the sheer amount of time it took to hit max level. it wasn't as bad as gookgrind games, but the fact that all the game info wasn't on a wiki meant the average player took a year of multiple hours of daily play to hit max level on most classes (which required grouping)

some solo classes were even slower because you needed to find an area that wasn't being camped by groups, that you could safely pull and handle alone, preferably without needing to hunt down people for outside buffs, and getting them refreshed when they fade. It makes everything you do feel so much better, the sense of accomplishment is huge. Compare this to WoW where they added some tiny instance around the time I quit (Vault of Archavon?) that takes maybe 20 minutes to do with a boss at the end that dropped purple gear. Don't even get me started on why instances in general are bad, that's an entirely different long argument, but then you add the short length on top of it, and suddenly spawning your special private purple gear loot dimension that takes a single group less than a half hour to do doesn't seem like such a great accomplishment, nor does it make you feel special for having that sweet drop (due to loads of other people having a very easy time at acquiring it)

the thing that hurts the worst is, even if we got another hardcore everquest-tier game, it won't be the same due to data mining (even if I refuse to abuse it, other players certainly will) and the general attitude of MMO players these days being "spoonfeed me" means these games won't get very high populations and die off quickly, if they even get made in the first place.

max level is a stupid concept anyway
leveling is progression, why does it have to stop at a certain point? Isn't that just due to poor level scaling design where being ten levels underleveled against a random pig would wipe your entire party, so the ridiculous exponential scaling has to be capped at a certain point so everyone has a place to do stuff instead having the guy who's a thousand times stronger yet that much rarer than the 5% that are the highest level of the population having content produced for him that nobody else with a life be able to play through? being ten levels higher than someone else should just give you more tools and pure numbers should be balanced so that you could still be swamped by players much lower than you. This also lets you make the world less level gated so you have a place no matter where you are in the world instead of only being able to go into certain zones designated for your level range.

It gets hard for me to get immersed in the world if all I do is sit in a capital city hitting my queue daily dungeon button.
