Why hasn't there been an open world game that takes place in 1970s NYC?

The setting and atmosphere are perfect for a sandbox game

Why would you want a open world horror game?

>open world
Useless money milking approach. No game gets it correct without having tens of millions getting sunked in.

>game that takes place in 1970s NYC
Now that's a more legitimate concern. I think The Warriors is a good candidate, based on the movie it showcases late 70s gang activity.

GTA3 is close enough

The Warriors wasn't open world though. I think they should release another Warriors game but make it in sandbox style where you roam the city fighting gangs

That game takes place when NYC was starting to gentrify

It's crazy how New York City looks now.

Fucking hipsters are kicking black people out and making it look better.

I'd love a sandbox Warriors game where can you manage your own gang and see more of the lesser known gangs.

Fuck the warriors we need a taxi driver game

Why was it so shitty during the 70s?
I've seen lots of movies of new york being presented as a cover of streets of rage or Double Dragon?

Why was it so shit and how did it get fixed so fast?

Death Wish in video games form would be nice. Cleansing thieving niggers, drug dealers and other scum from the face of the earth old man style is pure video game material.

...

There was a really bad recession in the early 70s and at the time NYC was a working class city. Also there was a shitton of corruption which led to it becoming Detroit 2.0 for almost three decades.
Then Mayor Guliani came and kicked all the homeless and gangbangers out and now the city is Disneyworld 2.0

nothing wrong with some tags

the type of camera lenses used made it look shitty
part of the reason russia looks shitty today, they use camera lenses that make it look like that

I find it impressive that all of the gangs in the Warrior video game were taken from the original novel, production notes, and official backstories. Only one gang, The Destroyers, was made up for the game.

>Useless money milking approach. No game gets it correct without having tens of millions getting sunked in.
yeah all those old roleplaying games with their massive budgets

...

I love these vintage photos

What is Driver Parrallel Lines

So 1970 new york was better than my 2017 (european) city?

youtube.com/watch?v=Bc3ZJ_VZz6k

a bad game, faggot

Yes, thank goodness for 1st and 2nd amendment

Actually there's quite a lot of wrong. Messy environments program people to not clean up after themselves or to shit it up similarly. Basically not only people need to be kept in check but laos the ihabited physical environment.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broken_windows_theory
>The theory states that maintaining and monitoring urban environments to prevent small crimes such as vandalism, public drinking, and turnstile-jumping helps to create an atmosphere of order and lawfulness, thereby preventing more serious crimes from happening.
>In 1985, the New York City Transit Authority hired George L. Kelling, the author of Broken Windows, as a consultant. Kelling was later hired as a consultant to the Boston and the Los Angeles police departments.
>One of Kelling's adherents, David L. Gunn implemented policies and procedures based on the Broken Windows
>In particular, Bratton directed the police to more strictly enforce laws against subway fare evasion, public drinking, public urination, and graffiti.
>According to a 2001 study of crime trends in New York City by Kelling and William Sousa, rates of both petty and serious crime fell significantly after the aforementioned policies were implemented. Furthermore, crime continued to decline for the following ten years. Such declines suggested that policies based on the Broken Windows Theory were effective

There are more examples in the article.

GTA 4 basically feels like 1970s New York, with the irish/italian mobsters and everything

Honestly, take away the internet cafes and it basically IS 1970s New York. The game did a poor job of capturing 2008 New York

Still too many blacks and Hispanics.

it had better driving physics and shooting than GTA SA/VC/III

I hope that one day GTA will do a 70s NYC setting.
It's one of the only ways I'd get hyped over a return to Liberty.

>too many blacks and Hispanics
how?
As a non american I always thought that NY was expensive as hell to live in

Mafia II is probably the closest.

>The game did a poor job of capturing 2008 New York
How so? Do you live in New York?
I thought it nailed that late 00s feel.

Man, I fucking dig that aesthetic so much.

hope if they ever do it we get a blaxploitation style protag like shaft

bellbottoms did nothing wrong

well 2008 new york didnt really have russian or irish gangs....it was also a lot more technologically savy than what was presented

There's garbage and weeds everywhere, the buildings look delapidated, one of them even shows signs of a fire. It's not because of the lenses.

Not in todays market and especially not for a third person action game. Those CRPGs you are talking about had mostly pregenerated content, like quests, environments, character names items placements and many other things. But player could invest his time in venues where repeating environments didn't get in the way. Nowadays more time is spent crafting unique hand built scenarios, which increase development time and costs.

so you're redefining the term to mean games you don't like

>and how did it get fixed so fast?
I've heard it was because of racial profiling.
The police suddenly got a lot more efficient once they dropped the equality pretense and started targeting the demographics the majority of crime came from.
Supposedly.
Any New Yorkers care to pipe in on this subject?

70s new york city seemed comfy
youtube.com/watch?v=Bx4aK-YsPeU

That would be interesting.
We could use another decent black protag after Franklin was so underwhelming and sidelined.

