>levels are linear as fuck >almost every chapter makes you do tedious backtracking (chapter 2 is a fucking nightmare) >one whole chapter takes place in a fucking arena >only 2-3 party members are worth using for combat, every one else is just for their special abilities to solve "puzzles" >>entirety of combat is just power smashing with Mario and eating enemies with Yoshi >level ups aren't satisfying because there's only 3 stats you can level up and badges for the most part are useless
All in all TTYD is decent at best and if you disagree you're objectively wrong. Even Paper Mario 64 was better.
I agree, though TTYD had better art, character design and scenery
Cooper Wright
Pretty much true but at least it has charm and fun dialogue.
Cameron Reed
Well, to be honest some of the allegations you bring up are true
But from your description I don't think you're the kind of person that really likes this type of game anyways? It's more for people that enjoy a more story based experience, and that are okay with less gameplay for **good** storytelling.
That being said, the last three points I disagree with >only 2-3 party members are worth using The only really useless combat character is really Goombella, and her fourth move let's you use Mario twice, which means even the devs recognize that
>entirety of combat is just power smash/Yoshi There's plenty of parts of the game you're not gonna get through with just Yoshi, Keyhaul Key in particular. Yoshi is best partner though.
>level ups aren't satisfying/badges are useless Eh, I enjoy the leveling system. But that's way more subjective so I'm not gonna tell you how you feel. As for the badges they are very useful, maybe if you didn't play the game plain jane you'd enjoy it more.
Anyways, like I said half of what you say is true, so it's not like I'm gonna defend the game to eternity. But it will still be a focal point of my childhood, nostalgia will always boost my score. Maybe someone will learn from what TTYD did wrong and build a better story based experience in the same vein.
Hunter Cook
a 9.5/10 vs the first game's 10/10
fantastic, just not quite a masterpiece
Nathan Watson
lemme ask this Since you're a PM64 fan why do you enjoy it more? I was born too late (97) to create an attachment to it.
Is it the heavy amount of extra content? Is it the rematch system? I like the game too just don't love it.
Robert Stewart
Mario RPGfags literally unironcally do not know what they want.
Adam Morales
Pacing has a lot to do with it, I find TTYD starts losing steam as early as the second chapter and definitely by the Glitz Pit. Can't even remember the last time I fully completed the game. PM64 is consistently great the whole way through.
Elijah Flores
I liked the arena chapter.
Ayden Wright
>turn based rpg is linear
woah...
Christopher Murphy
Rawk Hawk has one of the best battle themes.
Jose Allen
Are you seriously talking shit about the Glitz Pit? It was a nice break after two long dungeon levels in a row, one of which is admittedly the game's shittiest level
Wyatt James
I see, chapter 2 is my least favorite part as well I liked the Glitz Pit too, though, even if it was a resource saver.
Pacing, huh? I'm actually working on a TTYD rom hack with 3 artists and another dev by adding stuff that PM64 has, and a few other things.
Removing the backtracking would resolve some of this problem but would shorten the fuck outta the game....
People tend to the like train chapter but from a gameplay standpoint it's pretty weak. It's basically a VN chapter.
Dylan Moore
>someone telling me Gamecube Games are retro >This person may be 10 or more years younger than me OOOF
Hudson Walker
>levels are linear as fuck Linear level design is not a negative trait. It handles it well. >almost every chapter makes you do tedious backtracking (chapter 2 is a fucking nightmare) Yes, backtracking is an issue with the game, but not nearly as close as people make it out to be. >one whole chapter takes place in a fucking arena Yes? A battle royale chapter mixed with mystery makes for a veru cool and memorable chapter. >only 2-3 party members are worth using for combat, every one else is just for their special abilities to solve "puzzles" This depends on player style and what you want out of your partner. I used Yoshi, Bobbery, Goombella, Koops, Mowz >entirety of combat is just power smashing with Mario and eating enemies with Yoshi This game is not applauded for it's difficulty, my friend. It has fun, intuitive, and engaing combat. Whether you want to think so or not, if you mindlessly play without paying attention you will lose damage from attacks and health from enemies. Even if you don't like it, the combat keeps your attention at all time. >level ups aren't satisfying because there's only 3 stats you can level up and badges for the most part are useless This is a subjective complaint, that is actually fucking retarded. Badges are by far the most useful level up, and this was true for the case of PM 64 as well.
I understand youre trying to be contrarian and cool, but most if not all your complaints are completely subjective. So, please stop using the word objectively when you have no clue what it is.
