Why does the first game look so much better than the sequel? I'm not speaking strictly in terms of graphical fidelity, but the directing - aesthetic - grittyness was tenfolds superior in the original Evil Within.
The shadows still look amazing!

When you reload your weapons, it ejects physical bullet casings which can bounce off objects. Great detail!
Because the second game fell for the Open World meme.
The shadow in Evil Within 2. (Max settings).
I'm standing behind a light.
The second game seems like a lower budget game compared to the first game. It's like how Resident Evil Revelations 2 looks worse than RE5.
No bullet casings during reload.
The lantern was aesthetic as fuck.
This was another problem with the sequel. In the sequel you have a flashlight right, which means you cast a more focused directional light source, the problem is the light is emitted from your waist which causes for some awkwardness with pointing the light at where you're aiming. Sometimes it bugs out and doesn't even cast where you're looking.
Because it's extremely linear and small.
EW2 looks much better though?
EW2 has it's moments, but Mikami did a phenomenal job with the atmosphere in the first one which is vastly superior in my opinion.
I'm struggling to finish the first game, it just drags on and on, all the scripted shit is really tiresome.
Should I finish it?
Currently just arrived in the city, chapter 11.
...
Jokes on you: The B-Team made the sequel. Everyone that worked on the original, including Mikami, have been missing from the credits.
New IP?
The shadows are really good.
Finish that chapter then call it quits of you don't like it.
The second might be to your liking...?
It's looks too clean imo.
After chapter 12 it gets good again then right before the final boss shit again. You're at the worst part of the game.
I got to Chapter 14 before I uninstalled, it does not get better. The whole Theodore plot is awful and results in a lot of melodrama. Story should have involved Ruvik using Stefano to worm his way into Mobius' STEM system with the intent of corrupting it for his own purposes. Obscuro and the Guardian are by far better designed than anything else to come after them, save the first splooge monster.
>Hating on the shark.
It was the kinost level.
...
Oh durr, didn't even notice you meant the first game.
City part is one of the worst sections, but you're fairly close to the end at that point. Doesn't really get much better though, sadly.
the first one is worse the fuck you talking about retard
>get teleported back to beacon
>gives you black bars
he
he
he
That's debatable. The first game was about a 6/10, and so is the sequel. They improved on some things and took steps backwards in other ways.
How is that possible? First game was made with the PS3/360 limits of 512MB RAM.
>the first one is worse the fuck you talking about retard
People here are retarded, what did you expect? A lot of people here think that Sly 3 is better than Sly 2 and that Ratchet 2 is better than Ratchet 3. They have selective memory.
What is it called when the shadows bounce off light sources in a realistic manner? FEAR has it as well.
...
It's called "the way light works in real life".
I wouldn't be surprised. With the amount of different horror ideas already thrown into the first TEW they'd probably rather make something new entirely.
volumetric shadow
They're just shitposters
TEW2 is a much larger game with more things going on and with more things pre-loaded.
That said many things look better, like the enemies.
but Mikami is the producer, user
Character model looks great
Yeah I also like some of the new monster designs, but at the same time I dislike the glowing eyes. It makes them less threatening somehow.
You forgetting about the abysmal 2nd half where all that design goes out the window? EW1 has a strong visual start then goes to complete shit as it rushes to a close. EW2 is uneven but at least it isn't all grey-dingy settings after a point. The times the 2nd game looks good it's greater or even with the first game.
...
What's this smoky looking guy over here?
I liked the aesthetic of the Haunted in the first game, with the barbed wire and eerie white light emanating from inside them. The sequel's Lost with their weird warped flesh and generic red eyes are too much like regular zombies to me.
Obscura blows anything else from either game out of the water though, easily the best enemy design to come out of the franchise.
>guy
She's friendly, go give her a hug.
I honestly feel slightly bad about Obscura coming out in TEW2. Ive been working on my novel for around 3 years now and I already changed one design due to Ludwig from the old hunters. Not sure if Obscura is similar enough to warrant a similar procedure
>You forgetting about the abysmal 2nd half
No I agree with you. It takes a real nosedive during the last quarter of the game, and pretty much all of the boss battles are horrendous. But despite all that I still regard is more highly than the sequel.
Also I just noticed the eyes glow on some of the enemies in the first one too, I'm an idiot.
okay
And Miyazaki was too for Dark Souls 2.
It's just a name.
...
I thought that Kidman had a very detailed model would reused but thought they would save it for the DLC.
He's not even a producer, hes a supervisor. Literally zero impact.
Why is he hunched-back in the DLC? Did they just used Sebs animation and said fuck it?
...
RIP
EW1 had a more oppressive atmosphere, the worst parts were the "city" chapters which unironically comprise the majority of the style in EW2. In EW2 I kept hoping for the chapter 10 moment, 'The Craftsman's Tools' -- all those deadly traps, the noise, and getting stuck in the basement with Laura.. That shit was really intense. There's nothing like that in EW2, frankly nothing is ever tense or terrifying... The two psychopath villains feel like caricature psychopaths from Dead Rising whereas Ruvik was truly unsettling and an absolute psychopath. They also went full McVillain with Mobius in EW2, it was cringe.
>Not sure if Obscura is similar enough to warrant a similar procedure
What's it like?
I find myself wishing Obscura had been in a better game. She probably could have worked as a Silent Hill boss. Then again, I wouldn't trust a modern SH to be good either.
Welcome to TEW, it's 7/10 at best same with TEW2. I don't get why it suddenly gets so much praise.
