I'm just getting around to playing this (My first title in the series), and I'm baffled as to how this didn't take off. it's genuinely a straight up better game than Fire Emblem 7. It's less SRPG and more just straight up strategy. The mechanics are better and more fleshed, the soundtrack is fucking fantastic, heck, even the cartoonish cast is more likable and interesting than the likes of Eliwood and Lyn. There's also tons of content. Fuck, you can even play 4 player mutliplayer with a single GBA
How did this series only get a few entries while Fire Emblem is still around spiraling into mediocrity? I haven't played the sequels, do they go to shit fast or something?
advance wars 2 is one of the best games ever made, i wish i could experience it for the first time again. you're in for a ride op
SENSEI AND COLIN BEST COs
PROVE ME WRONG
Justin Morris
It didn't get bogged down in waifushit, so people lost interest.
Also the series peaked with AW2, Dual Strike was a huge step down in terms of difficulty and Days of Ruin was like a game from an entirely different series.
Adam Sanders
No, it's just broken gameplay and waifus sell better
Cooper Scott
DoR was alright.
Brayden Wright
dual strike was ok, but fuck days of ruin. some say it was more balanced, but i thought it was boring and it also killed the series for good.
Luis Harris
what's your favorite unit, Sup Forums? i like the helis
Evan Williams
I agree. It defeats the purpose of balancing the COs if you do it by effectively removing the differences between them.
Also whoever greenlit the idea of the Anti Tank units needs to be raped with a cactus
Angel Evans
>tfw fog of war it's the only thing i dislike about the series.
Jeremiah Martinez
it's a popular/awesome series but they were a little lax on marketing it during the transition to the ds. and though it was appropriate at the time to change the name to battalion wars on the wii, 'advance wars' already had a lot of brand recognition and was moreorless considered to be the name of the series which hurt some of their momentum
Jace Ortiz
Tiny Metal WHEN?
Easton Young
who was your advance wars waifu?
Brody Baker
technically its shit OP. for example >play advanced wars ds >only strategy in the whole game is blitzcreig of mechs, followed by tanks, followed by anti air, followed by bcopter real tough game they made there
Gavin Gray
Would you like Advance Wars to come back, even with Intelligent Systems in their current state?
Andrew Phillips
all i need is one last game with online multiplayer and i can die a happy man. i'd take an advance wars 2 remake, it doesn't have to be an entirely new game. shove in waifushit for all i care, just make the damn game already.
fire emblem is cool and all, but i've always liked aw better.
Angel Taylor
i claim nell she is my waifu
Michael Hill
>picking the stacy
James Baker
Anti tanks weren't even good, more expensive artillery with a weakness to infantry in an infantry heavy game.
Justin Edwards
the death of advance wars made me so desperate that i bought field commander. it just wasn't the same.
Owen Sullivan
Better than the dykes and lolis.
Liam Moore
This genre is monkeypaw'd. Tiny metal looks sluggish and the 3D looks too busy compared to how clean AW was.
Wargroove looks far more promising thanks to Chucklefuck just straight ripping off everything, but you have to deal with Tumblr character design
Cooper Davis
It would be ok if the AI wasn't a cheating fuck.
Nolan Rivera
man, the amount of time i've spent in that damn map editor... i think i'm gonna play it again sometime.
Jaxson Kelly
Battleships
Angel Cox
The AI can't cheat on fog of war maps in Days of Ruin. The AI can and will be ambushed because of this.
It's also nice that there's Fire terrain and Flare units.
Matthew Williams
>Indirect AND direct combat unit >Can fuck up every single unit that dares to stand in its way Those things were broken as shit
Ian Flores
Green Earth's air units were aesthetic as fuck
Easton Watson
>11k unit >Dies to 2-4 1k units
They are just bad artillery.
Michael Perez
Days of Ruin is the best game in the series, the others are broken and easy
Ian Moore
Don't worry guys, there's still Wargroove
Kevin Long
>Chucklefish The good thing is that they will allow people to freely mod the game.
And I'm jealous OP. I love the Advance Wars series, and I wish I could get the joy of playing them for the first time again. Enjoy these games!
Matthew Kelly
Tanks of freedom. Free app and exercise look it up thank me later.
Xavier Torres
grit is the best co
Jackson Ramirez
Anti tank is a wortless piece of shit only rivaled by flare. And even then flare has a very distinct use when your opponent decides to overdo it with Recons, Anti tank is what you roll out when you have a 2:1 lead in properties and think "no, the current game is not challenging enough".
Leo Taylor
Well there's no face petting, or shipping, or breeding, or half-naked lolis. It just has gameplay, and there's no market for that in this day and age.
Ryan Nelson
>about to lose >spam these guys >win every time
Jaxon Green
...
Jose Cox
Anyone up for some mednafen netplay? It's always a blast playing this with Sup Forums.
>How do I play?
