I'm having a fantastic time. Not understanding the complaints, I think Mario RPG fans just unironically don't know what they want at this point.

The only complaints I've actually seen are over the art being different (which is understandable, given that a lot of people prefer the pre-DT outlined style and that a couple of the enemy/npc designs were altered) and the music, which has some questionable instrument choices. The gameplay itself is either unaltered or an improvement in any given aspect.

M&Lfags are indefensible.
They get a game with some of the best spritework ever made, insanely detailed, certainly the best in the last 10 years or so, and all they can do is complain about some minor changes.
I wish Samus Returns got a treatment even remotely comparable to this.
Literally worse than Metroidfags. Fuck you.

Music is doodoo compared to the original, otherwise it's a perfectly fine remake

I'm not buying it because the battle system and enemies are completely unchanged after being spoiled by Dream Team and Paper Jam. It's like playing FRLG with the Gen 1 battle system.

Not disputing the sheer quality of the remake's art, user, but I can definitely see why some people dislike the style it's going for. As much as I like the remake's art, I still personally prefer BIS's artstyle.
They did make a couple changes to update the system to DT/PJ's standards, actually.

It has new Bro Moves and Defense from Paper Jam through.

I've heard some of the remastered tracks and they are abysmal in comparison to the original. Same with the art. They just went for the plain Mushroom Kingdom look for many of the enemies. Other than that I'm sure the game is fine.

>They just went for the plain Mushroom Kingdom look for many of the enemies.
Eh, the only enemies they did that for are anything close to a regular koopa, and that seems to be to keep consistency with the Minions mode. Pretty much everything else stayed the same.

Popple & Rookie vs. Boswer & Antasma and see how much more elaborate the latter is despite happening earlier. Or any of the bosses, really.

user, less going on doesn't make the combat worse, just simpler. I do agree that DT/PJ are more fun in the variety of enemy attacks that you have to deal with, but the remake is still pretty fun.

BOWSER&MIDBUS/POPPLE&ROOKIE GAME WHEN

Why Miyamoto is so strict about Paper Mario and doesn't allow it to have a story but at the same time he seems fine with M&L RPG?
It has been puzzling me for a long time.

It's great. I just have the occasional nitpick. I'll agree that the music upgrades aren't AMAZING and I"m confused why they're using Dark Moon music for E Gadd scenes lol.

But everything else (99% of the game) is great, but I'll admit I'm nostalgic for it.

>implying miyamoto is responsible for PM going to shit
Tanabe is who you need to pin the blame on, user.

Is the game hard or does it go on autopilot?

Because Intelligent Systems are the ones who don't know what they're doing.

The remixed music sounds great in-game, the instrumentation fits perfectly with the slightly less cartoony and more detailed graphics. I can't explain it very well, but the environments were remade to have less flat colors and more gradients, with a completely new lighting system that makes everything look softer and warmer. The instrumentation in the music goes very well with it, think the comfier routes and towns in Pokémon Black and White.

As for the battle system, yeah, it's much less elaborate than the other 3DS games and the game is still a complete cakewalk where the mere prospect of dying once aside from the opening cheap shot from the final boss is laughable, but that's what being completely faithful to the original entails, for better or worse.

Super was just that shit

I think it's harder than the original, but not nearly as hard as Paper Jam.

>tfw we might get a fucking switch M&L game
>it might have full on hand-drawn art instead of the sprites
>it might have bowser in a leading role again if we're lucky
The Switch may just be my favorite console ever made, if only because it's freed so many handheld-only Nintendo properties up to be put on console.

technically the "New" moves are just the advanced version of the old bro moves just that they are separated in the menu instead of you having to know the inputs.

I can't believe how good SSS is compared to DT and PJ. Complete lack of forced tutorials every 5 seconds.

Random additions and changes I've noticed:

There are new pieces of equipment and from what I can tell boss drops are always 100%, you don't need the Game Boy Horror SP for any drop, it just makes the rare ones almost guaranteed.

