So what are the best games in this genre, the genre being "loot-based action RPGs"?
I've tried Torchlight 2, which I found to be very boring, and Grim Dawn, which I couldn't really get into, but at least was a step up from TL2.

Diablo 2 = PoE > Grim Dawn = Titan Quest = Sacred 1 > Torch Light 1/2 > literally who cares
Unironically Diablo 1. It might not have the same replay value as the newer skinner box loot treadmill bazaar haggling simulators that have more features and character builds, but it's objectively the superior game in the entire genre.
nier automata
Xanadu Next
Monster Hunter
...
how bout dark souls
That description fits to pretty much 25% of the games released.
Shadow Warrior 2
Titan Quest>Grim Dawn>First act of Diablo 3>Diablo 2>Diablo>The rest
did you mean hack'n'slash?
Path of Exile, obviously.
I don't know, whatever you would call Diablo 2.
divine divinity is more RPG than loot-based action, but it's pretty good
Grim Dawns quests and world are so boring zzzz. If you just want to make builds and grind for loot go for it though. But to grind that shit you have to be Chinese gold farmer tier
>So what are the best games in this genre, the genre being "loot-based action RPGs"?
I love how every fucking retard and his dog has his own "term" for the genre. It's called h&s, mongoloid and this term was established before you were even born, you fucking shitstain.
Diablo 3.
Why not just call them diablo clones, like the game that spawned them?
I though DMC and the Ninety Nine Nights 3 ( you will be sucked) were hack and slash titles.
This is a hack and slash, not whatever you're thinking, faggot.
dark souls
>actual level design
>actual combat
>actual challenge
It's called slasher.
...
Are you literally retarded?
The loot variety isnt there though
How do you really describe loot variety, apart from it being anything in a game that has loot and at least 2 differing items.
Isn't that what DMC/Bayo/etc games are called?
>pick up sword in diablo
>has different stats and can click on enemies to swing
>pick up sword in dark souls
>has different stats and an entirely different moveset
Hey there's a typo in your post let me fix it
> PoE < Grim Dawn
Much better
No, those are "character action games."
If you're a huge fucking faggot, that is.
just go to a casino
I don't like the genre but Titan Quest was one I really enjoyed. Guess the mythological settings, combinable character classes, and hand crafted environments went a long way for me. Also had amazing graphics in its day, probably still holds up for the most part.
yeah why would anyone play an fps either just join the army
>more RPG than loot-based action
Hmm, maybe that'll suit me better then. I get the feeling that a lot of these games seem to be more about testing and perfecting a build rather than experiencing the world and the story and the combat.
Nioh and Destiny 2
>hey guys do I fit in yet
You know what I mean, and what I mean is exactly what I wrote. Dark Souls has nowhere near the loot variety of these games. For every single item in these games there is a pool of suffixes and prefixes of different rankings and in some cases there are unique items, set items, etc. Getting new shit is the main draw. Darl Souls doesn't really have that. You grind a bit to get a base weapon and then you can upgrade it or infuse it for a slight damage modifier. That's it. You'll never get a weapon in Dark Souls that lets you teleport or summon skeletons.
Titles where loot can actually significantly alter your skills & abilities I'd argue.
>Pick up ancient leg wand in Diablo.
>Your magic missile ability now splits into 5 separate hits.
>Get a full set in diablo.
>Half your characters moves are now completely different and much more powerful.
DD is definitely more about exploring the world, and you aren't locked into a single character class either, only thing to be aware of is that there's a lot of ways you can break quests, so quicksave often
>pick up sword in diablo
>has different stats and may work like dogshit in some build and godlike weapon in some other build
>pick up sword in dark souls
>has different stats and no real thought input behind building around it
Reminder that Minecraft is the best of its genre.
Reminder that TES games are the best of their genre.
Nioh is a fucking blast. Fast paced stylish combat with Diablo loot, can't go wrong.
lol
>can't go wrong
Every game can, and will go wrong at some points.
None of those game has items that can change the way you play completely, so nah.
I legitmately loved D3's endgame. Just going through rift after rift blowing the shit out of enemies.
I mostly liked the fact that the stat balance on items was much better than in D2, where some items were broken as fuck and some were absolutely useless, instead now them being mediocore filler or absolutely broken.
This. I actually miss the "helpless" feel to it when you don't really have a toolkit beyond the basics available to you, and have to use what you're given to somehow clean out hordes of enemies lurking around each level.
Path of Exile is by far the best. D2 only supersedes it in regards to world design & overall atmosphere... and arguably loot/item system up to a certain point, after which PoE still has thousands of hours of stuff left to try.
If we're talking purely single player experiences, D2 is still the best. PoE is practically bullshit if you want to achieve anything by just by yourself, unless you are willing to invest retarded amounts of hours per league.
Diablo 3 was fun with my brother. We had fun playing, and I personally loved how it connects Diablo 1 and 2 together.
But playing alone it's kinda meh. I've never even completed a season.
Game mechanics wise only the reaper boss fight was good. I really loved that. Most bosses, even if they had multiple phases, usually just used another version of melee hit, changed the background or something, but the reaper's phases had this very unique feel. It's hard to explain, but I wish most of the game would have been like that.
This so much. Not many games have made me feel like this.
The moments where you go from full control to absolute despair, and in that panic mode you manage to survive at the very last moment when all hope was lost.
Phantasy Star Online.
Playing Path of Exile atm, i like the build variety and i think its the one of the newer action rpgs that hits closest to the atmosphere of D2.
