See, solid snake had injured venom (thinking him to be big boss) in mg1. Everyone thought he was dead, so venom just hung out till liquid ocelot killed solid snake in the mgs2 intro area. Then venom assumed solids identity. Slept with his gay loverr otocon too.
That's why "snake" looks so old in mgs4. It wasn't foxdie or nanomachines. He was just actually old as shit and needing to explain why to keep his cover.

Kojima stated that he cut out that escape sequence 'cause it was boring, but I think he showed it as a flashback later on on purpose. It can't be a coincidence that Pliskin adresses the fact that the simulated event might not be 100% accurate to the real thing while that cutscene plays.
