28yo gamefag here who somehow missed out on the zelda train despite owning the n64.
Recently bought OoT on the 3ds under the advice of some of you on this board and oh my god what a game.
I haven't played a game so original in a long time and every time i clear another area i get that buzz i used to get when games were more about completion than living another life in an open world.

Can anyone recommend me what games in the series i should play next?
I only own a PC and a 3ds unfortunately

Any help appreciated, also, general Zelda thread

Majora's Mask is the direct sequel, so go for that.
Depending on your 3DS, you may be able to play ALttP on that.

Phantom Hourglass is the sequel to Wind Waker, but is a DS game so that's a viable option. Four Swords Anniversary Edition should also be free on the 3DS shop.

Awesome, i will look into those titles.
My 3ds is the XL not sure if that blocks me out of any particular games
Also, is BTOW good enough to get a switch for (eventually), based on my enjoyment from OoT

Play Majora's Mask. You can emulate all the older games with ease anyway. As the other user said, LttP is a good choice after that. Don't play Phantom Hourglass unless you're determinted to play every Zelda and put it near the back of your list.

You did well missing it son. Zelda is the worst protagonist ever.

Haven't got a Switch myself yet, so I couldn't say.

Yeah, it just popped into my head that PH was on the DS so maybe I should mention it.

BotW is very different from OoT, and not in a good way, in my opinion.

Also to add to the other anons comment, if you like ALttP, Minish Cap is also definintely playing.

My favorite genre is the adventure puzzle platformer. You're not going to get much outside of Zelda. Soul Reaver is probably as good as mainstream titles ever got to replicating what OoT got right. Classic Tomb Raider can give you a similar feel if you can get past the fucking bollocks tank controls. NuRaider (Rise, not 2013) is there with some okay puzzling if you get desperate. Also as others have stated Majora's Mask, Wind Waker, and A Link to the Past will probably work for you.

If the more general "big sometimes comfy world to explore and eventually dominate" descriptor is what works for you then you're in luck, pretty much every other game made now is a third person action/adventure title. Try BotW, Skyrim, FF15, Uncharted, NuRaider, Horizon, probably the upcoming God of War. The list goes on and on.

>Can anyone recommend me what games in the series i should play next?
Majora's Mask, Wind Waker and A Link to the Past.

BotW is really fun, but also a major departure from the mainline Zelda games. It depends if you enjoy open world games and games that are more about exploration and taking everything at your own pace

Emulate Wind Waker and Twilight Princess after you finish Majora's Mask

PLAY MAJORA
PLAY MAJORA
PLAY MAJORA

protip - getting every fairy in every dungeon can seem tedious but the only one I would consider absolutely necessary is snowhead because it doubles your magic meter and magic is used more in majora in almost any other zelda

Snowhead's probably the worst just because you need the Lens of Truth.
>That one hidden in the roof in a bubble

I do like the whole open world thing but very few games execute it well IMO.

Having said that i've heard BTOW does open world very well, now that a more titles i'm interesed in are confirmed for switch i will inevitably get one eventually

This will be the next one i play after i finish OoT, it seems to be the main recommendation for the second title

Like others have said MM is the direct sequel using the same engine as OoT but it mixes things up nicely. If you want to play something more similar to OoT but in 2D then play the best game in the series first though: A Link to the Past.

Anyway, you can't do wrong with any of the 3DS games. The MM port is great (even if some prefer the N64 original; personally I prefer the 3DS version), A Link Between Worlds is a great direct sequel to A Link to the Past (so I'd recommend playing ALttP first). Even Tri Force Heroes is a blast if online is still alive or if you can find someone on in real life or on Sup Forums or wherever for co-op.

Play Majora's Mask. Everything else in the series is going to be a slight disappointment.

>Everything else in the series is going to be a slight disappointment

Pure projection on your part, mate.

Play either A Link to the Past or Majora's Mask next.
Then play Link's Awakening, Twilight Princess, and Breath of the Wild. If you find yourself with extra time, play Wind Waker and Skyward Sword I guess.
I know you don't have all the systems to play those, but just listing them anyway.

i haven't played it but no it's not
play wind waker on dolphin

Majora's Mask is very different and a lot of people didn't like it, but I really liked it.

If you like 2D games, most of the GB/GBA games were fun: Link's Awakening, Oracle of Ages, Oracle of Seasons, Minish Cap.

I think it's different in a decent way. All the 3D games just felt like sequels to Ocarina of Time, which is of course not a bad thing, but it got old after a while. I actually put Breath of the Wild as third best Zelda game just for being good and different.
That being said, it would be even better if it had the more open angle, but still retained more classic Zelda traits, like having a lot of dungeons, iconic items like the hookshot, diving underwater, etc.
It seems like it's going through the same thing GTA did. They needed to get set up with the new game on the new engine and show the new things it can do before re-introducing features that used to be present. Like how you can dive underwater in San Andreas, can't dive underwater in 4, and can dive underwater in 5 again. The next Zelda could be even better for this reason, and it might come sooner than later since they had a huge team last time and the game was a success.