1.- Download and extract www.mediafire.com/download/35cct9gh28jc9qa/ 2.- Double click mednafen.bat or just drag and drop "aw2.gba" into "mednafen.exe" 3.- Press Alt + Shift + 1 to setup your controls. (At every unique button prompt, press the key you want to assign it to TWICE so it moves on towards the next button). 4.- To connect to an active server, press T to type /server IP PORT or /connect IP PORT 5.- So we can tell you apart, press T to type /nick YOURNICKNAME 6.- Play the fucking game.
If you join a session with people on it, ask if there's any available open spots. If so, type:
/dupe 1
to share the control. I know this is Sup Forums, but don't be a dick and take control or move other people's units when it's not your turn.
Nicholas Evans
nice cryptolocker friendo
Andrew Carter
I don't know which of these servers are up - gonna check now, but here they are:
>Mednafen Server (USA): Address: mednafen-us.emuparadise.org Port: 4046
>Mednafen Server (Netherlands): Address: mednafen-nl.emuparadise.org Port: 4046
>Some user's dedicated server (Paris, France): Address: omachi.moe
Owen Gonzalez
Should I play AW or KitN
Jason Moore
I remember playing this and hitting a wall not that far in. The AI just seemed to know what I was going to do at all times.
I keep wanting to go back. But the rectal pain still stings.
How do I get gud and enjoy?
Levi Bailey
this is an advance wars thread, what kind of answer do you expect?
Lucas Gray
Search the archive. The link checks out.
Wyatt Bell
>implying omachi is up you haven't even tried this in over a year. why post it at all?
Ayden Bennett
a good one
Jonathan Powell
Yeah, it was kind of foolish to do that. Well, I can verify that the first server works (mednafen USA).
Cameron Cooper
well, i've honestly never heard about kitn and advance wars 2 is one of the best games ever made, so...
Aaron Nguyen
Because the majority of the playerbase doesn't share those opinions of yours.
Cooper Rogers
>wortless piece of shit only rivaled by flare Whoa now, Flares are great when there are clumps of forests, ruins, or properties you don't own.
Jacob Gomez
That's in fog of war, which very few people play. Outside of it flare has very limited use, since it is very quickly surpassed by tank in its only situational niche.
Gavin Flores
>aw1 >hour long mandatory tutorial >finaly start campaign, enemy is literally a Saturday morning cartoon villan.
No, this game is shit.
Isaac Ross
Try DoR if you're not feeling the more colourful style of the older games.
Colton Reyes
Nobody actually wants quality. It is literally not a requirement. You don't even need to go far for examples - Fire Emblem is one, but then there also are people trying to shit on DoR right here in this thread.
Kayden Nelson
Wasn't fog forced on in WFC play? I'm willing to bet your idea of >few people is limited to some fags you play with who are afraid of having to look before leaping.
Brayden Scott
I see you still haven't learned to fear the darkness.
Chase Howard
>Didn't take off
Advance Wars was far more popular than Fire Emblem until Awakening happened.
It also has almost as many games. Advance Wars is the seventh in the series.
Angel Wright
Fog is never fun. It especially doesn't work in DoR because the whole game is centered around knowing where the other CO is. Tabitha in particular breaks everything if you can't keep constant tabs on her position.
Nathan Clark
Play to your CO's strengths and find ways to exploit the enemy COs weaknesses. Learn how to bait the enemy out and into a disadvantageous position before attacking. Know when your enemy is going to be able to use their CO power and try and set yourself up to take the least amount of damage from it.
Ryan Wilson
I believe that AW will return one day. Keep the faith, comrades.
DoR's quality: -objectively best unit roster in the series -interesting rework of the existing CO formula -refined unit controls -individual OST songs sound fantastic
DoR's failings: -unique artstyle replaced with cookie-cutter anime grimdark -only TWO sets of battle sprites, compared to 5 previously, both of which are less animated than previous ones -almost every OST track is just driving metal, variety completely gone -no war room -no hard campaign -story gets bogged down in cliche melodrama and takes up far too much time compared to the goofy one-liners of previous games
Combine the DoR unit roster with the Wars World aesthetic and you'd have a fucking amazing game.
Ryder Adams
>Judging a strategy game by the story
Henry Robinson
>tumblr noses
Jason Jackson
>tfw making custom maps in DoR Anyways, I honestly think people criticizing it's darker setting need to get over it; the change from it's happy yay happy predecessors was nice. Now if they ever put out another AW game with the same setting, then I'd be annoyed.
Daniel Fisher
DoR had hilarious "war room" skits, and there is a designated one-liner character. And then there is also pic related.
Jaxson Campbell
Those are some gross character portraits.
Camden Brown
This one's passable.
Joshua Bennett
>Game will have workshop surpport >Only a matter of time before someone makes a full Advance Wars conversion for the game
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK YES
Hudson Anderson
Bigot
Parker Butler
>DoR had hilarious "war room" skits, and there is a designated one-liner character.
