I liked her character. Valve didn't try to take the lazy approach to a black female, and actually went to the South and saw that not all Afro-Americans act as they do in Hollywood movies. It was refreshing to have to Afro-American characters that weren't sterotypes

Her background is that she's a reporter or a producer for a TV news program but there's only one or two lines that reflect this. She's just sort of bland except when she's dorky like saying "axe me a question" or you use the Laugh or Taunt voice commands.

They are usually female replacements for her from other games. Resident evil is pretty popular.

Honestly it's not an even split of characterization in the L4D2 cast for more than just Rochelle, but she got the short end of the stick because her backstory of basically being a wannabe Frank West is never brought up and she has less to fall back on than the rest of the cast.

I suspect part of this is this exact issue. It's fine to make le funny redneck man and the sleazy white gambler, hell it's even funny to have a character like Coach and people will find it endearing. I think they were so scared of making her the stereotypical black woman that they just were like "she's just a normal woman that happens to be black!" in a game with characters who are all to an extent silly caricatures.

just replayed l4d2 in single-player mode. I didn't give the game much of a chance because I was a huge fangay for the first one and thought the second one was a too-fast cash grab like everyone else. I now think l4d2 is a solid game, Valve just should've spent an extra year putting minimal resources on polishing it further (i.e. making Rochelle have an actual personality), and then released it the next year. the final game is great and the work they did to bring the l4d1 stuff into l4d2 is good, but valve had to fuck it up and kill any goodwill the franchise had for good.

Rochelle is an average chick who wanted to be a proper news reporter but ended up being the coffee fetcher for the important people. She ended up in Savannah because she had to be with the reporters who are reporting on the green Flu (the zombie virus). She just happens to be immune along with 3 other unlucky basterds they end up missing the evacuation choppers. She ends up being the big sister of the group, just trying to make sure everyone keeps working together. She's just average. Not a man with history like Coach or Nick or a young funny guy like Ellis, she might be a bit boring but she fits in the group and has good interactions with the rest of the group.