The hint house in Beanbean Castle Town has become a place where you can receive rewards based on your completion percentage on finding item boxes and bean spots and on how many times you've performed certain feats in battle.

The invisible blocks have a subtle outline running around their border periodically so you can notice them. The item from E. Gadd that gave you a steady grip on the hammer in the defense phase has been removed (since you now always have a steady grip) and replaced with Virtual Boy-shaped goggles that make invisible blocks outright visible when equipped.

There are 13 warp pipes instead of 9.

But Paper Jam allows you to skip tutorials. It was the first game in this series to let you skip tutorials.

I didn't expect some changes in bosses, like Hermie III gets so fucking fast after a few counters.

The game is still easy, yet better balanced.

Paper Jam doesn't have any forced tutorials and this remake removed almost all of them and shoved them into the optional guide just like Paper Jam first did. For instance, you can actually tell the Hammersmith Bros to fuck off when they try to teach you how to use the hammers in battle and they'll leave, although with some resistance, while in the original they wouldn't take no for an answer.

all attacks, bros moves, and enemy attacks are drastically slower

>Trunkle covers his head so you can't hit his weak spot anymore

Knowing M&Lfags, there will be a definitive version ROM hack eventually.
And that's fine.

man, they changed the cakkletta soul background?

wasn't that meant to be INSIDE her?

Would Mario RPGfags want PM64 done in Color Splash's engine for Switch?

The issue is the game just doesn't change enough to make it worthwhile if you still have access to the original and don't care about Bowser's Minions

I'd rather have a new PM that brings back partners

If they make the partners more talkative after joining like they were in TTYD, sounds great

I agree that the hate towards it feels overblown. I think the main issue for a lot of people is that it’s sort of hard to justify the 40$ for those who still own/have already played the original. The most it seems to have going for it are mainly in the visual upgrade. (To be fair though, some People really benefited from that. Bowser especially. He was fucking retarded looking in the original.) And the Bowser’s Minion bit as well, I suppose. Seeing the gameplay for it didn’t really entice me. But eh, that’s just one guy’s worthless opinion in a sea off worthless opinions.

Now take in mind this is from a someone who hasn’t played the remake, but if I were to give one concern that I’ve noticed from the gameplay footage, it’s the seemingly toned down pace of the battles. Bros. Moves were the crux of what made the original game great, they were snappy and satisfying, and personally, they never got old. But seeing them in the new game, they’re still flashy and nice looking, but it feels like they take longer to execute. And having to hear each bro say “let’s a go” before every single bros. attack, I can imagine getting awfully annoying. A small issue, yes. But when it’s involving an aspect of the game which is present throughout, I do worry that it would be something that would grate over time.

But maybe that’s just something only I’d have an issue with in my infinite autism. This is the video I used to compare them if anyone wanted to see if they felt the same way.

100%ing beans and blocks is a real pain in the ass.

I've played the first two major dungeons so far and for the most part, it feels just like the original. So much so that if you still own a copy of SS GBA there's not much of a reason to play this.

Hearing the original voice clips from the GBA version uncompressed by its shit soundchip is surreal

Like Luigi's HIGH

I seem to remember Paper Jam having that Assist thing on all the time.

Nobody mentioned the new overworld controls that for me are THE selling point of this remake.
Finally navigating the areas isn't beyond tedious anymore.

JUMP

There's an option to turn it off.

Is this game any good? I've only ever played Mario RPG and the Paper Marios on the N64 and GCN each for a bit. I never beat any of them though. Is this a good Mario RPG game?

>drastically slower
The only "drastically slower" thing is the start of Bros. moves where they say LET'S-A GO which is one second longer than the original.

if you set the video to 1.25 speed the new bros attacks look right

Yes. Mario & Luigi in general is considered pretty good, but Superstar Saga is held as one of the best in the series.
It plays a lot like Paper Mario ,but instead of blocking, you outright dodge or counter attacks.

