I wish someone would define comfy. Is it a safe spot in the midst of a virtual environment or a brief respite that offers some scenic views? How much is it related to the perspective (seems third and first person games get posted in equal measure) and/or the genre - because horror and adventure RPGs seem to be prevalent, meaning that the threat needs to be present to emphasize the sanctuary element.

I'd say it's just a lazy word for an atmospheric element.

The general consensus seems to be anything that is aesthetically soothing and/or easy to play, which work together to give the player that sense of comfort.

To me, comfy is easy to play/not a stressful game first and foremost, followed by atmosphere. It's largely subjective, but can also be largely agreed upon at the same time.

Comfy is a very specific category of atmosphere that causes a physical response almost like nostalgia or something, relaxing or soothing.
Taking shelter from something like a storm, monster, demon, nuclear blast, etc. is its own type of comfy derived from a bit of juxtapositioning and relief that it's out there and you're in here where it's warm and safe.
