Overwatch does it in a slightly different manner, in which if you buy lootboxes you will get matched with people who are good at the game. And on the other end, if you are good at the game but don't buy lootboxes, you will get paired with less skilled people who do buy lootboxes (in order for you to carry them).

I defend Activision and every single DRM solution as well as the most severe monetization practices, because I want pirates out of my hobby. When games become unplayable unless you splurge 60 additional bux on unpiratable DLC and cash shop items on top of the base the game, only then will I be satisfied, as only then will subhuman poorcuck piratefags will be truly driven out of my hobby, since DRM doesn't work.

When I was testing Hearthstone, I tested the matchmaking system until the ladder [...] paired me with a player who had tons of legendary cards. I still beat said player, but that wasn't the point. [...] it sounded this far along in game dev evolution, that Blizzard still did not know how to make a passable fair matchmaker.

But based on this patent, their matchmaker is intentionally broken. It was pairing me up with the more card endowed player with the hope that I would be one of those small % of players that would react by saying "oh that's not fair, I need to spend more money to get even!" It's a very small number of players, but I strongly suspect the % chance of this happening is inversely correlated with age. In other words, a 10 year old with no concept of money might be much more likely than a 30 year old to decide they needed to buy a bunch of card packs to improve their chances. This would line up well with the secret EEDAR report from late 2013 (they never published it for reasons that should be obvious) that showed that as many as 50% of "whales" were children.

I then concluded [...] that Blizzard would then sell "fair" matches with randomized decks for those players that didn't want to be abused by their "matchmaker".