Ive played D3 before aswell and its fun too, but the different playstyles for the classes are very tied to "sets" and the builds are simpler. Also you can make a very safe char that cant really die. In PoE even with a "safe" char you can still die. I stopped playing D3 when all i had left to do in it was farm for "ancient" or "primal" or whatever the fuck the extra good versions of items are called.
Both games are fun.
holy shit I'm having so much fun
d3 is more fun in regards to action-value. feels more like a moba its more dynamic etc.
in terms of the story d1 is GOAT
d2 is GOAT in terms of the whole role playing aspect, which you can't convey with a short action gameplay video. It goes deep into how your character is built and how diverse you can build it.
But i dont expect you to realize this as you are probably an autistic underage little faggot with no imagination.
People with imagination used to play D&D 30 years ago so 20 years ago they got it in digital form as diablo. that is the core appeal of these games.
Honestly Diablo 2 and Path of Exile are the only ones I really like.
Torchlight 2 is boring, Grim Dawn has a huge variety of unappealing options, Diablo 3 is the absolute pinnacle of design for boring games.
>Amazon with bow
You deserve every bit of this hell, user.
...
...
Marvel Heroes is literally Diablo 2 with Marvel characters
I literally did that and it's not really worth it because of all the bullshit you have to do and not enough shooting
Sacred 2. Up there with diablo 2
So sad what they did with the atmosphere and game play of d3 imo.
Why does no one ever mention these games? I thought they were pretty enjoyable.
Titan Quest and if I stretch it a little bit, Dungeon Siege also.
I couldn't get into Sacred 2 but I loved the first one.
Diablo 2
I enjoyed the first one haven't played the sequels
I wanna fug Katarina
>Diablo 2 = PoE
frankly 0/10 all-time-worst type Sup Forums post
Wait people consider randomly generated loot as "variety"? Yeah, totally not painfully fucking repetitive lazy souless shit at all designed to not have to pay a bunch of people to model, balance, and place and then give marketing boners like "borderlands has over 4.5 trillion different guns!" to some intern's excel spreadsheet homework.
>be 1999 or whatever
>Diablo one comes out
>ALL about that shit, go to electronics boutique, get that shit, remember sitting in the walmart parking lot reading the manual while my mom went in and got some shit.
>that hot ass rogue in the manual, was the first time i had seen western art drawn so hot
>get that shit home, install it on my pentium 150 with 64 megs of ram (absolute beast at the time) and 2gb hard drive
I wish I could bring the feeling to you, young Sup Forumsirgins who never got a chance to feel it in its time. The feeling of the very first time I loosed an arrow and it hit a skeleton in diablo 1
>*THWACK*
my fucking mind went wild with how responsive and good the action was
Whatever gramps
makes me think how meaningless all the advancements in technology and the sheer number and variety of video games today is
it's really all about your age, company of other people and environment that makes playing video games an enjoyable experience
here you go faggot
+100 XP
>PoE fags
don't listen to these people, the game has garbage loot, visuals and gameplay.
>inb4 some PoE fag starts explaining how i don't know shit and how complex the game actually is
>The feeling of the very first time I loosed an arrow and it hit a skeleton in diablo 1
It was indeed very good.
Good minor sounds make or break games.
>dark souls
>pick up straight sword
>it either has moveset A or moveset B with minor variations in the animation but almost no benefits to the gameplay
>none of it matters since you'll mostly just roll around to get a hit or two on the boss or just mash the attack button to stun regular enemies
i hate ds fags for thinking their games are complex and hard and i don't even like diablo
Git Gud Scrub
skinner box, genre for lab rat retards
Is inventory management a requirement?
poe player here. the item generator is outdated and needs a complete overhaul. Its so bad it might as well not be in the game.
The devs either dont care or dont see a problem or want it to be like that.
meh... thats rly what it all comes down to.
rat box.
Path of Exile is an online game with a cash shop, so it should be automatically excluded from discussions about good, let alone the best, "left-click-on-monster-to-kill-it"/ARPGs.
It's recommended so much because, like every online game, recruitment of new players is required to keep it going.
Currently, Grim Dawn is pretty good, but its setting may be off-putting to people more inclined towards traditional fantasy.
The key difference is that D1 is a dungeon crawler as opposed to a loot grinder.
shame the controls are dated as fuck compared to d2
The most satisfying to play is Diablo 3, even with all it's flaws its still the best hack n slash.
diablo 2 came out in 1999
diablo 1 came out 1996
>Game is free and ten times better than the competition
>B-BUT THEY MAKE YOU PAY FOR COSMETICS SO IT'S BAD!
the cash shop is only costumes though.
Does this count?
I never really liked that about PoE.
If you don't spend money on cool shit your lvl 90 character will still look like he just swam ashore.
i wish you could still have a moogle handle the chalice
>bowazon
>not even using multishot
you deserve this
all my cosmetics came from league challeneges
i have half-assed harbinger and got the fancy glowy eyes. but the helm i have on doesnt show them well at all
Yeah, it's been called H&S since the 90s, but some retards have tried to redefine the term as if it didn't originate w/ RPGs.
Wolcen has a lot of potential but it's in early access
Why are PoE fanboy so pushy on Sup Forums about their game being better than everyone elses?
>diablo is about the loot
When you have no history, no memories, nothing to get nostalgic over, you either push shit as Godlike or steal. Just like niggers irl claiming they were and created everything. It is a coping mechanism.