Widely considered to be the best Mario & Luigi game and this is its definitive version, so by all means try it out.

Thanks. I heard bad things about the other Mario RPGs available on te 3DS. Definitely going to check this one out, once I get tired of replaying Samus Returns.

>t. Paperfag
most of the m&l fans are not the way you describe.

>I heard bad things about the other Mario RPGs available on te 3DS
The two other Mario & Luigi games are really good, Paper Mario Sticker Star is to be avoided like the plague.

You must have ignored every single M&L thread since this game was announced.

Sticker Star's the only really bad 3DS one, I'd say.
Dream Team's okay and Paper Jam mostly suffers from being bland (though it probably does what Sticker Star tried to do better than Sticker Star itself did).

Not that guy, but I figure most of that was just shitposting, threads after the game came out like this one don't seem to attract many people overblowing silly nitpicks at all. I guess we'll see how threads go in a year or so when M&L6 is announced and this remake has settled.

Dream Team is my favorite, Paper Jam is a mixed bag, great gameplay but bland story and setting and too many minigames.
Sticker Star is cancer.

DT > SSS > BIS > PiT > PJ

>Why Miyamoto is so strict about Paper Mario and doesn't allow it to have a story but at the same time he seems fine with M&L RPG?
He's actually not, I'm pretty sure he tried to give advice to the Dream Team team, but they said nah.

>these fucking casuals cant feel the difference
fucking nu Sup Forums

So should I give Dream Team a go first then? It's way cheaper than Superstar Saga. A quick search has shown that a new copy for like 10 Yurobucks.

DT is full of references to older games so I'd play at least SSS first.

Might as well just emulate 1-3.

GO WEEGEE

Boss changes:

There's more enemies that require counter attacking with the hamer, like the forest shy guys.

Almost every boss now drops unique equipment.

Cackletta's harded in this version. She switches places with her clones and her bat brigade's a lot trickier.

The rock three dude now covers it's weakness once you've hit it once.

This all the way. Wario Land: Shake it!! styled M&L game here we come!

Yeah, but muh Fungitown.

In fact the only advice they ever took from him was controlling Mario with A and Luigi with B.

I feel like Cackletta's soul is harder too, but it might just be because it's been years. Bowletta is still a pushover, though.

During the development of Paper Jam, Miyamoto was the one who came up with using the X button for the trio jump (also used in this remake to jump with both bros at once regardless of the currently selected field action), Alpha Dream initially envisioned a nightmarish-sounding rhythmic tapping of A, B and Y to activate it.

Actually the Dash Socks and I want to say the jumping at the same time with X were his idea.

Why does Europe always get better box art?

I nut

Beat the game. I swear the visual cues on the bros attacks threw me off for the early game. I got used to it, of course.
The hammer counters are more forgiving, since you can't fail them by readying your hammer too early anymore.
The bros advanced hammer moves are no longer infinite, which I guess is for balance, but I miss chaining super long combos of Adv. Chopper Bros.
First strikes with hammers now do damage and inflict speed down, instead of just making enemies dizzy.
Equipment is found in different places, too. No more buying mush badges at the Fungitown store, and Luigi's pants that always let him move first in battle are gone as far as I can tell.
All things considered, I think it's a pretty good remake. Still got 5 bean spots left to find.

It a little too easy to always get 4s on the stat roulette now, I made Mario and Luigi so overpowered I just took out the Piranha Plant on the landing strip on the first turn. They should've nerfed the Great Force, enemies aren't nearly strong enough to make the double damage taken a threat if they get consistently one-shot from the first attack if not the pre-emptive strike.

I think they actually buffed the damage all the hammer counter moves do, to make up for the fact that you don't drop the hammer any more.

>I swear the visual cues on the bros attacks threw me off for the early game. I got used to it, of course.
Same, I felt like a retard at first. A minute of training on the first two Bros Attacks fixed it.
