IRL whips are typically 2-3 feet long, and made of very thick leather at the base, which gradually narrows as it extends. At the end is a 4-6 inch length of loose leather. They're like short, droopy fishing poles. Trying to swing one around is actually more dangerous to yourself than anyone else, since you're pretty likely to hit yourself in the face and blind yourself. This is a rare case where it would actually be less dangerous to you if it were sown into your shoes like fucking Bayonetta. In addition, trying to time the swing to hit someone else the only place it would matter (the eyes) would be nearly impossible, since only the very tip is actually dangerous at all, and once the swing starts you pretty much have to complete it or you'll just get yourself in the arm. Catching a whip halfway up is like getting smacked with a nerf bat. Also good luck actually killing someone with a whip unless you tie them down so they can't get away, and even then you have to really go to town for a good hour.

TL;DR whips are rarely fatal, they just hurt a lot.

Only cause farmers and poor people had access to them. Spears, swords, and arrows were always far superior to them.

The traditional use is really just a noisemaker. Don't want to damage your own livestock on your way to sell it, after all.

I guess anything can become a weapon if needed. They're not something you'd arm soldiers with, but they could be used as weapons if the situation called for it.

That's because the grim reapear is a cool concept, and the scythe is go to weapon for edgy characters right up there with katars, claws and katanas.
