Why are there no MMOs with pure-skill combat?
I would love it if there was an MMO like Ring Runner, where a skilled player wouldn't even need to be using their own account to fight 1v10.

probably partially because MMOs are mainly about a big world of people interacting with each other, and to make people play in that world a lot you have to do a lot of generally menial tasks (because it's easier to implement than unique hard shit), and you're incentivized to do those tasks by being rewarded with a more powerful character, so the game becomes about gear instead of just skill

Severs can't handle that many players doing action based combat. WoW target combat is far FAR less stress on the server, since it does not need to calculate hit boxes (just measures distance), physics, projectiles, etc. etc.

Having those would heavily overload the server.

Might work in an instanced MMO like Destiny, but Sup Forums does not consider those games to be MMOs.

Players are more tech savvy now so games require increased levels or security to keep the players from cheating their asses off otherwise the game quickly turns to shit. Not only that but they pretty much log every single thing you do at any given time.

No NPCs certainly helped. No need for the server to handle their AI, regardless of how basic it is (like WoW)
Also, internet networks have barely improved that much since 1995.

1995 FPS rarely had to deal with more than 16 players. And outside of movement, Quake's server had to track only a microscopic amount of data associated with each player - health, armor, ammo, and weapon and powerup flags.

The server wouldn't need to pay attention to ammo, health, and armor if those were only visible to the player.

Quake 2, that was released in 1997, could handle 64 players.

but can't you have like server clusters or something, obviously you can afford bigger servers because you've got many more people paying for each one
it doesn't feel like you would have to do that much cross-referencing to other entities either, even if 1000 people are in the world only a hundred is in each zone, and many of those are vastly out of range of each other still

The internet of the users is relevant as well.
Look at fucking Dark Souls. That has action based combat as in online, and it's also infamous for lag bullshit deciding many encounters, and that's generally only 2 players.
If the combat requires skill, it requires precision, and MMOs are not good at precision.

What about Monster Hunter? There's slight desync with the main monsters, so a hammer hitting the head only registers if the host sees the hammer hitting the head, but otherwise they're synced pretty well. Unless you get somebody with REALLY bad internet though. And small monsters are completely client-side.

Okay, so let's imagine a largely hitscan shooter with Call of Pripyat / DayZ sized maps (plus a few instanced maps to every big level) but with story and quests.
Would that still be too much?

There have been attempts,for all its faults Wildstar did have more interesting combat than most mmos, I once nearly solo killed a world boss that was like 15 levels higher than me,to this day it's the most fun i've ever had with an mmo, but the game's technical issues and general grindiness made me lose patience.

Chronicles of elyria might be cool, but it's early as fuck in dev and the current combat looks pretty meh. Hopefully it improves but i'm not holding my breath.