Liam Cox
when are we getting Paper Luigi tho?
Gavin Hall
>I wonder what you could replace it with? Whole new areas.
Jackson Butler
Yeah me too. Maybe I'm autistic.
Nah it was just fine: the music, the mystery and rawk hawk were cool.
Nathan Rodriguez
>a gamecube game is boring once you get past the presentation
you don't say
Bentley Ortiz
>talking shit about Glitz Pitz
I didn’t know v was capable of elder god levels of faggotry
Brandon Thompson
Why do people complain about backtracking so much in this? It literally takes 2 minutes to walk from one end of Boggly Woods to the other end. Or 2 minutes to walk from Creepy Steeple to Twilight Town.
Maybe it's because I play mostly 60+ hour JRPGs but complaining about something that takes 2 minutes and only happens a few times is grasping at straws to complain about.
Julian Martinez
>Removing the backtracking would resolve some of this problem but would shorten the fuck outta the game.... >I wonder what you could replace it with? I don't know about other places in the game but I always felt like Chapter 4 could be fixed up if the Well outside of Creepy Steeple was expanded upon to reach Twilight Town. It could have battles related to buzzy beetles & other underground enemies, utilize Vivian more & etc. The incentive to go that way as opposed to the normal path could be easily putting a tree or something (that Bobbery could possibly blow up or Flurrie could blow away later) in the way of the path. You'd still have to backtrack at least once though to get Vivian.
Jeremiah Torres
TTYD is more inflated by nostalgia than ALttP, and that's saying something. The only explanation is that most of the loser GCN kids suffer from autism.
Mason Collins
The bit before the moon chapter where it makes you backtrack to every fucking stage is just needless padding though.
Alexander Watson
I like that jump!
Grayson Phillips
Says the dude who probably still jerks off to OoT and Mario 64
Kayden Williams
>entirety of combat is just power smashing with Mario and eating enemies with Yoshi You're not even trying to experiment with all the different options you have >level ups aren't satisfying because there's only 3 stats you can level up and badges for the most part are useless BP is the most important stat
0/10, bad bait.
Oliver Morgan
yeah, that sounds like a good idea. Make an underground access to Twilight Town via Creepy Steeple. Fits the theme of the chapter as well.
Adrian King
>someone telling me Gamecube Games are retro
By 2008, Super Metroid was already considered retro by pretty much everybody, and it was 14 years old. We're nearing 2018, and Thousand Year Door will be 14 years old by then. It IS retro, and you're so old and dying of old age that you haven't even realized, old crusty guy. You ready for the nothing after death, old guy?
Ryder Perez
you need to be 18 to post on this website
Christian Miller
NOOOOO I'M NOT READY YOU FUCKS I CAN'T BE OLD I CAN'T BE
Angel Hughes
Not him but even with what you said in mind /vr/ doesn't consider 6th gen consoles (outside of the Dreamcast) as retro so you can't post about them on there, it says so right in the sticky.
Christopher Morgan
>Melee is probably older than half the people who post on Sup Forums Horrifying
Owen Torres
Why is PM64 held so perfectly on here? It's just as guilty of backtracking, and it's even easier than TTYD.
But the PM64 circlejerk will say otherwise.
Easton Diaz
Because unlike TTYD, it doesn't have poopy environments and smarmy "hip to the kids" writing.
Kevin Gonzalez
I dunno, the fanbase for PM64 is larger, it seems.
Maybe because their fanbase got a kick out of finding all that clipping and all the other glitches.
Their game is so broken it's better for speedruns
Parker Lee
I loved it on my first playthrough On replays I got sick of it real quick
Juan Rivera
Eh I replayed Paper Mario last year and found it to have a lot of backtracking.
Sup Forums is just contrarian of this series to an insane degree since Sticker Star.
Justin Myers
>Hating the Glitz Pit >He doesn't use based Bobbery, Vivian, and Ms. Mowz, and Koops (Which already is 5 party members if you include Yoshi)
Carter Reyes
Dude, after Color Splash was announced TTYD was being hailed as the best thing ever so others started hating it to death where as PM64 was mostly left alone & kind of overshadowed by TTYD. Due to that threads nowa days hail PM64 & shit on TTYD whenever they can. I always preferred PM64 myself due to it's art style, more laid back atmosphere & I mostly disagree with what you said about backtracking outside of Flower Fields but it really feels like people just want to be contrarian now. God, I fucking hate how Sticker Star & Color Splash has made good Paper Mario threads such a rarity, games should be criticized but it's always shit flinging now & looking at every negative aspect these games have, there's no balance.
