Why? Because you can only engage turkeys and rats. Anything else is either skull level or armed with a deadly ranged weapon, which you don´t have.
C´mon, try and go to the Clerics territory. I dare you. This is NOT fallout, bitch.

it gets less clunky once you realise it plays a bit like dark souls in terms of baiting enemies so they can attack and you dodge in time to counter attack and own them.

Then there's this witcher 1 thing where if you time attacks right you can combo the critters. It gets actually really enjoyable once you get in the groove of things.

How is this game? I enjoyed Risen games to an extent but I really don't like the whole "sci-fi meets medieval fantasy" concept, so if it's about as good as Risen or somewhat worse, I'd rather just skip it.

You had to have played Gothic 1 and 2 to know what´s this shit´s all about.
A warning: savescumming is not a suggestion, is actually ENFORCED in the game (there´s THREE autosave files who rewrites constantly every three minutes), plus your own saves.
Take a guess on what happens just by this bit of information.

Game over screen every minute.

Imagine Fallout. Now, surround the area with end game enemies protecting the roads (deathclaw mothers and up, supermutant lords with rocket launchers) and just SOME low-level enemies you can take on. Level-lock ALL weapons, even the melee ones, except for a stick and a rag which you start with.
Any enemy gives less than 1 XP point, and you have to roll into a mess of factions and dialogue options that can get you killed if you anger ANYONE.
That pretty much sums it up.

Can't quite decide to pull the trigger on this. I haven't played any PB games but I have a deep love and patience for Janky games. How does this hold up compared to Spiders games?

Follow the missions straight to the objectives, and don´t stray from the path. Those ruins with chests and shinnings? FORGET IT. Even if you find better gear, it all needs 35 level-ups to be usable.

Never. You´re armed with a stick and protected by a rag from around 50% of the scenario. Anything can instakill you, so don´t get smart.
I´m trying to join the clerics, but you have to trek over hell to reach there. Even with the Jetpack this game is a fucking shore.

Clerics are pretty much technomancers with assloads of high-tech stuff, not only guns but psi.
Berserkers are your G1/2 experience mixed with magic.
Dunno about the third one.