Are you actually claiming that NYPD in the 70's and earlier treated everyone more equally than today?

jesus

a combination of things really
>Working class city
>working class starts moving out due to seregation being lifted
>city loses money due to so many moving out
>business closing, job oppertunities drop, causing even more to move out
>corruption within the government and police force
>Garbagemen strike wich multiplied the amount of garbage 10 fold wich made even more people move
>city is bankrupt
>US government refuses to bail it out

It's all about the textures.

Guliani imposed stop and frisk along with the broken window policy. Homicides then significantly decreased and businesses started coming back due to the tech boom.

...

No, I'm just parroting what I've heard tidbits of.
Every time a discussion of New York's declined crime rates, Giuliani, and his successors popped up there seemed to be some controversy.

You had mayors like Guiliana essentially tell the cops to do their job and gave them the tools and means of doing so.

Now you have DeBlasio turning everything back to the 70's and having it become a crime infested shithole again. He thinks that attacking the cops will win him votes. So now cops won't go out of their way to stop crime.

>I'm going to take a picture of this street, where's my trash-and-fire-damage-adding lens?

DRIVER: Parallel Lines

>FORD TO CITY: DROP DEAD
>Vows He'll Veto Any Bail-Out

Look what happened when Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel ended the stop and frisk program for the CPD

Perhaps DeBlasio's master plan is to establish a good setting for future GTAs.

>"I decided to shoot as many as I could as quickly as I could"

>In the early afternoon of Saturday, December 22, 1984, four African American men from the Bronx boarded a downtown 2 train (Broadway–Seventh Avenue express) carrying screwdrivers, apparently on a mission to steal money from video arcade machines in Manhattan
>At the 14th Street station, Goetz entered the car through the rearmost door, crossed the aisle and took a seat on the long bench across from the door.
> According to Goetz, the four men gave signals to each other, and shortly thereafter Canty and Allen rose from their seats and moved over to the left of Goetz, blocking Goetz off from the other passengers in the car. By Goetz's account, Canty then said, "Give me five dollars."

>Goetz responded by standing up, pulling out his handgun, and firing four shots in rapid succession. The first shot hit Canty in the chest; the second struck Allen in the back; the third went through Ramseur's arm and into his left side; the fourth was fired at Cabey, who apparently was then standing in the corner of the car, but missed, deflecting instead off of a wall of the conductor's cab. After Goetz briefly surveyed the train scene around him, he fired another shot at Cabey, who then was sitting on the end bench of the car. The bullet entered the rear of Cabey's side and severed his spinal cord

>According to his statements to police, Goetz checked the first two men to make sure that they had been "taken care of," then, seeing that the fourth man was now sitting down and seemed unhurt, said, "You seem to be all right, here's another," and fired at him again

The women of those times were hot as fuck desu

...

Ouch!
Why the fuck hasn't there been a GTA set in Chicago yet? They could have an entire San Andreas sized multi-state area and include Detroit too.

...

...

CAN YOU DIG IT

Young women tend to look good no matter what.

Except crime rates declined equally across the country, regardless of whether stop and frisk had been imposed in a jurisdiction. Correlation does not equal causation.

What most likely happened was reversion to the mean, the idea being that any given point in time there is an average amount of crime that's just going to happen. The 70-80's where a period of above average crime for whatever reason.

Further more stop and frisk had a negative impact on police-community relations and was illegal because it was implemented as a quota system which caused police officers to make arrests and issue citations without probable cause.

70s was objectively the worst possible decade of the 20th century, with awful fashion, rubbish music and overall shitty climate - Americana of the 50s was dead, revolution of the 60s has wilted and dried up and the glorious neon 80s were yet to be born. What was left were shaggy carpets, wide trousers and disco, alongside rampant crime, dead values and lack of idea for the future.

Let such lack of taste never be witnessed ever again.

Devs these days wouldn't touch this shit with a 100 ft shit pole. Maybe Dice Sweden can make a version where black female cops beat the shit out of homeless people for fun, sounds diverse.

>dead values
What would some faggot NEET on Sup Forums know about values?

It's the clothes that are the icing on the cake for me. Young bodies are fine regardless.

there was a brief period of a few years in the early 70's where the 60's had ended but disco hadn't come into fashion yet and it was still pretty good for awhile. Not as good as the 60's but not full shit yet.

Prove me wrong, faggot

NYC is still only 30% white.

>Muh statistics

You realize that there are factors that influence the higher crime rate, right? Like the fact that NYC was basically broke in the '70s, unable to hire officers and enforce any kind of semblance of order, gave criminals the sense that they wouldn't be punished for any misdeeds, which was basically true.

The idea that crime rates rise and fall independent of other factors is retarded.

>What most likely happened was reversion to the mean, the idea being that any given point in time there is an average amount of crime that's just going to happen. The 70-80's where a period of above average crime for whatever reason.

Closest is Mafia 3 and Driver 76

Because niggers roamed the streets to cause terror, no one wants to make a game about killing them. It would be too real

look up broken window theory