Oh, those were quite funny. Tabitha and the doctor felt like real Advance Wars characters desperately trying to drag everyone else back onto the same page. The real issue was that the story interactions took up about ten times as much playtime as prior games despite being almost entirely trite, predictable dramatics with the depth and nuance of a soap opera.
Michael Parker
if you like that game you should try out this one
Luis Robinson
It probably was quite a bit more popular than Fire Emblem in the west, but in Japan between not being escapism enough and the constant release fuckups since Advance no one there cared
Brandon Morales
I'm in Mednafen Server (USA), if anyone wants to play.
Maybe we can get a 4-player FFA going or 2v2 going?
Benjamin Price
Not like AW2 or AWDS had any less pathetic attempts at drama filling their campaign. Flak was one of the few "real Advance Wars" characters in AW2, and AWDS had most of its humor in Survival.
Jaxson Scott
of course it was more popular than fire emblem for a time, nintendo didn't even make the decision to localize fire emblem until after they saw how popular marth/roy were in SSBM. meanwhile AW languished for years in japan because of 9/11
Jace Reyes
I like it but I'm sad it's medieval style setting desu
Luke Stewart
Took out the nose I don't know if it looks better or worse.
Owen Watson
honestly even when I don't like an artist's choices I prefer their unadultered work to clumsy alterations.
Bentley Torres
In the first game the AI can be baited simply by putting out a sacrificial APC or transport copter, it's dumb and attacks them first at any opportunity
William Miller
The game felt impossible until I read that in some off comment on one of the forums.
Noah Hughes
Not the same game but AW. KitN has some cool concepts but like all the dept heaven games it doesn't execute them as well as I'd hoped.
Camden Wood
>Not like AW2 or AWDS had any less pathetic attempts at drama filling their campaign.
Of course they did! But they lasted about a tenth of the time, making them much less grating.
You're also severely underrating the amount of jokes and/or comedic moments fired off by cast members. Some are more comedic than others, but there's plenty of jokes all around. Even in AWDS, there's a moment where Koal calls Rachel flat-chested.
Parker Sanchez
*Cough* The spinoff was better then the original *Cough*
Samuel Ross
No one interested?
Henry Roberts
How come they don't release these games on virtual console with netplay? You don't even have to resolve real time issues like with some other GBA games that desperately need it.
David Nguyen
Advance wars 2 is shit because snow forest space penalty glitch
t. Olafag
Sebastian Butler
The custom map feature was pure fucking sex, holy shit.
Connor Brooks
Thanks for fixing up our game-making factory, we are using it to make new Advance Wars games for the people of Freehaven. What's that? You want to play too?
Look, we can only produce so much. My people need Advance Wars too. Come back in a few years and if we have some surplus, we can talk business.
You wouldn't forcibly take it from us like those raiders, would you?
Thomas Barnes
>I'm baffled as to how this didn't take off.
What are talking about nigga. AW sold more than FE at the time. And I think people that grew up with a GBA and don't play anymore would still remember AW, it was one of the big games of the system.
Zachary Allen
>and I'm baffled as to how this didn't take off But it did. It was just killed due to ISIS incompetence. >we can't release a new game without implementing waifu systems
Wyatt Thompson
>had a ton of maps I spent dozens of hours trying to perfect and balance for multiplayer >cartridge fucks up, data is lost It hurts.
Eli Cruz
>not immortalizing your maps and giving the whole world a chance to play them on AWBW
Colton Collins
I would have, if I had internet at the time.
Juan Flores
Not better, but still fun as hell.
Samuel Perez
I hate how the black hole guy betrayed his commander in 2 but then some other guy became his boss
Hudson Nguyen
Ah, yes, AWBW.
Wyatt Robinson
the campaign is too short and easy and there is no reason to replay it/no way (i think) but the game was fun.Best strategy campaign since company of heroes
Ayden Sullivan
>no reason to replay it/no way But you can't even unlock all COs after beating it once... Plus the entire reason for its branching paths is to add replayability. And then the game also has advanced campaign.
Carter Thomas
How odd, it seemed fairly linear and how does one unlock the advanced campaign? Maybe i remember it wrong but after beating it once i never got any other options so i guessed it was more mutliplayer focused so i dropped it
Isaac Ortiz
The main "story", if it can be called that, is linear. But there are around 5 unlockable missions depending on whether you fulfill certain criteria, the path you follow sometimes branches and lets you select different missions before returning back on track, and depending on your choices in the campaign you receive different allies in the final mission.
Advanced campaign just sort of shows up in the shop, for just 1 coin IIRC. I won't be surprised if the requirement for it to appear is either to reach a certain point in the campaign or to have a high enough rank, because I know I could buy it before even finishing the normal campaign for the first time.