Liam Morgan
NOOO FUCK OFF I'M NOT OLD
Caleb Howard
>Poopy environments Yes, because PM64 didn't have the standard Grass Ice Jungle and Ice levels
Robert Watson
>Dude, after Color Splash was announced TTYD was being hailed as the best thing Think you mean since Super Paper Mario, son.
Colton Gray
Super sure as hell had more praise afterwards but in comparison TTYD was being praised 10x more than ever, it wasn't even exclusive to just this site/board either.
Matthew Myers
I don't think that's true. They want to visit new worlds, meet new characters (including a villain besides Bowser), and have a battle system similar to 64.
Asher Hall
Oh wait, I misread your post, excuse me. What you said holds truth also, but I feel it went overboard when CS was announced.
Carson Walker
>It's just as guilty of backtracking Not really.
Adrian Allen
I'm playing right now and up to moon base, I'm doing retard jump only where I get power for jumps and can jump on whatever I feel like it's fun as hell
Brandon Evans
polite request to delete this thread as paper mario ttyd is a perfect game
Daniel Barnes
>Dude, after Color Splash was announced TTYD was being hailed as the best thing ever Take it from someone who's been on this site since 2012, TTYD and PM64 were loved a ton, with TTYD being in slight favor.
Sometime in early 2015, people turned on TTYD. Which is fine. It's not a perfect game by any means, but it definitely deserves praise as a 9/10 game.
PM64 then gets praised to high hell, and how it does everything better than TTYD except combat, even though its own flaws are worth mentioning as well. I'll leave my reservations for PM64 out of this though, since the respective circlejerks (PM64 and TTYD) are full of shit.
Both games are like a 9/10, but somehow even great games are worth shitposting over.
Evan White
>Remember my first game of PM TTYD >120 HP, 50 FP, Low bp >Be 8 years old >Been trying to defeat her in weeks >Always say to my best friend my memory card is corrupted with the shadow queen and her evilness >One day I merely make it alive and win >All those game overs >All those times re-watching the intro of the fight that you can't skip I cried glory tears.
Years later I noticed how easy BPs are on battles and how dumb I was first time playing, god I didn't had my partners on +1 sunshine and my best partner was Bobbery
Luis Ward
>It's just as guilty of backtracking Is it? I can't really remember an instance where the game forced you to revisit every single area only to force you to go back to the very beginning after wasting all of that time finding fucking nothing.
PM64 is almost a straight line compared to TTYD. Aside from going back to toad town every chapter you really don't have to revisit any area ever if you don't want to.
Carson Lopez
>Even Paper Mario 64 was better.
You're saying that like any of the other Paper Marios are better than those two
Ryder Phillips
Out of curiosity, what do PM fans think of the Mario and Luigi games?
Carter Cooper
Finally someone speaks the truth.
Robert Phillips
I've only ever played super star saga but its one of my favorite games from Nintendo.
Mason Morris
I like them but I would prefer a Paper Mario RPG more within the roots of TTYD when it came to battle systems and party members.
Sebastian Brooks
Great games, just not a replacement for Paper Mario. They're tonally entirely different, it shouldn't matter if their gameplay is similar
Christian Reed
I beat all of them & think they're fun but not on the level of PM64 & TTYD. I find them to be charming, have fun dialogue & I like how there's a bigger focus on dodging enemies but my biggest issues with them is that they lack a variety of action commands outside of the Bros. Attacks & holy shit do I dislike the bigger focus on mini-games (especially the ones that have stylus, mic or gyro in mind), I just do not find them fun. Also this isn't a negative with the games but I prefer my overworld travel in PM more due to it being a 3D space & your partners/abilities make exploration fun. But yeah, they're generally good, just not as good to me.
Jason Gutierrez
This thread makes me think I might be one of the only people who ever use Flurrie. Fuck.
Jose Bell
Flurry is a solid choice for the pit and some boss encounters, such as Cortez and Magnus Von Grapple.
Owen Watson
A lot dislike her due to her design & they don't realize how good Gale Force can be. I prefer using other partners but in recent years I realized how she can be used decently well.
Noah Sullivan
this desu her design turns me off the most I know she's actually decent I just can't get over it bc I'm a raging homosexual
Landon Cooper
>that fight where Doopliss joins the Shadow Sisters >Doopliss transforms into Flurrie >Flurrie needs HP, so I use Lip Lock on Doopliss >Dad walks in