>The second game seems like a lower budget game compared to the first game.
Just like Dishonored 2 and Wolfenstein: TNC. Who could behind this?
You forgot the most important part, no Broseph to high five kill off all the enemies for you.
you mean the design from my novel?
imagine the pic you posted but around the size of a small house, the entire body is a giant rusted boiler, long spindly hands, torn off legs and an ancient camera combined with a "beartrap" for the face with a human face wrapped on top of the camera lens. The whole point was that the camera would be on a metal railing, letting the face extend for meters. Very inspired by pic related combine with Amnion from silent hill homecoming
Just finished it. Literally took me 1 day and 3 hours. It was pretty fun, but I swear Stephano was way more pleasingly aesthetic than whatever that black dude and Myra had to offer.
I don't even remember that black dude's name, that's how forgettable he was. I did like his boss fight though.
I wish there were more parts like the one with the ghost lady. I swear this game took a lot of things from everywhere. From The Last of Us, from Twin Peaks, from the horror movie Mama. From a lot of places.
I enjoyed it, but I don't know. The ending was pretty cringy, but I guess there isn't any horror game without a cringy ending unless they go for a bad ending.
Don't worry, that money is going to better games.
Wrong
Dude, that was awesome.
wolfenstein isnt even out yet
>2 minute stealth segment that's more interesting than pretty much anything else in the game.
i enjoyed the entire game, it does get tiresome but for different reasons in a good way.
Yeah, instead you get some hispanic commando chick with an assault rifle.
She's there for like 10 minutes.
>Obscura blows anything else from either game out of the water though
Jokes on you, not only its not scary - its fucking hilarious. The way that camera thing moved and the sounds it was making was so bad we almost died from laugher while battling it for the first time.
Objectively best design coming through.
I like how Joseph has multiple lines recorded where he asks you if you're alright whenever you your health gets low.
haha
So you're just a fanboy of the first game.
Actual Bethesda shill here:
This is a common practice in the industry to lower the budget cause we already have a solid foundation to work with. TEW budget was around 46 million and this close to 20 million. The reason the game looks flat cause it was develpoed for 2 years, while the original had 4.
Also, this is true :
Where did I imply Obscura was scary?
Is this supposed to be an insult?
...
Got any more hot inside scoops, deep-throat?
Considering the fact that we're talking about horror game value of 'best' automatically suggests the most scary and disturbing shit.
first game looks way better than sequel, it has way more detailed narrow spaces and better enemy design.
$30 DLC happening.
Third game (most likely) happening.
Mikami game for 2020. High chance to be cross gen, Horror game with VR as an option (Not first person). Budget is around the same as his first game.
Boy the story really starts to shit itself HARD in 2 after Stefano. People complain about the first game's lack of story but if you ask me some times less is more. 2 just feels like a clusterfuck at this point and them trying to subtly retcon shit from the first game but it doesn't make any sense.
I liked it. TEW the only part of sebastian you actually got to see was that he was sick of the bullshit thrown at him, with a backstory in the collectibles.
TEW2, while lacking in the "wtf is this place" moments like TEW, had it's moments, and I liked Seb's development and sentimental side
>them trying to subtly retcon shit from the first game
Havent played TEW2 yet, what have these fuckers retconned?
It really goes to shit after Stefano. I hope you get to endure it. Exploring? Gone. Stupid and uninteresting characters? Yes.
Interesting.
When you say Mikami game, do you mean to tell me he'll helm the directing or will his name be attached to it like in Tom Clancy games.
Oh wow so something like how Dishonored 2's dlc became standalone? I was actually right!
The colors, dude, the colors.
Fuck I loved the black bars in the first game. I just loved how the game looked in general. The texture quality is shit but the atmosphere, art, direction... it's great
I got good news for you my dude!
the first
mid-size game are profitable thanks to retailers allowing boxed copies to be sold at that price with no huge taxes.
I feel like between TW2 and TW1 there's a perfect horror game. They just need to take what worked in both of them and make something great.
do we play as Lily in the DLC?
the sequel was compromised by a western director. the first was a clusterfuck but at least it was artistic in some way. this just feels hollow and boring in comparison
Nope, quit and YouTube it. The 2nd game is a lot better
100% dude.
I'm crossing my fingers for the third one to really knock it out of the park.
What's the backstories of the monsters in TEW2? In the first game each monster had a reason for existing or represented something. And you could find them out by looking at their models and descriptions. What is the story behind the singing ghost lady and why does she bring back memories of the first game and also turn people into zombies?
The issue here is that the game wasn't made for black bars so you'll be covering stuff that should be visible.
If only the black bars expanded the FOV as well, that'd work
TEW3?
They don't try to do much to be honest, like they don't destroy it I mean. Part 1 left a severe trauma to Seb, there is a side quest that gets your revolver from the first game back that is about trying to overcome the trauma that being inside Stem left inside you.
Mobius gave Seb a psychologist after the first game and instead of helping him he tried to make him think that nothing happened or something like that.
Mobius is everywhere. They made up the whole daughter dead in the house fire.
I don't remember what else. Oh yeah, something I forgot, fuck. There's these little photos you get, there are 11 in total. You get to chat with Kidman while you see them. There's one about Joseph, Seb blames himself for his death.
Kidman says he's not dead and that they'd talk about that when they get time.
THAT NEVER HAPPENED.
I guess it'll be a DLC? Fuck.
Anyway, basically TEW1 is what makes Seb the broken and unstable character that we play in 2. Nothing else.
Kidman.
